1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Sozo Hotel boasts an "Excellent" overall rating, scoring 8.8 out of 10 based on over 1,230 reviews on platforms like Booking.com. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful," "exceptional," and "fantastic." The hotel is celebrated for its distinctive character, successfully transforming a sacred space into a sophisticated boutique hotel. Its selection as a Michelin Key property further underscores its high standards in design, service, and personality.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are consistently captivated by several aspects of Sozo Hotel:

  • Unique Design: The most praised feature is its setting within a renovated 19th-century chapel, retaining majestic vaulted ceilings, original stained-glass windows, and exposed stone walls. This historic architecture is harmoniously integrated with contemporary art and furniture by renowned designers such as Starck, Panton, and Bouroullec, creating a serene and sophisticated ambiance. The lobby, located in the former choir, with its 17-meter high vault, is particularly impressive.
  • Prime Location: The hotel's position directly opposite the picturesque Jardin des Plantes and just a 4-minute walk from Nantes TGV train station is highly valued for both leisure and business travelers. It offers easy access to Nantes' major attractions, including the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, which are about a ten-minute walk away.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff consistently receives accolades for being amazing, kind, friendly, helpful, welcoming, and highly competent, offering personalized service to enhance each guest's stay.
  • Wellness Amenities: The presence of an extensive wellness area featuring a sauna, hammam, and sensory shower is a significant highlight, offering a relaxing retreat.

3. Room Quality

Sozo Hotel offers 24 individually designed rooms, including an exceptional suite, spread across three categories: Experience, Temptation, and Seduction. Each room is crafted to respect the original architecture, with many featuring elements like vaulted ceilings, apses, columns, and original stained-glass windows. Guests describe the rooms as stylish, spotlessly clean, comfortable, and extremely quiet, ensuring peaceful nights.

Modern amenities include free Wi-Fi, Nespresso coffee machines, kettles, flat-screen TVs, effective air conditioning, and private bathrooms equipped with slippers and quality amenities. Some rooms also offer delightful views of the Jardin des Plantes.

4. Dining Experience

While Sozo Hotel does not have a full-service restaurant for dinner, it features a cozy bar located in the former choir, where guests can enjoy drinks in a unique setting. The reception is always ready to recommend excellent local dining options.

The breakfast experience is highly rated (8.4/10 guest review score), described as excellent, plentiful, varied, and tasty. The buffet includes fresh fruits, local and organic products, pastries, pressed juices, and renowned Beillevaire cheeses, alongside typical breakfast items like bread, yogurt, bacon, and eggs. Continental, gluten-free, buffet, and breakfast-to-go options are available to cater to different preferences.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Sozo Hotel is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Staff members are repeatedly praised for being "amazing," "kind," "excellent," "attentive," "friendly," "helpful," "welcoming," and "competent." Guests often note the personalized attention, with staff going out of their way to make them feel at home and providing tailored recommendations for exploring Nantes. Multilingual staff further enhance the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Sozo Hotel enjoys an enviable location in the Nantes Chateau - Gare district, facing the Jardin des Plantes, one of France's most beautiful botanical gardens. Its proximity to the Nantes TGV train station (just a 4-minute walk) makes it incredibly convenient for travelers.

The hotel is also an ideal starting point for exploring Nantes on foot, with the historic center, Château des Ducs de Bretagne, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, and the Nantes Museum of Arts all within a roughly ten-minute walk. Public transport, including trams and buses, is easily accessible, providing efficient connections to all parts of the city. The surrounding area is generally described as quiet, despite its central location. Nantes Atlantique airport is a 20-minute drive away.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests generally perceive Sozo Hotel as offering good value for money, reflected in a Booking.com "value for money" score of 8.4. While prices naturally vary by season and room type, examples suggest a range from approximately £91 for a standard room to £180 for a deluxe room per night. The unique experience of staying in a meticulously converted chapel, coupled with high service standards and prime location, often justifies the cost for guests seeking a memorable stay.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted:

  • Bathroom Size and Amenities: A few guests have mentioned that some bathrooms can be quite small and occasionally lack sufficient counter space. One review also noted a leaking shower stall.
  • Limited Parking: The hotel offers only 4 private paid parking spots, which are subject to availability and require advance reservation, costing EUR 22 per day. This can be an inconvenience for guests traveling by car.
  • Disposable Cups: A notable recurring complaint is the use of paper or plastic-coated cups in the rooms instead of reusable glasses. Guests find this disappointing for a hotel of this caliber and express concerns about its environmental impact.
  • Inconsistent Dining Area Feedback: While breakfast is generally lauded, one older review mentioned a limited selection and poorly cooked eggs, alongside less friendly staff during breakfast. However, this appears to be an outlier compared to the majority of positive dining and service feedback.

We stayed here for 4 nights and truly enjoyed every moment. The rooms are beautifully designed with stunning glass features that give a unique atmosphere. Room was nice, male staff were nice. Female staff were bad. Upon checking out the female staff with long hair asked me for my room number twice. She still made a mistake and charged me for the wrong room number. A guy had to fix her mistake while she just disappeared. She also asked me for a tip, which I've never heard of before. Also the female cleaner didn't clean our room when we put a sign req...

We stayed two nights and chose this hotel since it offered parking; however, upon arrival after 18h voyage, we we told there was NO parking and had to park at the train station (26€/day). Our suite was strangely configured with the open shower/tub in the middle of the room. Service was very nice and attentive. Location is near train station, most restaurants are about 15-20 minute walk (which we ...

Barely a 3 star hotel. The staff and lobby are nice, but the rooms are as small as ones found in Ibis hotels. The breakfast was not exceptional at all and was very overpriced. The water temperature in the shower was warm at best. The location is okay in the daytime, but at night the neighborhood is sketchy. Frankly I was disappointed as I expected a higher quality hotel

I left an item in the room when I checked out and the hotel contacted me to arrange for its return. That has never happened in my 50 years of using hotels.

This is an old convent church. The rooms are small nit if you are staying a night or 2 orb3 like us it is a wonderful place. The 3rd floor rooms are right up in what was the roof of the original church and the stone work I'd magnificent. It is small bit so beautiful. The staff here were so fantastic. Each and everyone of them so so friendly.
