Expert Review: La Citadelle

La Citadelle, Metz, France: A Comprehensive Review (Michelin Key Selected)

Nestled within a captivating 16th-century military building, La Citadelle Metz MGallery offers a distinctive blend of historical charm and modern luxury, earning its selection by the Michelin Key. This 4-star hotel generally garners positive feedback, particularly for its prime location and comfortable, spacious accommodations.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for La Citadelle is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it as "excellent" or "superb". It's highly recommended by many visitors who appreciate its unique character and high standards. The overall sentiment is that of a beautiful, stylish, and very comfortable hotel.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of La Citadelle:

  • Location: The hotel's central position between the train station and the city center is a major draw, offering easy access to Metz's main attractions.
  • Design & History: The transformation of a 1559 military bastion into an elegant hotel, combining stone, steel, and glass, is a unique and appreciated feature. The historical setting adds a special dimension to the stay.
  • Spacious Rooms: Many guests highlight the generously sized rooms as a significant positive.
  • Cleanliness: The hotel is consistently praised for its impeccable cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Pet-Friendly: La Citadelle welcomes pets, a feature appreciated by many travelers.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at La Citadelle are described as large, luxurious, and comfortable, offering a modern design despite being housed in a historic structure. They feature contemporary and spacious layouts, with amenities such as individual air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-bars, safes, and Nespresso machines. Bathrooms typically include a tub, and guests receive bathrobes, slippers, and quality hospitality products. Some guests have noted that room lighting could be improved. For those seeking scenic views, opting for a room with a balcony facing the fountain is highly recommended.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's bistronomic restaurant, "La Réserve," receives rave reviews for its innovative and tasty cuisine, blending local flavors with exotic influences. Situated in the citadel's former food-storage warehouse, the restaurant offers a pleasant and historic atmosphere for both lunch and dinner. The quality of the dinner is often praised.

Breakfast, however, receives more mixed feedback. While some guests enjoy a varied and high-quality buffet with continental, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, others have found the choice limited or the food, particularly hot items, not warm enough. There have also been specific complaints about the quality of the regular breakfast coffee, though espresso was generally found to be good. The "Ambiance lounge bar" offers a wide selection of whiskies, cocktails, champagne, and wines in a warm setting.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on the service and staff is generally positive, with many describing the team as very friendly, helpful, attentive, and professional. Guests have appreciated the flexibility with early check-in and the overall willingness of the staff to ensure a pleasant stay. However, some recurring criticisms mention that service, particularly during breakfast and at the restaurant, can be slow or that staff appeared overwhelmed or unmotivated. A few instances were noted where staff were not fully informed about certain policies or services.

6. Location & Accessibility

La Citadelle boasts an excellent and privileged central location at 5 Avenue Ney, situated between the train station and the city center. It is ideally positioned for exploring Metz's historical and cultural attractions.

Nearby Attractions (walking distance):

  • Arsenal de Metz
  • Templar's Chapel
  • Palais du Gouverneur de Metz
  • Place de la Republique
  • The Esplanade / Esplanade Garden
  • Metz Palais de Justice

  • Centre Pompidou-Metz

Metz-Ville Station is approximately a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute drive away. The hotel is also well-connected by local bus services, with a bus stop nearby. While parking is available on-site, some guests found it limited and potentially challenging, especially during busy periods like the Christmas Market. The hotel offers accessibility features, though some guests have noted specific challenges with limited lighting in rooms and unconventional shower setups.

7. Value & Pricing

La Citadelle is considered a quality hotel, and while specific pricing varies by dates and room type, rates for a standard room can range from approximately $203 to $307 USD, with suites starting around $487 USD. Many guests feel that the hotel offers good value for its historical setting, prime location, and comfortable amenities.

8. Common Complaints

While generally well-received, some recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Service during peak times: Complaints about slow or unmotivated service, particularly at breakfast and in the restaurant.
  • Breakfast variety/quality: Some guests found the breakfast choice limited or the hot food not warm enough, and the regular coffee quality was occasionally criticized.
  • Room lighting: A few guests mentioned that the lighting in the rooms could be improved.
  • Parking: While available, parking can be limited and occasionally challenging.

Super hotel located in impressive building!Very friendly staff. We booked via the website which was very transparant, easy and clear (cheaper then via booking.com or other). They have a private parking for 18 euros per night (also on the website and/or in the booking confirmation) wich is very convenient. The location is great (quiet place but still in city center). As hotel owner (in Belgium), I ...

Usually we have something which is of leather or soft material with soft edges but this is not equal to bed size, it is longer. B) ac dont work not sure why there is a thermostat in the room lucky it had windows so we opened for...

For example we thought a light may not be working and a member of staff went immediately to address the matter. Child's garments left behind were despatched to us and arrived at our addr...

We stayed here for a quick stopover on our way home. Luckily we arrived in time and snatched one of the last parking spots. The hotel is walking distance to the city center and is next to a park. Check in was fast and the receptionist was nice. The lobby is modern but feels more like a fancy bus terminal with guests sleeping on the sofa. The restaurant was nicely decorated, the room not so much. ...

A former military stronghold from 1558, this is an amazing hotel located 5 minutes from the historic town center. My room was huge and nicely decorated with a very comfortable bed. Nice views to the park across from the hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Nicola was especially helpful and even gave me a short history of the town. One of the most unique hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms are i...
