Expert Review: Domaine de Chalamon
Domaine de Chalamon, a Michelin Key Selected property in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, offers guests a luxurious and tranquil escape within a beautifully renovated 16th-century bastide. Part of the esteemed Fontenille Collection, this intimate hotel is widely praised for its exquisite design, serene setting, and exceptional service.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
Domaine de Chalamon consistently receives high praise from guests, with an overall "wonderful" rating of 9.0 out of 10. Reviewers frequently describe it as "beautiful," "charming," and a "special place" that feels like staying in a private chateau. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.
Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enchanted by the hotel's aesthetic and peaceful environment. Key highlights include:
- Design & Ambiance: The property showcases a natural, understated style with pastel color schemes, rattan chairs, and ceramics, blending contemporary simplicity with a classic Provençal atmosphere. It's celebrated for being "extremely beautiful and exactly like the pictures."
- Gardens & Pool: The 37-acre estate boasts 15 acres of magnificent, meticulously cultivated gardens designed by Dominique Lafourcade, featuring boxwood hedges, topiary, cypress, pine, laurel, and olive trees. Guests appreciate the tranquil gardens and the lovely, heated outdoor swimming pool with its elegant pink parasols.
- Intimacy & Privacy: With only 19 rooms, including seven suites, the hotel offers a sense of privacy and seclusion.
- Amenities: Facilities include a sun terrace, tennis court, free WiFi, and complimentary bicycles for exploring the surroundings. Yoga classes are also available.
Room Quality
The rooms at Domaine de Chalamon are consistently described as "beautiful," "stylish," "big," and "spacious." They maintain a harmonious balance between the charm of a historic residence and modern hotel comforts. Guests note the rooms are exceptionally clean, tidy, and soundproofed for a relaxing stay. Standard amenities include air conditioning, private bathrooms with free toiletries (including Susanne Kaufmann products), flat-screen TVs, mini-bars (some items free), refrigerators, and wardrobes. Hypo-allergenic bedding and free cribs are also available upon request.
Dining Experience
Domaine de Chalamon offers a highly-rated breakfast experience, but the dining options for lunch and dinner are more limited:
- Breakfast: A "superb" and "delicious" daily buffet breakfast is served, featuring viennoiseries, breads, cakes, charcuterie, cheeses, yogurt, fruit, cereal, and eggs cooked to order.
- Lunch & Dinner: While some sources from 2023 mention a Provencal bistro with vivid flavors by chef Rémi Falsquelle, other, more recent reviews and descriptions indicate there is no traditional full-service restaurant on-site for dinner. Guests can, however, pre-order charcuterie plates or other snacks, and in-suite snacks are available all day. The hotel bar serves wines from the Fontenille group's vineyards.
Service & Staff
The service and staff at Domaine de Chalamon receive overwhelmingly positive feedback. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "pleasant," "helpful," "friendly," and providing "impeccable" service. One staff member, Sacha, was specifically mentioned for being "incredibly friendly and helpful" and going "above and beyond" to make guests feel welcome.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel enjoys an "excellent location" on the tranquil edge of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. While secluded amid 37 acres of parkland, it is conveniently within a 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk to the town's restaurants and cafes.
- Transport: Free on-site private parking is available. Avignon TGV Train Station and Avignon Central Station are both approximately 12 miles (30 minutes by car) away. Marseille and Montpellier airports are also accessible, about an hour and 90 minutes away respectively.
- Accessibility: Two of the hotel's rooms are suitable for wheelchair users, and the lobby and public bathrooms are accessible.
Value & Pricing
While specific price ranges vary, Domaine de Chalamon is considered a luxurious escape. Guests generally rate its "value for money" as 8.1 out of 10. The Michelin Guide guarantees the best prices for bookings. An example rate cited was approximately EUR 362.30.
Common Complaints
While overall reviews are highly positive, a few minor points have been raised by guests:
- Lack of Full-Service Restaurant: The most consistent "complaint" or point of notice is the absence of a traditional, full-service restaurant for dinner on-site. While snacks and pre-ordered options are available, guests looking for a full dinner experience at the hotel might find this a limitation.
- Reception Manned Irregularly: One guest noted that the reception desk was not always continuously staffed, which they found unusual for a high-quality hotel.

Absolutely gorgeous property. Perfect for a quiet weekend getaway. Unfortunately, the tv in our room didn’t work(not sure if it had to do with the internet or tv service provider) also there was NO room service, mini bar or a working restaurant in the hotel. Very minimal breakfast served which reflected no working restaurant on premises.

The property is beautiful and in a gorgeous garden setting. However the experience I have had has been definitely not up to standard I was expecting having stayed at another property from this group, particularly at this price level. There is basically no service, the food is terrible, I had lunch and dinner (as my husband was not well and did not go into Remy), very limited menu and the food tas...

A great location in St Remy. Not right in town, but a 5 minute drive. Near a bike and walking trails so you can get a little exercise before the next gluttonous feast. Sacha and Karin are fabulous hosts and take care of everything you could want. The hotel and rooms are very clean and the grounds are beautiful. Highly recommended.

A beautiful beautiful place! We loved the privacy. The pool was refreshing and the garden around it is just stunning! Tennis in the morning was just what we needed and there were bicycles too. Now- the ‘house’. Stunningly beautiful, renovated with great style. We’ve enjoyed playing games in the ‘living room’ and loved our suite with a bath. We couldn’t take our eyes off the building and a beautifu...
