Expert Review: Le Grand Mazarin

Le Grand Mazarin, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property in the heart of Paris's vibrant Marais district, has rapidly established itself as a truly unique and highly acclaimed luxury boutique hotel. It offers a "whimsical world" with an "eclectic and very colorful dolls-house" aesthetic, distinguishing itself from minimalist luxury trends.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Le Grand Mazarin is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently rating their experience as "fabulous" and "excellent." Michelin Guide guests have given it an impressive overall experience score of 19.4 out of 20. The sentiment is one of enchantment and high satisfaction, often described as "magical," "unbelievable," and "perfect."

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by several standout aspects of Le Grand Mazarin:

  • Design: The "gorgeously decorated" interiors by acclaimed Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki are a major draw, characterized by a maximalist, Belle Epoque-inspired, yet whimsical and colorful style. Details like hand-made wallpaper, ornate glassware, tapestries by Art de Lys, and curated artworks contribute to its unique charm. Many find the design "stunning" and "artfully decorated."
  • Service: "Top-notch service" and "exceptionally polite and helpful" staff are frequently highlighted. Guests consistently praise the "incredible service/staff" and their attentiveness, often noting personalized touches such as remembering names and providing thoughtful amenities.
  • Location: Situated in the "heart of the Marais," the hotel boasts an "excellent location" that is both central and vibrant, offering easy access to attractions like Notre Dame, the Seine, Hôtel de Ville, and a plethora of shops and galleries.
  • Amenities: The hotel's unique underground swimming pool, adorned with a colorful Jean Cocteau-inspired fresco by artist Jacques Merle, is a significant highlight and a rare find in the Marais. Guests also appreciate the full-service spa with a hammam, hot tub, and fitness center. Complimentary soft drinks in the minibar are another appreciated touch.

3. Room Quality

The 61 rooms and 14 suites at Le Grand Mazarin are consistently described as "stunning," "beautifully designed," and offering "perfect comfort." They feature luxurious details such as king-size bedding, herringbone parquet flooring, designer lamps, and tapestry canopies. Guests report comfortable beds and thoughtful amenities like air conditioning, private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and minibars with some free items. Some suites boast balconies, and interconnecting rooms are available for families. Bathtubs are typically found in the suite categories.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's restaurant, Boubalé, overseen by Michelin-starred chef Assaf Granit, offers a unique culinary experience.

  • Cuisine: Boubalé specializes in a personal interpretation of Eastern European Ashkenazi and Levantine cuisine, blending oriental memories with Polish classics. Dishes like tahini hummus with pita, herbed salads, and chicken breast with sumac are served on vintage plates.
  • Atmosphere: The restaurant is described as a "big bold statement of gastronomic intent," with a bustling open kitchen and a vibrant bar area. It can also offer a "soothing place" in its winter garden.
  • Breakfast: A fresh buffet breakfast is available, offering continental, American, and fresh pastry options. It is often cited as lovely and satisfying, though it comes with an additional fee of approximately EUR 45 per person.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Le Grand Mazarin receives consistent high praise. Staff are described as "impeccably mannered," "exceptionally friendly and helpful," and attentive to detail. Guests often mention staff going "above and beyond" to meet their needs, remembering their names, and assisting with reservations. Butlers are also on hand to accommodate guest whims. The concierge team is highly regarded for its expertise in unlocking the neighborhood's secrets and arranging bespoke experiences.

6. Location & Accessibility

Le Grand Mazarin is ideally situated in the 4th Arrondissement, in the "beating heart of Paris" within the fashionable Le Marais district. This "lively, avant-garde district" is known for its paved streets, historic buildings, museums (such as Carnavalet Museum and Musée Picasso), art galleries, and boutiques. Key attractions like Notre Dame Cathedral (an 8-minute walk), Sainte-Chapelle (less than 0.6 miles), the Louvre Museum (a 16-minute stroll), and Hôtel de Ville are all easily accessible. Public transportation is convenient, with Hôtel de Ville Metro Station just 3 minutes away and Saint-Paul Station 7 minutes away.

7. Value & Pricing

Le Grand Mazarin is a luxury 5-star property, and its pricing reflects this. While acknowledged as "not a bargain," guests generally feel it is "worth the cost" given the exceptional service, unique design, prime location, and high-quality amenities. Typical prices for a one-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $609.75, excluding taxes and fees. Buffet breakfast and valet parking incur additional charges. The overall sentiment suggests that the "incredible service, heavenly decor, [and] perfect location" justify the investment for a magical Parisian experience.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of feedback can be observed:

  • Pool Temperature: One guest noted the pool temperature was "a bit too hot for my liking."
  • Pricing for Extras: The additional fees for buffet breakfast (around EUR 45 per person) and valet parking (EUR 55 per day) are separate from the room rate.
  • Bathtub Availability: Bathtubs are primarily found in the suite categories, which might be a consideration for guests staying in classic rooms.
  • Cash Transaction Limit: Due to national regulations, cash transactions at the property cannot exceed EUR 1000.

We had such a lovely stay at Le Grand Mazarin. I ended up getting food poisoning at a cocktail bar somewhere in the city and they took such great care of me by changing my linens often, bringing my tea, and checking in on me. Very posh property but worth the expense. They also treated my mother like a princess on her birthday and gave her champagne. Great location and great people.

Absolutely wonderful staff, breakfast and accomodations. Everybody was friendly and helpful with us as foreign visitors. The turndown service was nice, the room cleaning schedules were a little odd, but they were very accommodating for our schedules. Rooms were clean, well laid out and the pool/spa/steam room was beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Absolutely love this beautiful, cozy hotel in Le Marais district of Paris. A 5 to 10 minute walk to Notre Dame cathedral and all of the attractions in the area. And an even shorter walk to many restaurants and shops in Le Marais. The hotel rooms are beautifully appointed, impeccably clean, large for Paris, and the beds are incredibly comfortable. The warm, friendly, welcoming and attentive staff a...
