Saranac Waterfront Lodge: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key Selected Property in the Adirondacks
Saranac Waterfront Lodge, nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Flower in the Adirondack Mountains, offers a contemporary interpretation of a classic lakeside grand hotel and has been recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property. It presents a blend of rustic luxury and natural splendor, aiming to provide a relaxing and immersive experience for its guests.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for Saranac Waterfront Lodge is largely positive, with guests frequently praising its beautiful location, cleanliness, and friendly service. While some guests highlight excellent stays and a wonderful atmosphere, particularly with lake views, there have been recurring concerns regarding value for money, breakfast costs, and past management consistency. Recent changes in ownership and management, however, suggest efforts to improve the overall guest and employee experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love the lodge's location directly on Lake Flower, offering stunning views of the Adirondack Mountains and tranquil waters. The waterfront access, including a private marina and boat slips, is a significant draw, allowing guests to explore the Saranac Chain of Lakes.
Amenities are also a strong point, with highlights including an indoor heated pool, a large hot tub, lakeside fire pits, and a fitness center. The hotel is also recognized for its commitment to sustainability, aiming to be the first LEED-certified hotel in the Saranac Lake and Adirondacks region. The contemporary design harmonizes with the natural surroundings, providing a comfortable and sophisticated atmosphere.
3. Room Quality
The lodge features 93 luxurious guestrooms, including nine suites, some with separate living rooms and walk-out balconies overlooking Lake Flower. Rooms are described as upscale, spacious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed with modern amenities. Guests can choose between town or lake views.
Standard room amenities often include king- or queen-sized beds with premium bedding and down duvets, 55-inch flat-screen TVs with cable, mini-fridges, coffee/tea makers, and free bottled water. Bathrooms are private with shower/tub combinations, bathrobes, and slippers. The rooms also offer free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and daily housekeeping. Pet-friendly accommodations are available.
4. Dining Experience
Saranac Waterfront Lodge offers excellent dining options with a focus on Adirondack-inspired flavors and locally sourced food. The main restaurant, Boathouse (also referred to as Lakeside Drift), offers an all-day menu of elevated gastropub fare and regional craft brews with waterfront views. Some guests have praised the quality of dinner.
However, there have been some criticisms regarding the dining experience. Guests have expressed dissatisfaction with high prices for breakfast, and some instances of limited menu availability or restaurant closure have been noted. While breakfast is available, it often comes with a surcharge. The property aims to offer a culinary journey that reflects the richness of the surrounding landscape.
5. Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service and staff is generally positive, with many appreciating the friendly, helpful, and attentive staff. Reviewers often highlight that good staff contribute significantly to a memorable stay.
Despite overall positive remarks, some past criticisms regarding management and staffing issues have been reported in earlier reviews. However, recent management changes by HEI Hotels + Resorts, and subsequently by Branch Hospitality Group, aim to improve the work environment and ensure best-in-class service.
6. Location & Accessibility
The lodge boasts an ideal location directly on Lake Flower in the heart of the Adirondacks, making it the only full-service waterfront property on the lake in Saranac Lake village. It's within walking distance to Saranac Lake's historic downtown, which is rich with galleries, coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and unique shopping experiences.
The hotel is also conveniently located just a short drive from other popular Adirondack destinations; approximately 10 minutes to Lake Placid (known for its Olympic sites, shopping, and dining) and about 20 minutes to Tupper Lake (home to The Wild Center). Accessibility is further enhanced by its proximity to Adirondack Regional Airport (SLK). The lodge provides free private parking and is wheelchair accessible.
7. Value & Pricing
Saranac Waterfront Lodge is positioned as a more luxurious option in the Saranac Lake area, with room rates typically ranging from $149 to $559 USD per night, depending on the room type and season. While many guests feel the price is justified by the quality of the accommodations and amenities, offering good value for what you get, some have expressed concerns about the overall value for money, particularly regarding additional costs like breakfast. The property's upscale offerings and waterfront views contribute to its premium pricing.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, recurring criticisms include:
- Value for Money & Breakfast Cost: Some guests feel that the overall pricing, especially for breakfast, is high and doesn't always align with the value received.
- Noise Levels & Bathroom Facilities: A few reviews mention issues with noise levels and the quality or design of bathroom facilities.
- Inconsistent Service/Management (Historical): Earlier reviews, particularly from employees, indicated challenges with management and a need for improved work-life balance and culture. However, recent management changes are actively working to address these issues.
- Restaurant Availability/Menu: There have been isolated instances where the restaurant was not fully operational or had limited menu options.
- Ambiance Concerns: One guest noted that the hotel felt more like an "express business hotel" rather than a unique luxury property, with the presence of housed National Guard troops impacting the ambiance.

Wanted to love it here, the check in staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean. That's where it ends. There's no vending machine so hopefully you don't get thirsty or hungry at night when everything is closed, so that was a bummer. The smoke detector flashing a bright green light directly above your bed penetrates your eyelids. THEN the real fun began at 5 am when our upstairs neighbor go...

We really enjoyed our stay here! The staff were super friendly and made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. The location is just beautiful — right by the lake, quiet, and peaceful, which made it such a relaxing getaway. The place itself is well built and very clean. We also tried their lemon raspberry cake slice, and wow, it was absolutely delicious! Would definitely come back again

My friend and I went on a trip, it was late and snowing. Luckily, they responded to our request and booked us for one night. There seemed to be a loud noise coming from the heating fan, so I called reception, and an employee responded and brought us a handheld heater, which was very useful. The room was clean, and the beds were comfortable. I enjoyed my stay and hope to return again.

I stayed there for a wedding. Andrea is the best, she gave us A + service. We asked for two full beds and we got our request. She made our stay pleasant. The welcome chocolate in our room was also sooo good.

There are no words. We had a lake view room. The whole building was clean and well presented. At night the rooms are dark and very quiet! We will stay here again when in the area.
