Expert Review: Hôtel de l'Image
Hôtel de l'Image, a Michelin Key Selected property in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, offers guests a charming retreat blending its history as a cinema with contemporary design and amenities. Set within a beautiful 2-hectare garden with views of the Alpilles, the hotel is praised for its prime location and unique atmosphere.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Hôtel de l'Image is largely positive, with many guests rating it as "Excellent" or "Very Good" for its location, facilities, and ambiance. It is recognized as an upscale hotel offering comfort and practical amenities. However, some negative experiences, particularly concerning air conditioning and dated rooms, bring down the average for a minority of travelers.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's exceptional location in the heart of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, making it ideal for exploring the town. The serene 2-hectare garden, complete with a labyrinth and an outdoor pool, is a significant draw, providing a peaceful escape. The hotel's unique history as a former cinema and music hall, now featuring a gallery and photography workshop, adds to its distinctive character. The design is often described as rustic country minimalism with blonde wood and glasswork, creating a chic and refreshing ambiance.
3. Room Quality
Hôtel de l'Image features 32 individually decorated rooms and suites, designed with a contemporary chic style, often incorporating boutique furnishings and white-washed walls. Rooms are equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, 24-hour room service, premium bedding, bathrobes, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and minibars. Superior rooms often include a terrace overlooking the garden and the Alpilles. A particularly notable option is the "Treehouse" suite, connected by a gangplank and built atop one of the property's large plane trees. While many find the rooms comfortable and well-appointed, some guests have described them as "old & tired" or noted issues with air conditioning, especially during hot weather.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant, Les Terrasses de l'Image, and cocktail bar offer French specialties made with fresh products. Michelin Guide mentions a hybrid Japanese/French cuisine served on the terrace with views of the gardens and Alpilles. Musical entertainment, snacks, and a fine selection of drinks are also available. A daily buffet breakfast is available for an additional fee, generally receiving positive feedback. However, some guests have reported that the restaurant did not seem prepared for lunch guests, sometimes being full or running out of food.
5. Service & Staff
Guest feedback on service and staff is somewhat mixed. Many guests praise the staff as "nice" and highlight excellent bar staff. However, there are instances of negative experiences, with some travelers reporting rude or argumentative receptionists and an unhelpful response to issues like malfunctioning air conditioning or lack of information about local events. Inconsistent room servicing, such as floors not being swept or pool towels not being replenished, has also been noted.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hôtel de l'Image boasts an unbeatable central location in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, directly in the heart of the city. This allows for easy navigation of the town and quick access to local attractions. It is situated in a 2-hectare garden looking out onto the Alpilles, providing a tranquil setting despite its central position. Nearby attractions include the Alpilles Natural Regional Park, Centre d'Art Presence Van Gogh, Musée Estrine, and Collegiale Saint-Martin de Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The hotel also offers bicycle rentals for exploring the area and is about 8 km from Les Baux-de-Provence. Free private parking is available on-site.
7. Value & Pricing
Hôtel de l'Image is considered an upscale property, and its pricing reflects this, with rates typically ranging from approximately $226 to $533 USD, depending on the room type and season. Guests generally find the location and certain amenities to be worth the cost, particularly those who appreciate the beautiful gardens and central access. However, some guests have expressed concerns about the value, especially when experiencing issues like non-functioning air conditioning, which they felt was unacceptable for the summer price. Optional extras such as buffet breakfast (around EUR 20 for adults) and rollaway beds (EUR 25 per night) add to the overall cost.

Loved the location and staff, lovely people and very helpful. The basic rooms were just that, basic, comfortable but not up to any 4 star rating in my experience. Spent the last two nights of a four night stay in an upgraded room, comfortable and roomy but still a stretch to say four stars. Still, I would recomend this hotel, the location and staff are first rate.

This hotel seemed like it once was a very nice hotel, but it appeared to be either understaffed or not well taken care of. The rooms were nothing special, and there was a lingering smell of sewage in the room, maybe from disuse. I would have rated it lower, but the front staff was so friendly and so very helpful. The location was great with very easy walking to the towns attractions. The breakfas...

This is a very comfortable hotel on a main street in St. Remy de Provence ,easily accessible, with many onsite amenities but also right across the street from great restaurants and shops . Excellent walking in the area. We had a spacious room that felt more like a small apartment. Very quiet. Helpful staff. Great breakfast in the morning, bar services in the evening. Onsite restaurant.

Amazing location, very friendly staff, beautiful grounds. The rooms are quote small and outdated, but that wouldn't have been an problem if it weren't for the maintenance issues. Seems like there are some management issues here and it's unfortunate because it is a lovely place with charming people.

A very nice hotel in the center of St Rémy with tourist sights and restaurants within walking distance. The large garden behind the hotel are well maintained and has a English garden style maze/labyrinth. A very positive experience. If you are there on a Wednesday walk to the awesome farmer’s market.
