Expert Review: Kedron Valley Inn

Kedron Valley Inn, a Michelin Key Selected property in Woodstock, United States, offers a charming and tranquil retreat with a blend of historic character and subtle modern updates.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Kedron Valley Inn is overwhelmingly positive, often described as "wonderful," "just perfect," and "exceptional" by guests. On Expedia, 198 out of 330 reviews rate it as "Excellent" (10/10), with another 96 rating it as "Good" (8/10). This high satisfaction often stems from its picturesque location, attentive staff, and well-maintained property.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently praise the inn's historic setting and charm, which has been adapted for modern life while retaining its 19th-century character. The beautiful location and landscaping are highly appreciated, featuring wildflower gardens and an "awesome" pond suitable for swimming in warmer months. The service is consistently noted for its attentiveness and the friendliness of the staff. Dining at the on-site Ransom Tavern is a significant highlight, celebrated for its delicious food, particularly the wood-fired pizzas. The inn also stands out for being pet-friendly, with specific rooms in the log-lodge accommodating furry companions. Practical amenities like free WiFi and free self-parking, along with an electric vehicle charging station, add to its appeal.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at Kedron Valley Inn are generally described as very clean, comfortable, and cozy. They maintain an antique atmosphere and furnishings while being subtly modernized. Thoughtful amenities include air conditioning, free bottled water, and 42-inch flat-screen TVs with cable channels. However, some guests noted that certain rooms are located in a renovated lodge rather than the main historic house, which felt more like a modern apartment and was not always clearly communicated prior to booking. Recurring issues mentioned include uncomfortable beds that may need replacement, and a lack of in-room coffee machines, with coffee being available only in a common lobby area. While some rooms include fireplaces, they are currently non-functional due to structural issues with the chimneys. One review also mentioned a small, square room and a lack of room service.

4. Dining Experience

The Ransom Tavern, the inn's Neapolitan restaurant, is a major draw. It's renowned for its wood-fired pizzas, antipasto, salads, and craft cocktails, served for dinner from Thursday through Sunday. It has been recognized in publications like Boston Magazine for its unique charm and culinary creativity, emphasizing local ingredients. A pop-up sushi shop also operates on Wednesdays. For breakfast and lunch, guests can visit the South Woodstock Country Store Café next door, which also offers a selection of local products. It's important to note that breakfast is not included in the room rates. Some guests expressed disappointment when discovering the Ransom Tavern was closed for dining on certain days, typically Sunday to Wednesday, during their stay. There was also one criticism regarding the pizza being overpriced and "not well executed," and the tavern service being sub-par.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Kedron Valley Inn consistently receives high praise, with staff described as attentive, friendly, helpful, warm, and professional. Guests have appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and the staff's readiness to assist with needs. Employee reviews also reflect a positive work environment, highlighting professionalism, teamwork, and a family-owned culture where staff feel respected and supported.

6. Location & Accessibility

Kedron Valley Inn is situated in South Woodstock, Vermont, offering a peaceful and picturesque rural setting just five miles from the village of Woodstock. It serves as a gateway to experiencing Vermont's natural beauty and is conveniently located near various attractions such as the Woodstock Town Hall Theatre, Red Wagon Toy Company, and Middle Covered Bridge, all within a 6-mile (10 km) radius. Lebanon Municipal Airport (LEB) is approximately a 33-minute drive away, though the inn does not provide airport shuttle services. Free self-parking and complimentary electric vehicle charging stations are available on-site, enhancing accessibility for guests traveling by car.

7. Value & Pricing

Prices for a one-night stay for two adults at Kedron Valley Inn start from approximately $246.0, excluding taxes and fees, as of late January 2026. However, prices can fluctuate, with some room types ranging up to $800. November is generally the cheapest month to stay, while August tends to be the most expensive. Some guests have felt that the room price was high given the size of the room and the absence of certain amenities like in-room coffee makers or room service. Additional costs include a pet fee of USD 70 per pet, per night, and a late check-out fee of USD 30.00 if available.

8. Common Complaints

Several recurring issues have been noted by guests. The most significant is the restaurant closure for several days during the week (typically Sunday to Wednesday or Monday/Tuesday), which has caught guests by surprise and caused inconvenience. The lack of complimentary breakfast (it's available for purchase at the adjacent Country Store) and the absence of in-room coffee machines are also frequent points of criticism, with some finding the lobby coffee quality lacking. Other complaints include outdated or uncomfortable beds, non-functional fireplaces despite their presence in rooms, and no room service. Some guests also mentioned minor inconveniences such as needing to walk to another building for ice or experiencing issues like a door not locking. A few reviews noted loud construction during their stay.

Woodstock is an expensive town, and overall I think this place offers good value if that matters to you. There are pluses and minuses to consider and it depends on what you're looking for. This is an efficient, no services, no frills, no amenities inn-like motel & I think it is reflected in the price in a town where rooms can be up to $550/night. Pros: It's close to Woodstock, but not in Woodstoc...

Review of hotel only - great proximity to Woodstock, garden is gorgeous, convenient parking, swimming towels provided, daily housekeeping (which is super rare nowadays) and Country Store nextdoor is lovely. Room was not at advertised- tons of extremely steep stairs in the building and in the room to get to the bed, no host on property, "coffee" was a Keurig in the main house only, they couldn't re...

We stayed starting the day after Christmas. Room was clean and cozy. The motel style room is pet friendly so we were able to bring our dog. Location is in a great part of town convenient to shops and restaurants. The country store next store had wonderful friendly women working there who service a delicious breakfast at a great price. My son accidentally left his backpack there and they returned...

Lovely inn where the staff was super friendly and understanding. We booked a two night stay in early August 2017. Our room was full of character and immaculately clean, the only draw back was that it was fairly small, located just above the dining room and the music playing in the dining room made falling asleep difficult. The next morning we asked if any other rooms were available and the staff k...

Delicious brick oven pizza, very fresh with a nice crisp but not burnt crust. The Mediterranean salad had a light dress that left you wanting more. The seasonal drink that we got was decent but strong. Enjoyed the warm interior hime feel of the atmosphere.

We (2 adults, 2 children) stayed for two nights and wish it had been longer! We were in the back cabins which are family-perfect, adults in a downstairs room and kids tucked away upstairs next to a small lounge and kitchen. Much better space than a two-queen standard and very clean. Ate at the restaurant the first night, super friendly and top quality service. Food was amazing - best pizza outsid...
