One Aldwych, a distinguished five-star hotel in London's vibrant Covent Garden, has earned a "One Michelin Key" rating, signifying a very special stay. Guests consistently praise the hotel for its blend of classic Edwardian architecture with contemporary, independent design and a tranquil atmosphere despite its central location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for One Aldwych is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "outstanding," "luxurious," and a "perfect home to return to". It often receives exceptional ratings, with one platform noting a 9.6 out of 10 based on 616 reviews. The hotel is celebrated for its ability to provide a serene retreat amidst the bustling city.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud One Aldwych for several key aspects:

  • Location: Its prime spot in Covent Garden is repeatedly highlighted as ideal for theatre, sightseeing, dining, and shopping.
  • Service: The staff are frequently described as "faultless," "amazing," "friendly," and "attentive," providing incredible service from check-in to check-out.
  • Design & Art: Housed in a listed 1907 Edwardian landmark, the hotel boasts a stylish, contemporary interior with a curated collection of over 400 pieces of modern art by UK-based artists.
  • Amenities: The health club, featuring an 18-meter chlorine-free indoor pool with underwater music, a sauna, steam room, and a 24-hour gym, is a significant draw. A complimentary, daily restocked minibar is also a much-appreciated amenity. The hotel also prides itself on its sustainability efforts, including no single-use plastics and beehives on the roof.

3. Room Quality

One Aldwych offers 101 spacious guestrooms and suites, often described as feeling more like private residences. Rooms are "beautifully appointed and designed," with an "understated elegance" and a pastel palette, such as gentle blues and lavenders. Features often include:

  • Spaciousness: Rooms are noted as being "enormous by London standards," with suites offering ample space to spread out.
  • Comfort: Beds are frequently praised as "incredibly comfy" with "soft and fluffy" pillows and fine linens.
  • Amenities: In-room amenities include Nespresso machines, Bang & Olufsen speakers, Loewe UHD TVs, Dyson hairdryers, and locally sourced items in the minibar. Marble bathrooms come with walk-in rain showers, soaking tubs, heated floors, and quality toiletries. Triple-glazed windows ensure peace and quiet. Many rooms offer views of the London skyline, including the London Eye or Waterloo Bridge.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers a notable dining experience with two restaurants and a popular Lobby Bar.

  • Indigo Restaurant: Overlooking the Lobby Bar, Indigo serves modern European cuisine focusing on British ingredients from independent producers. It is particularly known for being entirely dairy-free and gluten-free, with a vegetarian tasting menu also available, often impressing guests who wouldn't realize the dietary restrictions. Breakfast options are made-to-order and include buttermilk waffles, avocado toast, and a divine vegetarian cooked breakfast.
  • Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar: This restaurant showcases modern Basque cuisine.
  • Lobby Bar: Described as "buzzing" and "energetic," the Lobby Bar is a vibrant spot for cocktails, bar food, and light lunches, and is famous for its afternoon tea.
  • Afternoon Tea: The "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"-themed afternoon tea is a particular highlight and a "golden ticket" for families, also available in a gluten- and dairy-free version.
  • Room Service: 24-hour room service is available, offering comforting classics.

5. Service & Staff

Service at One Aldwych is consistently praised as impeccable and attentive without being overwhelming. Guests highlight the staff's professionalism, friendliness, and willingness to assist with any request, from arranging show tickets to providing personalized notes and treats. The in-house concierge and knowledgeable staff are a significant asset.

6. Location & Accessibility

One Aldwych boasts an "unbeatable" and "perfect" location in the heart of London's Covent Garden.

  • Neighborhood: It's situated directly opposite the Lyceum Theatre and within feet of several other theaters, restaurants, and museums.
  • Attractions: Many of London's most famous historic sights are within easy walking distance, including the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the London Transport Museum, the Thames, Big Ben, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, and Somerset House.
  • Transport: The hotel is highly accessible by public transport, with Covent Garden (Piccadilly line), Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern lines), and Temple (Circle and District lines) Tube stations all less than a 10-minute walk away.

7. Value & Pricing

One Aldwych is considered a luxury five-star hotel, and its pricing reflects this. While specific rates vary, nightly rates for a standard room can range from approximately $680 to over $2,000, with breakfast costing around GBP 40 per person. Despite the cost, many guests feel it offers good value for money due to the exceptional service, prime location, and luxurious amenities. As a "One Michelin Key" property, it represents a "very special stay".

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms occasionally surface:

  • Breakfast Service: One past review mentioned that breakfast service could be less attentive on busier mornings, though this was a past observation and recent reviews have praised it.
  • Lift Design: One guest noted the reflective nature of the lifts made it difficult to tell if they were present, leading to minor confusion.
  • Restaurant as a "Culinary Destination": While dining is generally highly rated, one reviewer suggested it might not be considered a top "culinary destination" if that's a primary priority, specifically mentioning the main restaurant being vegetarian (though Indigo also offers non-vegetarian options). This is a subjective point, as other reviews highly praise the dining.

I came to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea for the second time and it did not disappoint. The staff were amazing especially Pio and Uzundu. We could not have asked for better service. The food was brought out in the perfect timing. The other reason why I recommend this place is that the gluten free option is amazing. They also do gluten free with the vegan and vegetarian options...

We stayed at One Aldwych over New Year’s for several nights and overall had a very pleasant stay, although there are a few details that could be improved. The hotel has a boutique feel and the location is excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and professional, especially the doorman, who did a great job throughout our stay. The spa was okay, but nothing particularly special. The pool and ...

The staff and level of service is the best we have ever experienced. The Dome Suite is incredible, room service steaks were perfect! The in house florist Mark does a fantastic job with flowers in every room. Andrew the porter is 5 Stars and all our thanks to Hannah in guest relations for planning the most amazing stay! Don't forget to check out the spa too.

This hotel is all about class. The staff are amazingly attentive and detailed oriented to ensure your entire experience is divine from beginning to end. The restaurant is spectacularly good and amazing that the entire menu is gluten free and accommodating to those with intolerances. Well done! Great for business meetings as well. I didn’t want to leave.
