THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota: A Sanctuary of Luxury in the Japanese Highlands

THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota stands as a testament to refined Japanese hospitality, having been awarded Two Michelin Keys for an "exceptional stay." This luxurious retreat consistently garners outstanding guest reviews, celebrated for its impeccable service, expansive accommodations, and exquisite culinary offerings amidst the tranquil beauty of the Japanese countryside.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their experiences as "fabulous," "exceptional," and "outstanding." Review scores for comfort and cleanliness are particularly high, often reaching 9.9 and 9.7 respectively, reflecting a superior level of guest satisfaction. The hotel is recognized for providing an exceptional blend of quality and value within the luxury segment.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise the hotel's exceptional service, the luxurious and spacious rooms, and the unique amenity of private hot spring baths in every accommodation unit. The serene natural surroundings and beautiful views across valleys and mountains are also frequently highlighted as major draws. Thoughtful touches like complimentary campfire with marshmallows and hot cocoa, and activities like yuzu baths, contribute to a memorable stay. The distinctive design and deep sense of place further solidify its Michelin Two-Key distinction.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota are celebrated for their spaciousness, luxury, and meticulous design. All 37 guest accommodations, including rooms, suites, and detached villas, are generously sized, with the smallest exceeding 100m² and the largest reaching nearly 235m² including the terrace. Each room features a semi-open-air hot spring bath, a south-facing terrace, and offers either garden or sky views. Guests appreciate the elegant interiors, excellent soundproofing, and superior insulation. Additional comforts include air conditioning, minibars, modern amenities, down comforters, Egyptian cotton sheets, and often a fireplace, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Heated bathroom floors and rainfall showers enhance the luxurious bathing experience.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience is a significant highlight, with the hotel boasting two restaurants: French cuisine at "Le Grand Lys" on the first floor and Italian cuisine at "La Lumière Claire" on the fifth floor, which offers sweeping views of Miyota. Chefs emphasize using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients from the fertile Shinshu region. Guests rave about the exceptional quality, beautiful presentation, and deliciousness of both French and Italian dinners, often describing them as Michelin-star level. Breakfast is equally praised as "fantastic" and varied daily, centering on fresh vegetables, freshly baked bread, and house-made jam. Options for breakfast include enjoying it in the restaurant or having a "Morning Basket" delivered to the room or terrace for a more private experience. Room service is also available.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota receive consistently high praise. Guests report that the staff are "exceptional," "friendly," "helpful," "attentive," and "polite." Many commend the smooth coordination and seamless service from arrival to departure, including proactive assistance like having cars ready without being asked. Personalized check-ins and a genuine commitment to creating a comfortable experience are frequently mentioned. Multilingual staff are also available.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel is situated in Miyota-cho, Kitasaku-gun, offering a peaceful and secluded environment amidst the Okuchichibu mountains. While the hotel's name includes "Karuizawa," it is important to note that it is located about 30 minutes by car from JR Karuizawa Station. It is more accessible from Miyota Station (Shinano Railway), which is about a 10-minute taxi ride away. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service from Shinano Railway Miyota Station, requiring advance reservation. For guests traveling from Karuizawa Station directly, a taxi can cost approximately ¥7,000. Given its somewhat remote location, having a car or utilizing the shuttle service is essential for convenient transport. Nearby attractions include Honmachi Machiyakan (6.2 miles) and Daiasama Golf Club (0.4 miles).

7. Value & Pricing

Guests generally consider THE HIRAMATSU Karuizawa Miyota to offer good value for its luxury and exceptional experience, with prices starting from around US$571. While acknowledged as a premium property, many reviewers feel the cost is justified by the high quality of the rooms, service, and dining, comparing it favorably to other luxury establishments. The inclusion of private hot spring baths in every room adds significantly to its value proposition.

8. Common Complaints

The most consistent criticism concerns the hotel's location and accessibility. Guests frequently mention that it is "inconvenient" and "far from Karuizawa," necessitating a car or reliance on the shuttle service. Some also note that the complimentary shuttle only goes to Miyota Station, requiring a separate (and costly) taxi if heading directly to Karuizawa Station. A minor complaint surfaced regarding birthday amenities being "a bit cheap" compared to expectations at this price point. One isolated review mentioned "food is terrible", however, this is an outlier and heavily contradicted by numerous other reviews praising the outstanding dining experience.

Very spacious rooms and well designed. Plenty of spaces in the hotel to relax and the campfire in the evenings was a nice touch. We had dinner at the French restaurant, the food was good but ambience felt a bit stuffy. There was some confusion on the 12:00 pick up to the station, I had to check on the pick up at 12:07 before we were assisted to our car.

Staff were lovely and the in room Onsen was A1! Loved the pajamas and lounge wear. Food service needs a bit more attention for the quality of hotel. For example no breakfast menu, dishes just served. I also mentio...

Very nice and swanky hotel. Suggest to go as a couple or family for relaxation. There's a onsen in the room and the beverages in the room are great especially the apple and peach juice they provide. Only the alcoholic drinks need to be paid. The onsen gets the water from nearby and it can be open air with the doors opened. The restaurant food was also good but they kept forgetting my dishes. Stayed in Deluxe twin with forest view and hot spring. Impressive luxury hotel with great room layout. Staff service super friendly. But the choices of uncoordinated ingredients and poor cooking skill killed the French+Japanese dining experiences. This is rather a great disappointment despite all the ingredients freshly selected. Luxury Hospitality key to success lies in maintaining consistency. ...

It's the best luxurious onsen hotel I stayed in Japan, although their English ability is very limited, still they tried hard to communicate and it's not an issue to me during my stay. Excellent service, very attentive staff, great food and amazing view. It even has a music room with a turntable and a good collection of vinyl records. It's located in a small town 30 mins away from Karuizawa, if yo...
