Hotel El Roblar, Ojai Valley: A Michelin Key Selected Oasis of Historic Charm and Modern Luxury
Hotel El Roblar, nestled in the picturesque Ojai Valley, offers a sophisticated yet comfortable retreat that has earned it a coveted Michelin Key selection. The hotel, which reopened in summer 2025 after a sensitive restoration, seamlessly blends its Spanish Revival architecture with modern design elements, creating a powerful sense of place that resonates with guests.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Guests consistently describe Hotel El Roblar as "as close to flawless as you can get" and "a wonderful hotel," according to Michelin Guide verified guest reviews, achieving an overall experience score of 19.5 out of 20. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting a refreshing and lovely experience, particularly for those looking to explore Ojai on foot.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly charmed by the hotel's thoughtful design, which pays homage to the Ojai Valley with Monterey-style furnishings and locally sourced artworks. The grounds are notably verdant, featuring gardens with palm and dragon trees and Spanish-style fountains surrounding the pool, all set against the backdrop of the Los Padres Forest and Topa Topa mountains. Unique amenities that delight guests include the presence of two Aldabra giant tortoises, Abra and Cadabra, residing in the walled garden by the bungalows, and a handful of first-come, first-serve bikes for exploring the area. The hotel also prides itself on its sustainability measures, utilizing renewable energy, energy-efficient systems, and non-toxic cleaning products.
3. Room Quality
The 50 guest rooms are divided across the Main Building, private bungalows with large garden patios, and the newly built Sycamore House. Rooms embrace the natural surroundings with warm, earthy shades and layers of natural wood. Many bungalows boast kiva-style fireplaces and private courtyards. While rooms in the main building are described as feeling "completely fresh and like it's been there forever," some guests note that the layout can lead to less privacy from the hallway compared to new-build hotels. Turndown service, including "truly excellent chocolate chip cookies," is a welcome touch.
4. Dining Experience
Hotel El Roblar offers two distinct dining venues: La Cocina and Condor Bar. La Cocina serves breakfast and lunch exclusively to guests in a handsome space, with options to supplement a buffet with kitchen dishes. The Condor Bar, open for dinner, specializes in California-Mexican cuisine prepared on a Santa Maria-style wood-fired grill, complemented by local wines, cocktails, and a strong collection of agave spirits. The restaurant's walls are adorned with condor images and artifacts, creating a unique "natural history museum" dining atmosphere. A European-style breakfast is included with stays.
5. Service & Staff
While specific detailed guest feedback on individual staff interactions is limited in the provided snippets, the Michelin Guide rates "Services" at 18.6 out of 20, indicating a high standard of hospitality. The overall sentiment of "As close to flawless as you can get" suggests that the service contributes significantly to the positive guest experience. Amenities such as a 24-hour front desk, valet parking, concierge, multi-lingual staff, and wake-up service further point to a professional and attentive service approach.
6. Location & Accessibility
Located on Ojai Avenue, Hotel El Roblar is praised for its highly walkable location, allowing guests to easily explore the town. The hotel is situated in the center of Ojai, an ideal base for experiencing the area's charm, spiritual bent, and spectacular setting. While the location offers convenience, some rooms in the main building might experience constant noise from Ojai Avenue, the town's main thoroughfare. The property offers parking, with valet parking available for a fee.
7. Value & Pricing
Hotel El Roblar is a luxury boutique hotel, with nightly rates starting around $455 to $495 and up. This pricing includes a $30 per day resort fee and typically an additional $50 nightly for valet parking, plus taxes. Guests generally perceive the experience as worth the cost, particularly for the unique design, amenities, and overall atmosphere. The hotel offers complimentary amenities like European-style breakfast, morning coffee, daily bottled water, Wi-Fi, and access to the swimming pool. Plus members may receive perks like room upgrades, a complimentary bottle of wine, and a welcome treat.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor issues have been noted:
- Noise from Ojai Avenue: Rooms in the main building, particularly those facing Ojai Avenue, can experience constant noise from the street.
- Air Conditioning: One guest mentioned the air conditioning occasionally shutting off in the middle of the night.
- Room Layout in Main Building: The layout of some main building rooms, with the bathroom across from the foot of the bed, can lead to less privacy from the hallway.
- Additional Fees: The resort service charge and valet parking fee are additional costs guests should be aware of.
- Adults-Oriented Property: The hotel is primarily designed for adults (18 years and older), with limited accommodation options for children and no rollaway beds.
- No Spa (Yet): While plans are in place for a 9,000-square-foot spa and wellness facility to open in the next 18-24 months, it is not currently available on-site.

I was so excited to finally stay at Hotel El Roblar, and it completely exceeded my expectations!! Even though it is only a few months old, it already runs like a well-oiled machine and, in my opinion, it's easily one of the most special hotels in California and definitely the best hotel in Ojai. The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Ojai, and the decor, service, and amenities perfectl...

This place was an absolute oasis, the perfect getaway for two from the busyness and claustrophobia of LA. Nestled right on the Strip in Ojai, the location couldn’t be more ideal. You’re steps away from incredible shops, cozy bars, and all that Ojai has to offer. That said, the hotel’s own Snug Bar and Condor Bar were so exceptional that you barely need to leave the property. The Snug Bar had such...

Spent two nights here as a little 40th celebration and everything was fantastic. The rooms are well appointed, cozy. Our room had a terrace with a fountain - gorgeous and peaceful. The breakfast was delicious (the banana bread!!) The staff are wonderful. Could not be friendlier.

My wife and I stopped in for a drink as we were spending the day walking around the Main Street in Ojai, and were pleasantly surprised with the fantastic service and drinks from Eric the bartender. He was so friendly and helped us plan out the rest of our day, which involved coming back to the hotel to eat at Condor, which had some of the most fantastic food I’ve ever had. My wife and I will defin...
