Expert Review: Mas de la Fouque

Mas de la Fouque, nestled in the heart of the Camargue Regional Nature Park in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France, is celebrated as a tranquil and luxurious escape, earning its distinction as a Michelin Key Selected property. This elegant former Camarguaise sheepfold offers guests a unique immersion into a wild and preserved environment where nature dictates the rhythm.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general sentiment for Mas de la Fouque is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "dreamy escape," "idyllic luxury hotel," and an "exceptional" place to stay. On platforms like Booking.com, it boasts a "Very Good" overall rating of 8.5 out of 10, with a particularly high score of 9.5 for its location.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise the hotel's stunning natural setting amidst lagoons, reeds, and free-roaming horses, often spotting flamingos and Camargue horses. The property features two inviting pools – a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and a heated indoor pool within the Nuxe Spa – alongside lush gardens and lavender fields. The full-service Nuxe spa, offering massages, body treatments, and facials, is a significant draw, providing a serene bubble of relaxation. Regional dining at "La Table de Marius" is another highlight, along with the attentive and professional staff. Additional amenities include an outdoor tennis court, a fitness room, yoga classes, complimentary bicycles, and a library.

Room Quality

The 27 rooms and suites at Mas de la Fouque are individually decorated, designed to provide a "gentle immersion in the Camargue soul." They are described as spacious, charming, and tranquil spaces with white decor, natural hues, and linen bedding, often featuring private terraces or balconies that offer exceptional views of the surrounding marshes or ponds. Accommodations come equipped with air conditioning, free WiFi (with speeds noted at 25+ Mbps), flat-screen TVs with premium channels, minibars, complimentary bottled water, and blackout drapes for restful sleep. Bathrooms often include clawfoot tubs and high-end Nuxe toiletries. For a unique experience, guests can also book luxurious "roulottes" (gypsy chic caravans).

Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, "La Table de Marius," is highly regarded, celebrating local and seasonal Camargue ingredients through generous and refined cuisine. Guests rave about the quality of the food and the picturesque setting, with options for dining on a terraced area overlooking the water. Breakfast is available as continental, buffet, or à la carte, featuring fresh pastries, cheese, fruits, and juice. The hotel also offers an extensive wine list with over 150 selected references. During summer, Friday evenings include "gipsy nights" with barbecues and live music. It's important to note that the restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday evenings, with cold platters available as a replacement if ordered by 3 PM.

Service & Staff

The staff at Mas de la Fouque consistently receives high praise for their hospitality, described as "welcoming," "helpful," "adorable," "professional," "gentle," and "discreet." Many guests highlight their attentiveness and willingness to go "the extra mile" to ensure a pleasant stay.

Location & Accessibility

Mas de la Fouque enjoys an "incredible situation" within the Camargue Regional Nature Park, isolated by a lagoon, providing a secluded and peaceful retreat. It is located approximately 2.5 km (a 10-minute drive) from the center of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The hotel is convenient for nature trips, with the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau nearby. For transport, Nîmes-Ales-Camargue-Cevennes Airport is about 25 miles away, and Arles Amphitheater is 24 miles distant. Free self-parking is available on-site, along with complimentary bicycles for exploring the area.

Value & Pricing

While offering a luxury experience, the hotel's value for money receives a rating of 7.7 out of 10 on Booking.com. Prices for a double room typically range from €201 to €650 per night, with breakfast costing an additional €23 per adult. Some guests have found the pricing to be on the higher side, particularly in situations where room changes occurred, and the original, more expensive rate was maintained despite moving to a cheaper room type.

Common Complaints

Despite the overall positive feedback, some recurring issues have been noted by guests. These include occasional concerns about room cleanliness, with mentions of "small bugs" and some wear and tear on doors/walls in older reviews. Guests staying in "roulottes" during colder weather have reported bathrooms being "glacial" despite reversible air conditioning. There have also been isolated instances of perceived inflexibility from restaurant staff regarding menu choices, although management has reportedly addressed such concerns. Additionally, the spa facilities (excluding the fitness room) require booking treatments for access, and guests under 18 are not allowed in the spa. Some outdoor spaces, such as balconies or patios, may also not be ideally suited for young children.

A Dreamy Escape at Mas de la Fouque! My wife and I just returned from the most wonderful week-long stay at Mas de la Fouque in the heart of Provence, France. Lush gardens, olive groves, and lavender fields surround the beautifully restored 18th...

The breakfast is very poor. Just small croissants and yogurts. Even classic range of cheese and ham are not proposed. Rooms are medium quality for this price. In addition, they smell not enough fresh.

Paid 400 Euros for a caravan/roulette type room we saw on the website and tv documents which advertised it to have paintings and bright pink walls and beautifully decorated fancy gypsy style living with a beautiful view of the water. Instead, we received the caravan/roulette named 'Esmarelda', only to find it was a tiny wooden caravan with barely any room, no decors, dark with no painting nor colo...
