Expert Review: Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel

The Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel, a prominent fixture in Taipei's hospitality landscape since 1981, offers a blend of modern luxury and timeless elegance following a significant renovation in 2018. While not a recipient of the prestigious Michelin Key award itself (the inaugural 2025 Keys in Taipei went to Capella Taipei, Kimpton Da An Taipei, and Mandarin Oriental Taipei), the hotel is distinguished by its culinary offerings, notably housing a One-MICHELIN-Starred restaurant.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel generally garners an excellent overall rating, with guests consistently praising its cleanliness, location, and service. Aggregate scores often hover around 8.8 out of 10, with some platforms showing ratings like 8.6 or 8.5. Many guests express a strong desire to return, highlighting a comfortable and pleasant stay.

2. Key Highlights

Guests frequently laud the hotel's exceptional service, prime location, and well-maintained facilities. The spacious and clean rooms, along with various amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and outdoor pool, are often highlighted. The diverse dining options also stand out as a significant draw for many visitors.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features 683 to 688 well-appointed rooms and suites, designed with a harmonious blend of Chinese and modern aesthetics. Guests frequently describe the rooms as spacious, clean, and comfortable, with particular appreciation for large beds and ample bathrooms. Deluxe King rooms, for instance, are noted for their size and comfort. Many rooms offer city views, and amenities include air conditioning, plush bathrobes, complimentary instant coffee/tea, mini-bars, and 37-inch flat-screen TVs. Executive Deluxe King rooms may feature Nespresso machines and softer bathrobes. Bathrooms are typically large, often including both a bathtub and shower, premium toiletries, and Japanese-style bidet toilets in some rooms. While soundproofing is generally good, some reviews mention that noise from outside construction or other rooms can occasionally be an issue.

4. Dining Experience

The Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel is a culinary destination, offering nine diverse dining options and a bakery.

  • The Guest House: This Huaiyang-Sichuanese fine-dining restaurant holds a One-MICHELIN-Star, having previously held two. It is renowned for delicate Huaiyang classics and flavorful Sichuanese dishes, with particular praise for dishes like "Pork tongue wrapped in pork ear" (whispering), handmade noodles with chili sauce, stewed pork belly, and Sichuan-style spicy chicken wings. Service at The Guest House is generally good, though some guests noted a lack of detailed dish explanations.
  • Kitchen 12: This buffet restaurant, located on the first floor, offers a superb and diverse breakfast spread with numerous Asian and Western options, including live egg cooking stations. Many guests highly recommend including breakfast with the room. However, some experiences in the club lounge for breakfast/happy hour mention more limited options compared to Kitchen 12.
  • The Dragon: A MICHELIN-selected restaurant, The Dragon specializes in Cantonese cuisine and Hong Kong-style dim sum, with signature dishes like roasted baby duck and crispy barbecued pork.
  • The Lounge: Situated near the check-in counters, The Lounge serves strong cocktails and good snacks, such as truffle fries and signature Sheraton beef noodle soup, which is praised for its earthy, fatty, and clove-forward flavor.
  • Other restaurants include a Thai restaurant (Sukhothai), two Japanese restaurants (including Sushi Momo), a steakhouse, and an Italian restaurant. While breakfast is highly praised, some guests found the dinner buffet pricey and not as impressive, and the steakhouse to be very expensive.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback consistently highlights the exceptional service and friendly, helpful, and professional staff across all departments. Many reviewers note that the staff go the extra mile to make stays welcoming and accommodating, sometimes even rivaling Japanese hospitality standards. Concierge services are available, and staff are responsive to requests, although some minor issues like a sewage smell in a room were not fully resolved.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel boasts a prime and highly convenient location in Taipei's Zhongzheng District, close to the commercial, government, and business districts.

  • Public Transport: It is strategically located just a short stroll from Shantao Temple MRT Station (Blue Line), offering seamless connections across the city. Taipei Main Railway Station, a major hub for local and intercity travel, is also within walking distance (about 10-20 minutes depending on the exit and route).
  • Airport Access: Taipei Songshan Airport is approximately 4.0 km away (about a 25-minute taxi ride), and Taoyuan International Airport is about 45 minutes by car or 35 minutes via the Airport MRT Express train to Taipei Main Station.
  • Nearby Attractions: While the immediate vicinity is described as a "boring business district" with fewer tourist attractions right outside the door, the excellent MRT access means popular areas like Ximending, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, and Taipei 101 are easily reachable. Shopping landmarks like Shinkong Mitsukoshi Taipei Station are also nearby.

7. Value & Pricing

With an average room rate ranging from $201 to $250, the Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel is positioned as a luxury option that offers competitive pricing for its premium experience. Guests generally find the value for money to be good to very good, scoring around 8.2 or 7.6. The extensive facilities, exceptional service, and spacious rooms are seen to justify the price point, which is slightly higher than the average hotel room in Taipei ($151-$200). Loyalty program members (e.g., Marriott Bonvoy) can sometimes find very reasonable rates, including using award nights.

8. Common Complaints

While overall satisfaction is high, some recurring issues mentioned by guests include:

  • Breakfast Quality/Value: While generally praised, some reviews on KAYAK pointed out issues with breakfast quality and value for money, despite others finding it superb.
  • Noise Levels: Some guests have experienced noise from outside construction or from other rooms, suggesting less than perfect soundproofing in some areas.
  • Outdated Interiors: While renovated, some areas like The Lounge's interior have been noted as slightly outdated compared to newer Taipei hotel bars. The Guest House also has a somewhat aged, early 2000s interior design.
  • Lack of Amenities/Information on Green Policies: With Taiwan's policy changes regarding single-use toiletries, some guests were unaware and wished to be informed beforehand.
  • Crowding: As a large business and convention hotel, the lobby and breakfast areas can sometimes get busy, leading to waits for elevators or crowded dining experiences, especially during peak times.

We stayed here for 3 nights and were really impressed by the excellent experience. The Lounge and free breakfast for platinum+ members were the best part. Service from every single employee that we’ve interacted with was also exceptional. This is going to be our go-to hotel in Taipei moving forward. Highly recommend Marriott members to stay here when visiting Taipei. There’s a subway station right...

Positive sides: Location, breakfast, 2m x 2m very large bed. I didn't find the room is dirty as other comments. The housing team is helpful when I ask for cleaning the room. Negative side: Must bring your own toothbrush etc., or buy these. The regulations just state that hotels in Taiwan cannot actively provide, but NOT prohibited. I had these when I visited Taipei in another hotels in Nov 20...

We had an amazing stay at the Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel! The room was perfect for families with kids — it was dinosaur-themed and even had a fun slide right in the room, making it a hit with our child. The playroom was fantastic, offering plenty of activities to keep the little one entertained. The breakfast buffet was also excellent, with a high standard of quality and a wide variety of delici...

The exquisite Christmas decorations in the hotel lobby made me feel the festive spirit right away. My stay at the Sheraton Grand Taipei on Dec 23rd was heartwarming from start to finish. Special thanks to Dennis at the front desk for his attentiveness in reminding me about my room key, and Cathy at Kitchen 12 for her proactive guidance through the buffet and the delicious Christmas Stollen. The Sheraton Grand's location is very convenient for travelers. Taking the airport train to Taipei Main Station, and then one stop on the Bannan Line to Shangdao Temple Station is straightforward, leaving just a short walk (Exit 2) to the hotel. My only note is to use Exit 3 if you have luggage, and be aware the final stretch from the station has no cover, so have an umbrella handy in bad weather....
