Expert Review: Pestana Palace Lisboa - Hotel & National Monument
The Pestana Palace Lisboa - Hotel & National Monument, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its opulent setting, exceptional service, and historic grandeur. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century palace, the hotel offers a luxurious retreat in Lisbon.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Pestana Palace Lisboa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "truly exclusive experience". Review scores on various platforms hover around 4.5 to 4.8 out of 5, reflecting high satisfaction. The sentiment emphasizes luxury, beauty, and a deeply traditional yet vibrant atmosphere following a massive renovation.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's stunning palace setting, complete with fresh flowers and sprawling, meticulously maintained gardens that are themselves classified as a National Monument. The historical building, unique city-estate ambiance, and rich architectural details, including stained glass, parquet floors, stucco work, and rococo ceilings, are frequently highlighted. Amenities such as the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the award-winning Magic Spa, and the fitness center are also significant draws.
Room Quality
The rooms at Pestana Palace Lisboa are described as spacious, elegantly furnished, comfortable, and notably clean. While rooms in the original palace offer a classical, romantic elegance, those in the modern additions are slightly more contemporary while maintaining the hotel's style. Many rooms, particularly the premium balcony and deluxe garden view options, feature furnished balconies with breathtaking views of the lush gardens or the city. Suites are particularly lavish, some boasting over-the-top furnishings, large bathrooms with claw-foot tubs, and separate showers. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, Nespresso coffee machines, aromatherapy products, bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
Dining Experience
The dining experience is a significant highlight, particularly at the acclaimed Valle Flôr Restaurant. Located in the palace's former ballrooms, it offers a sophisticated setting with frescoes and golden accents, serving high-standard traditional Portuguese cuisine. Breakfast, served daily, is frequently praised as "outstanding," "delicious," and a luxurious affair with a wide variety of options, hot dishes, chef-prepared omelets, and classical music accompaniment. The Allegro Bar provides an informal yet refined atmosphere with live piano music in the evenings and a selection of cocktails. During warmer months, Casa do Lago offers light Asian and international lunches in the garden.
Service & Staff
The staff and service at Pestana Palace Lisboa consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "super friendly," "helpful," "attentive," and genuinely welcoming. Many reviewers note that the staff goes "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel is situated in a quiet, residential district just outside Lisbon's city center, offering magnificent views of the Tagus River. While not within walking distance of most major city attractions, it is conveniently located a short drive (approximately 15 minutes by taxi) from the historic center. Nearby attractions include the Jeronimos Monastery and Belém Tower. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service to the city center, though guests note it can sometimes be full. The Lisbon Congress Center is within walking distance.
Value & Pricing
Pestana Palace Lisboa is considered a luxury property, with an average room price around $384. While this is higher than the average hotel room in Lisbon, many guests feel it offers "exceptional value for money" given the unique historic setting, extensive amenities, and high level of service. The experience of staying in a national monument, combined with top-notch facilities, justifies the cost for many visitors.
Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include the hotel's distance from the historic city center, making a taxi or shuttle necessary for sightseeing. Some guests have also noted that drinks can be pricey. Older reviews occasionally mentioned small TVs in standard rooms and a lack of irons in rooms, though current information suggests 49-inch flat-screen TVs and ironing facilities are available in many rooms. There have also been occasional concerns regarding service quality and minor maintenance issues in some rooms.

We had a wonderful experience here. What truly stood out the most was the hotel staff, every single person we met was incredibly friendly and kind to us. The hotel itself is beautiful, and our room was spotless; you could immediately tell how clean everything was. The fresh smell of the sheets and towels was amazing, something I really appreciate. But again, the staff made the experience exception...

The hotel is a beautiful historic building which it is a pleasure to wander around. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent. It is an excellent choice for a stay in Lisbon. The only star lost was on location as it is a little out of the centre. This. Is peaceful and no problem once one has mastered the bus and tram system.

Great breakfast. Room sound proofing could be improved on the window facing the street, our room would definitely be better if window was adjusted: there's not a lot of gain if the window is double glass and the frame has gaps because it is not well adjusted, with wind and sound clearly crossing the frame... Just for the record we stayed in room 1207. Also it is clear that the room's furniture has...
