Expert Review: Shutters on the Beach
Shutters on the Beach: A Quintessential Santa Monica Luxury Experience
Shutters on the Beach, a Michelin One-Key property in the Los Angeles Area, consistently earns high praise as a premier luxury destination, blending the barefoot elegance of the West Coast with refined East Coast charm. With an overall guest score of 18.6 out of 20 from the MICHELIN Guide and ratings often in the 9.0-9.4 range across various platforms, the general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, describing it as an "absolutely stunningly superlative property" and a "beachfront oasis".
Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Shutters on the Beach for its unparalleled direct beachfront location, exceptional service, and sophisticated design by Michael S. Smith, known for his work in the Obama White House. The hotel evokes the charm of a Cape Cod cottage, creating a relaxing yet glamorous atmosphere. Notable amenities include a first-rate ONE Spa, an ocean-facing outdoor pool with cabana service, and complimentary bike rentals to explore the Santa Monica boardwalk. The hotel also offers beach concierge services, emphasizing its dedication to a seamless seaside experience.
Room Quality
The 198 guestrooms and 12 suites are described as luxurious, cozy, and residential-style, reflecting an ocean-inspired palette of blues and whites. Rooms feature high-quality finishes such as hardwood floors, walnut desks, and poster-style beds with plush linens. A significant highlight is the large bathrooms, typically equipped with jetted soaking tubs, separate showers, wide vanities, and Malin+Goetz toiletries. Many rooms, especially all suites, boast ocean views, and some even include a "peek-a-boo" window between the bedroom and bathroom, along with a personal library. While some older reviews noted rooms as "outdated" or "small", more recent feedback emphasizes their comfortable and elegant design.
Dining Experience
Shutters on the Beach offers impressive dining options with breathtaking ocean views. The refined 1 Pico restaurant is celebrated for its seasonal market-fresh cuisine, expansive wine list, and being a popular spot for brunch, lunch, and dinner. For a more casual setting, Coast Beach Café and Bar is ideal for breakfast, light bites, and possibly celebrity sightings. Guests often recommend breakfast at Coast on its patio. The Living Room lounge also serves afternoon tea, cocktails, and a full menu, featuring live music and a cozy ambiance with twin fireplaces.
Service & Staff
The hotel's service and staff consistently receive outstanding reviews. Guests describe the hospitality as "stellar," "exceptional," "delightful," and "amazing". Staff members are frequently praised for being pleasant, professional, kind, and incredibly attentive, often anticipating guest needs and going "above and beyond" to ensure comfort. Housekeeping is noted for being timely and offering twice-daily service.
Location & Accessibility
Perched directly on Santa Monica Beach, Shutters offers a rare and coveted beachfront location. It's conveniently situated within a ten-minute walk of the Santa Monica Pier and a short ride to Venice Beach, making it an excellent base for exploring the Los Angeles area. The hotel also provides complimentary house car drop-off for local sites within a three-mile radius, enhancing accessibility to nearby attractions. While its Santa Monica location is idyllic, guests traveling to other parts of LA like West Hollywood or Beverly Hills should account for potential traffic.
Value & Pricing
Shutters on the Beach is a high-end luxury property, with room rates typically starting from around $703 to $956 per night. While many guests perceive the experience as "worth every penny" due to the exceptional amenities, service, and location, some reviews, particularly older ones, have questioned the "quality to price ratio" or considered it "overpriced". Additional costs such as $80 per day for private parking and charges for in-room WiFi are also noted.
Common Complaints
Despite its high ratings, some recurring criticisms exist. Older reviews occasionally mentioned rooms being "outdated" or "very small" and potentially "not kid-friendly". More recent complaints include issues with drafts from balcony doors during colder weather and the fact that breakfast is not always included in the high room rate, leading to potentially long waits at restaurants that also serve outside customers. The high cost of valet parking and Wi-Fi are also mentioned as drawbacks. Additionally, some guests have commented on the presence of homeless individuals in the broader Santa Monica area, which is a broader concern for the locality.

Sat down at the bar today around 1pm, while we waited for our table and we were completely ignored by the bar tender. 2 other customers walked up to the bar and the bartender took their orders and made their drinks and still never acknowledged us. 10 minutes in of being grossly neglected by the bartender our table was ready. Or server, Alex was amazing and the food was delicious!! Too bad such a l...

Outstanding! I finished a bike ride along Route 66 so it was great to walk 1/2mile to Shutters. There are plenty of food options in the area but the hotel restaurant serves light appetizers and drinks in the lobby (in addition to regular service). The front desk staff was so sweet. I needed to shower after I finished my ride but my husband hadn't arrived yet so they let me use the spa showers. The...

Everyone here actually cares; valet and from being walked to your destination wasn’t a burden. The management team has definitely influenced a high level of excellence here. Not easy to say in 2025 that customer or premium service exists anymore. Almost missed the valet in the front since it’s tiny, but inside pretty cozy and the employees made up the difference in atmosphere/welcoming.

Our first time here and will be the only place we stay when in Santa Monica / Venice. Such incredible staff. The facilities were superb and the food at Coast restaurant was phenomenal. Have a look out for their Mon-Thurs Happy hour! All in all. A very very professional / relaxing experience. Thank you to all staff.
