Hotel June Malibu: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property

Hotel June Malibu offers a charming and serene escape on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, a reimagining of a historic 1950s motel into a modern, stylish boutique hotel. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it is praised for its unique character and laid-back Malibu aesthetic.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel June Malibu leans positive, with guests appreciating its "hip, perfect room" and "private, peaceful, and cozy" atmosphere. Review platforms show varied but generally good ratings, with Agoda noting an 8.0 for staff performance and cleanliness, though a more modest 6.0 for value and facilities. Booking.com rates it "Good" at 7.3 based on 27 reviews, and Tablet Hotels provides a Guest Feedback Score of 17.5 out of 20.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently commend Hotel June Malibu for its mid-century modern design, which celebrates Southern California's soul and historic roots. Key highlights include its status as a private enclave of mid-century bungalows, a heated, guests-only swimming pool, and its lush four-acre setting complete with a running stream. The hotel also boasts a storied past, having hosted artists like Bob Dylan, who reportedly penned "Blood on the Tracks" in Room 13. Thoughtful amenities such as complimentary Linus Bikes and surfboards, a partnership with Open Mindfulness Studio for virtual wellness classes, and in-room massage services via Soothe are highly valued. The property is also pet-friendly.

3. Room Quality

The 13 bungalow-style rooms at Hotel June Malibu are celebrated for their simplicity, bathed in light with white walls and polished concrete floors. Vintage details, such as timbered ceilings and hand-picked art by original owner Wayne Wilcox, add to their unique charm. Rooms are equipped with comfortable Casper beds and linens, premium bedding, and often feature private patios with Dutch doors, some even including hammocks. Modern conveniences like flat-screen televisions, refrigerators, mini-bars (stocked with free boxed water), free WiFi, smart TVs, Bluetooth speakers, Tivoli radios, and Aesop bath products are standard. The brightly patterned batik bathrobes are a unique touch that guests can purchase. Cleanliness is consistently rated high by guests.

4. Dining Experience

Hotel June Malibu offers a "low-key" dining experience, with a restaurant operating out of an Airstream trailer featuring outdoor seating. The hotel collaborates with a local Californian deli, bakery, and cafe to provide a curated menu of light bites daily. While there is no full room service, grab-and-go breakfast items are available for a surcharge, including pastries sourced from Venice's acclaimed Gjusta. The mini-bar in each room serves as a "grazer's paradise" with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Although there isn't an on-site bar, the hotel readily provides recommendations for local dining and drinking spots, including popular choices like Malibu Farm at the pier, Nobu Malibu, Broad Street Oyster Company, Cholada for Thai cuisine, and Lily's for burritos and tacos.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Hotel June Malibu generally receives "rave reviews," earning a notable 8.0 rating for their performance. Guests frequently report being greeted with "warm smiles and attentive service," with staff often going "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable stay. However, some guests have reported less friendly interactions, describing self-check-in services as "bizarre" and feeling that staff were doing them a favor.

6. Location & Accessibility

Nestled on Point Dume, Hotel June Malibu is strategically located on the Pacific Coast Highway, offering a private retreat while still being minutes away from Malibu's famous beaches. Point Dume State Beach is a mere 6-minute drive, and Zuma Beach is about a mile away. Other popular beaches like El Matador, Paradise Cove, and Broad Beach are also easily accessible. The hotel serves as an excellent base for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous hiking trails nearby, including Zuma Ridge Trail, Point Dume Nature Preserve, and Solstice Canyon. For shopping and additional dining, the Malibu Country Mart is a short five-minute drive. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is approximately 24 miles (38 km) away. While the location is ideal for accessing less crowded beaches, it is noted as being "a decent way outside of the main part of Malibu," meaning attractions and amenities are not typically within walking distance. On-site secure parking is available for a daily surcharge.

7. Value & Pricing

Pricing for Hotel June Malibu can range, with a 1-night stay for two adults starting from approximately $301.75. KAYAK indicates an average weeknight price of $364 and an average weekend night price of $427. However, the value proposition receives mixed feedback, with an Agoda rating of 6.0. Some guests have expressed that the rooms can be "very overpriced" given that it is a renovated motel and the perceived lack of amenities, especially if facilities like the pool area are not fully operational due to permitting issues. The additional charge for daily parking, despite the remote location, is also a point of contention for some.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms include the perception of the hotel being expensive for the amenities offered, particularly when compared to its motel origins and the "bizarre self check in services." Some guests have found the exterior "decrepit" and the parking area challenging to navigate and dimly lit at night. Occasional noise from the Pacific Coast Highway has also been mentioned. The modest rating for facilities on some review sites and the additional charge for parking in a less dense area are other common points of dissatisfaction.

We stayed at Hotel June for a couple of nights in January while visiting family, and it completely lived up to the relaxed, thoughtful vibe it’s going for. It felt calm, intentional, and tasteful - not just a place to sleep, but a place connected to its surroundings and stories. Kieran at the front desk was truly outstanding. He was always gracious and welcoming, and I genuinely felt that he enjoy...

Do not stay here! Overpriced for zero amenities and poor customer service. I get they can't help the loud road noise from the PCH, but the rest is complete negligence. There is no one at the front desk/office after 5 pm, so we had to do a weird self check in. I was grateful I asked to have physical keys left outside our door as we never could get the mobile key to work & parking is scary and no l...

Really enjoy this hotel. It’s quaint and very comfortable. Great coffee in the morning. Slightly loud cause right next to highway 1 but not bad and good value! Close to point Dume and other lively spots in dreamy Malibu

Unprofessional and Unhelpful Experience with Front Desk Staff Robyn!!!!!! I called Hotel June Malibu today at 4:30pm to inquire about availability for a reservation tonight or tomorrow. Unfortunately, I was met with extreme rudeness and unprofessionalism from a woman named Robyn who answered the phone. When I politely asked if they rented by the hour (a common question for flexibility), she abru...
