Expert Review: MOGANA
MOGANA in Kyoto, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise from guests for its unique blend of modern design, exceptional service, and tranquil atmosphere in the heart of the city. It is often described as a "hidden gem" offering a luxurious and memorable stay.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Review scores for comfort, cleanliness, and staff often exceed 9.0 out of 10, indicating a highly satisfying guest experience. The general sentiment is one of awe and delight, with many guests expressing a strong desire to return.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud MOGANA for several standout features:
- Impeccable Service: The staff's attentiveness, friendliness, and willingness to go above and beyond are frequently highlighted.
- Exquisite Design: The hotel's aesthetic, a harmonious blend of modern luxury and traditional Japanese elements, is a major draw. Its minimalist and contemporary style, featuring clean lines, black granite, and subtle traditional touches like ikebana arrangements and bonsai, creates a chic and peaceful environment.
- Spacious Rooms: Unlike many Japanese hotels, MOGANA's rooms are noted for their generous size, offering a refreshing sense of space and comfort.
- In-Room Breakfast: The delicious and beautifully presented Japanese breakfast, served directly to the room, is a memorable highlight for many.
- Tranquil Ambiance: Despite its central location, the hotel provides a quiet and relaxing retreat from the city's bustle.
- Complimentary Bar: Guests appreciate the sophisticated bar, which offers a free daily cocktail, adding to the luxurious experience.
3. Room Quality
MOGANA's rooms are a testament to thoughtful design and comfort. They are notably spacious for Japanese standards, with standard double rooms measuring around 32 square meters and deluxe options up to 55 square meters. The design is ultra-modern and minimalist, often featuring a monochromatic palette (such as striking black or light-filled white rooms) with natural materials like earthen walls, timber floors, and luxurious black granite in the bathrooms.
Guests praise the comfortable beds, luxurious shower areas, and high-quality amenities. Rooms are equipped with modern conveniences such as climate-controlled air conditioning, mini-bars, coffee/tea makers, and Dyson hair dryers. While there are no televisions in the rooms to maintain a serene atmosphere, projectors can be borrowed. Some rooms also boast private balconies or unique views of a vertical green wall or gardenias, embracing the Japanese concept of "borrowed scenery."
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at MOGANA is primarily centered around its highly acclaimed in-room breakfast. Guests consistently rave about the "amazing," "beautiful," and "delicious" Japanese (Washoku) and continental/Asian breakfast options. It features local ingredients, often sourced from Awaji Island, and is presented elegantly on locally made Awabi-ware ceramics. The meal typically includes a variety of fresh vegetables, proteins like chicken or salmon, side dishes, fruit, a smoothie, and bread. Guests must order breakfast two days in advance.
The hotel also features a stylish bar on the second floor, exclusive for guests, which offers a selection of premium spirits, signature cocktails, and fine wines, including a complimentary daily cocktail. While there isn't a full-service restaurant, room service provides a limited à la carte menu, including soba dishes from the renowned Kyoto restaurant Honke Owariya.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at MOGANA receive exceptional reviews. Guests describe them as "impeccable," "attentive," "friendly," "very helpful," and going "above and beyond." Many highlight the personable nature of the service, attributing it to the hotel's intimate number of rooms. Staff are praised for their professionalism, kindness, and for providing unexpected touches such as complimentary drinks and Japanese cookies. Their grasp of English is generally sufficient to assist international guests effectively.
6. Location & Accessibility
MOGANA is strategically located in the Nakagyo Ward, a central district of Kyoto, on a quiet street. This allows for a peaceful stay while still being highly accessible to popular attractions. It is within a 7-minute walk of the Kyoto International Manga Museum and approximately 0.8 miles from Nijo Castle. Other nearby attractions include Nishiki Market, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the Gion district.
The hotel offers excellent access to public transportation, being a short walk from subway stations like Nijojo-mae and Karasuma Oike, which provide connections to Kyoto Station and other parts of the city. Several bus lines are also conveniently located nearby. For guests with vehicles, paid private parking is available on-site with prior reservation.
7. Value & Pricing
Guests generally consider MOGANA to offer good value for its luxury and unique experience, often rating its "value for money" highly (e.g., 8.7/10). While specific pricing can vary, a one-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $203.81. It's important to note that Kyoto levies a city tax, ranging from JPY 100 to JPY 10,000 per person per night, depending on the room rate, which is collected separately by the property. Given its Michelin Key selection and the boutique nature of the hotel, the pricing reflects a premium experience.
8. Common Complaints
While overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive, a few minor issues have been occasionally reported:
- Inconsistent Housekeeping/Cleanliness: One guest experienced issues with dirty glasses, unremoved trash, and dusty drawers over several days.
- Air Conditioning Placement: Some guests found the air conditioning vents blew directly onto the bed, making it difficult to use comfortably while sleeping.
- Lack of Blackout Shades: The absence of blackout shades meant that sunlight could enter the room early in the morning.
- Limited Room Service: The à la carte room service menu is quite limited, and breakfast requires a two-day advance order.
- Bathroom Privacy: One review mentioned a lack of a curtain in the bathroom, allowing light to pass through.
- Provided Pajama Sizing: A guest noted that the provided pajamas were quite small.
- No In-Room Televisions: Guests seeking in-room entertainment might miss a TV, though projectors are available.
- Children Policy: The hotel has an adults-only focus, not permitting children aged 5 and younger.

This was our second time staying here. We love everything about this place! The service is exceptional, the staff are friendly and go out of their way to assist you. The rooms are spacious, with a cloud-like bed and a stunning bathroom with stone bathtub. The daily breakfast is always beautifully presented and very filling. Thank you, Mogana, see you when we’re in Japan next!

While I don’t write many reviews I felt I needed to give my opinion one this Hotel. Location is on a side street, walking into this Hotel was quite scary to me. The main entrance is a blank dark metal automatic door, once opened you see a floor to ceiling glass door which is actually a window. Almost went right through it. The door to the reception area is another blank dark metal automatic door...

The hotel has an incredible design; the rooms are spacious and well-organized. However, it is not a five-star hotel, starting with the service, which leaves much to be desired—especially by Japanese standards and compared to other hotels we've stayed at in Japan. Only two staff members spoke English and were able to communicate with us. One staff member was consistently rude and unhelpful, making ...

Starting with opportunities, there aren't black out shades so the sun was tickling our eyes by 4:30am each morning. I would like to see them add something to the windows to help with room darkening. Mattresses (ours and the day bed for our daughter) were not quite as hard as a rock but were VERY firm. Lights are automatic and the light in the bathroom is quite bright if you have to get up for a ...
