Expert Review: Surprenantes Destinations

Surprenantes Destinations in Nantes, France, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a truly unique and imaginative accommodation experience, deeply rooted in the literary world of Jules Verne. Guests consistently praise its distinctive design and prime location.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Surprenantes Destinations generally garners a "Good" overall rating, with a Booking.com score of 7.9 out of 10 based on over 200 reviews. Its selection by the Michelin Guide further underscores its quality and unique appeal, although the Michelin Guide itself notes "no verified stays yet" for a guest score on their platform. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stay as "excellent," "unique," and "unforgettable."

Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's imaginative concept, which pays homage to Jules Verne's works with avant-garde, apartment-style suites. The attention to detail in the themed decor is a recurring highlight. Its central location by the Loire River is also a major draw, providing easy access to Nantes' cultural sites and offering river views from many units. The spaciousness of the apartments and the provision of essential amenities are also highly appreciated.

Room Quality

The rooms at Surprenantes Destinations are a central part of its charm, each uniquely themed to reflect Jules Verne's fantastical stories. Examples include the "Voyage in a Balloon" suite with a suspended bed, the "Extraordinary Voyage" room constructed from wooden shipping containers, and the "From the Earth to the Moon" suite featuring a sleek bathroom resembling a spaceship cabin. The aesthetic blends quirky, modern, industrial-chic, and vintage curiosities, often complemented by original architecture like high ceilings, exposed stone walls, and wide-planked wood floors. Rooms are typically well-stocked with luxurious amenities. Many units are apartment-style, featuring living areas with sofas, flat-screen TVs, and some even include DVD players, iPod docking stations, and fully equipped kitchens with microwaves, refrigerators, and coffee makers. Comfort is generally rated highly, scoring 8.3 on Booking.com. However, one guest mentioned that some themed furnishings, like metal chairs, could be less comfortable, preferring softer options.

Dining Experience

While Surprenantes Destinations does not appear to have a full-service on-site restaurant for lunch and dinner, many of its units are apartment-style with fully equipped kitchens, including microwaves, refrigerators, and coffee makers. This allows guests the flexibility to prepare their own meals. The property emphasizes its "eco-labeled soap distributors" and "equipped kitchen" as part of its commitment to guest comfort. Supermarkets and a variety of restaurants are conveniently located within walking distance of the apartments. Some mentions indicate "breakfast drinks" are provided as part of the personalized services.

Service & Staff

The staff and service at Surprenantes Destinations receive positive feedback, with a Booking.com rating of 8.1 for staff performance. Guests have highlighted "excellent communication" and an "amazing" attention to detail, making their experience truly enjoyable. The property is managed by "Les Maisons de Madeleine concierge service," which aims to provide tailored and personalized services, ensuring a welcoming and comfortable stay.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an excellent location in the heart of Nantes, by the Loire River, scoring 8.6 for location on Booking.com. This central position places guests within easy walking distance of major attractions such as the Machines de l'Île, the Jules Verne Museum (approximately 5 minutes away), and the Saint Nicolas Basilica (a 15-minute walk). The area is described as old, beautiful, and vibrant. Public parking is available nearby (for a fee), and the Nantes Train Station is just a 5-minute tram ride away. Nantes Atlantique Airport is also conveniently located about a 15-minute drive from the apartments.

Value & Pricing

Guests generally find Surprenantes Destinations to offer good value for money, reflected in its Booking.com score of 8.2 for this category. Prices for apartments like "De la Terre à la Lune" can start from around EUR 139 to EUR 145. A notable family-friendly policy is that children up to and including 12 years old stay for free when using an existing bed.

Common Complaints

While feedback is largely positive, a minor criticism noted by one guest was the discomfort of some of the themed furniture, specifically metal chairs, suggesting a preference for softer furnishings. Another minor point was the height of a toilet, which might be inconvenient for shorter individuals. General concerns about Nantes as a city, such as some areas near the central tram stop becoming "a bit rough" late at night, or the city not being "spectacular" compared to others, are sometimes mentioned in city reviews but do not directly reflect on the hotel itself, which is centrally located and generally considered safe.

Stayed in the Jules Verne themed apartment, the Earth and the Moon and was fantastic! The room was huge, over two levels, the kids LOVED their rocket bed and the main room downstairs was wonderfully decorated, you could spend days just looking around. We found paid parking nearby without any issues and it's only charge during 9-12 and 14-19, free on Sundays. Restaurants nearby were very good and t...

A wonderful Jules Verne experience in a cosy setting. I was looking for a place for my family in Nantes and they were extremely happy with the surprise. Exploring the room and the special features and artifacts was fun for everyone and we will surely remember this place for the rest of our lives. The rooms have all the basic ammenties, with a special steampunk twist.

We did order impossible to connect with the staff. Order are cancelled and we been waiting for the team to answer the phone. It has been recommended by a friend and I could not still by booking the flat online to visit it. If you are looking for a stable hotel, with answering phone. I recommend another boutique hotel. I am disappointed by how customers are handled here.

What a disappointment; unfortunately!! Themed around Jules Verne, the hot air balloon journey, so full of imagination, invites wonder and surprise. Yes, but here's the thing; the room certainly is surprising!! because it offers a minimalist adventure: once you pass through the gate, the garbage cans greet you at the entrance, releasing their pleasant summer (June) scents. Once you push open the ...

Room for 80 days in a hot air balloon. The location is fantastic: quiet, close to the center, and surrounded by greenery. The decor is very nice, especially the water fountain and the bed lights. However, they really should consider changing the bedding soon and, above all, find a solution to the persistent sewer smell—that's the real drawback!

As an avid traveler, I've had the opportunity to explore various destinations around the world. Unfortunately, some experiences yield less pleasant surprises than others. Recently, I stayed at Surprenantes for two nights in the Jules Verne room. Despite my excitement at the prospect of experiencing the center of the earth at this establishment, a few unforeseen incidents marred my stay. First, fi...
