Expert Review: Cotton Court, Lubbock

Cotton Court, Lubbock, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its unique blend of West Texas charm, modern luxury, and exceptional service. It stands out as a stylish and vibrant boutique hotel, making it a highly recommended choice for both business and leisure travelers in Lubbock.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for Cotton Court is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "wonderful" or "exceptional." On Booking.com, it scores an impressive 9.2 out of 10 across 329 reviews. Expedia shows a 9.6 out of 10 based on over a thousand reviews. Agoda reviews highlight its excellent facilities (9.7), impeccable cleanliness (10.0), and commendable location (9.3). Guests consistently appreciate the beautiful property, welcoming atmosphere, and friendly, attentive staff.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Cotton Court for its distinctive design, friendly staff, and lively atmosphere. The hotel's "artsy, industrial, casual, historical, and simply fun" vibe, inspired by Lubbock's cotton industry heritage, creates a unique guest experience. A major draw is the beautifully landscaped central courtyard, which features a year-round outdoor swimming pool, inviting fire pits for evening s'mores, hammocks, and grassy areas. The presence of live music on weekends at the on-site restaurant and bar, Midnight Shift, further enhances the vibrant ambiance. Additional amenities like a fitness center and complimentary use of bicycles are also highly valued by visitors. The hotel is also noted for being pet-friendly, even hosting a "Thursday Night Yappy Hour" for guests with dogs.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Cotton Court are described as comfortable, spacious, and stylish, incorporating thoughtful touches and designs inspired by the region's heritage. Guests will find air-conditioned accommodations equipped with private bathrooms, city views, free WiFi, work desks, and flat-screen TVs. The decor features carpets patterned to resemble abstract aerial views of cotton fields and pendant lighting reminiscent of old cotton-weaving bobbins. Unique elements include sliding barn doors that open to oversized bathrooms with colorful mosaic tiles, desks styled after antique sewing tables, and wardrobes inspired by bygone factory lockers. Comfort is paramount, with luxurious signature Valencia Beds, lustrous 100% cotton sheets, custom robes, and SMEG refrigerators. Some rooms offer a vintage 1960s feel with retro ceiling fans. For those seeking more space, the suites provide a more decadent experience with features like freestanding tubs and cozy velour sofas. The rooms are also soundproofed, contributing to a peaceful stay.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site Midnight Shift Restaurant & Bar offers a noteworthy dining experience, serving an authentic fusion of Texas-American cuisine curated by Chef Mike Behan. Menu highlights include dishes such as Chicken Fried Short Ribs and Coconut Curry Prawns, complemented by craft cocktails like the Chilton and Guns Up Margarita. The restaurant also contributes to the hotel's lively atmosphere by featuring live music from Thursday through Saturday evenings. While breakfast is available at Midnight Shift and generally considered good, it is not complimentary. Room service is provided daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While many guests praise the excellent food quality, some have noted that the restaurant can be a little overpriced. A minor complaint mentioned was mushy hash browns at breakfast.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Cotton Court consistently receive high marks from guests, who describe them as fantastic, friendly, helpful, and attentive. The hotel is particularly highly rated for its attentive staff. The Valencia Hotel Group, which operates Cotton Court, emphasizes building a brand around energetic individuals who excel at providing warm, caring, and personalized service. However, some internal employee reviews mention "management has quirks" and suggest a high turnover rate to avoid raises, though they also acknowledge "friendly staff, great benefits, excellent pay."

6. Location & Accessibility

Cotton Court boasts a convenient location in Downtown Lubbock, providing easy access to local attractions. It is situated approximately 1.9 miles from Jones AT&T Stadium (Texas Tech University) and is just minutes away from the university campus and the vibrant Depot District. The Depot District is known for its nightlife, diverse restaurants, and entertainment venues, including the renowned Cactus Theater. The Buddy Holly Center/Museum is also nearby. For travelers, Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport is located about 4.3 miles from the hotel.

The hotel is highly accessible, offering a range of features to accommodate all guests. These include elevators to all property levels, accessible accommodations, Braille and tactile signage, visual alarm strobe lights in public areas, and staff who can assist visually impaired guests by reading printed information. Specific accessible amenities include a wheelchair-accessible gym, pool, public washroom, restaurant, and registration desk. Parking options include complimentary self-parking (subject to availability) and valet parking for a fee.

7. Value & Pricing

Cotton Court is often lauded for its exceptional value, receiving a 9.0 rating for value on Agoda. Guests generally express satisfaction with the hotel's rates, considering the high-quality amenities and services provided. While specific pricing can vary, general ranges suggest rates from $129 to $800. Travelers seeking the best deals may find lower prices during the low season, typically in November and December. However, some guests have expressed disappointment regarding the perceived value for the price, particularly concerning the restaurant and bar offerings.

8. Common Complaints

While generally highly rated, Cotton Court has a few recurring issues mentioned by guests. Noise from the courtyard, especially during events with live music, can be a concern for some. Parking availability has also been cited as a challenge, and some guests recommend exploring alternative parking options in advance. There have been instances where the hotel restaurant was unexpectedly closed, advising guests to verify its operating status. In-room complaints include a lack of adequate lighting for applying makeup and, in some cases, issues with hot water availability in showers. Housekeeping concerns, such as unclean floors and insufficient restocking of amenities, have also been reported. Other minor issues include breakfast not being included in the stay, the need to pay for bottled water to make coffee in the room, mushy hash browns, and difficulty with key card access at back entrances. Some guests found the double full beds to be too small, and noise from neighboring rooms due to the construction type has been mentioned. The hotel also has high pet fees, which have been a point of disappointment for some.

We stayed at the Cotton Court for a wedding in Ropesville. My husband and I were SO impressed with the hotel in every regard. The staff was so accommodating, personable, and friendly. The restaurant and bar awesome too. Beds were super comfortable. The mini wet bar and snack bar came in handy in the room. The only thing we wished we had was a microwave in the room. Other than that, an unparalleled...

The cotton court was a 5 star experience. The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was solid, and the atmosphere was top notch. When disaster struck of our room losing hot water while we had a fussy, sick baby the staff went above and beyond to reaccomandate us. They even gave us a voucher for a free dinner. I would definitely stay there again.

Great location. Very clean. Cool vintage fridge. I like that they give you water and BEER upon arrival. The downside is we booked a room for 3 adults. The room they gave us was for 2 adults and a small child. My 6’3” son could NOT fit on the tiny sofa (that didn’t even pull out into a sofa bed). So beware if you need a room for 3 adults!

Very nice hotel. Lots of character.great rooms. Really cool courtyard with open fire pits and hammocks. Sometimes even live music. No breakfast included. They do give you an $18 dollar credit each day for dining. Gratuity is included and or has room service fee which was eats up the $18 in a hurry. Also has a fairly nice restaurant attached with a fun menu. Charcuterie was good. Flatbread pizzas w...

Staying in Room 210. Someone is smoking in their room down the hall. AC vibrates and sounds like it is dying loudly each time it shuts off. Bathroom sink pools when using just a small amount of water. Showerhead sprays in every direction but straight. Shower shoes are a must. Bed is comfy, sheets are clean, and room is well designed, it just hasn't been maintained well. I just wish I could have go...

I've been coming back to Lubbock ever since I graduated from Texas Tech many years ago, and this is by far the best hotel experience I've had in the city. The building and space is very cool without being forced, and our room was large and full of character. Add that to the fact that I could walk to my favorite coffee shop in the city... 10's across the board. Lubbock is lucky to finally have a ho...
