Expert Review: A Mandria di Murtoli

A Mandria di Murtoli, a Michelin Key Selected property nestled in the picturesque Ortolo valley near Sartène, France, offers a unique blend of rustic charm and sophisticated luxury. While praised for its stunning natural setting and authentic design, guest experiences suggest a divergence in service quality.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for A Mandria di Murtoli is mixed but leans towards positive for the property itself, with notable criticisms regarding service. Guests frequently describe it as "Special, Beautiful, Unique, Beyond" and an "exceptional" destination. However, some reviews highlight a significant "disconnect between the five-star rating and pricing, and the service and general treatment of guests". While many laud the beautiful property and welcoming staff, others found the service to be lacking, leading to a "5 star prices, 2 star service" perception.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently adore the splendid setting and untamed beauty of Corsica. The resort is celebrated for its ability to foster a sense of peace and relaxation amidst nature and silence. Key highlights include:

  • Stunning Location: Nestled in the Ortolo valley at 600 meters altitude, offering pure air and bright light.
  • Authentic Design: Traditional Corsican sheepfolds and stone barns have been elegantly restored into luxurious accommodations, blending rural charm with modern comfort. The architecture, featuring dry stone and lauze roofs, seamlessly integrates with the landscape.
  • Nature-Based Experiences: Opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, stargazing, botanical walks, paddleboarding, kayaking, and aquagym in the sea are offered.
  • Well-Maintained Property: The grounds, including olive, lemon, and lavender gardens, are described as gorgeous and meticulously kept.
  • Tranquility: The absolute tranquility of the Corsican maquis is a significant draw for those seeking to disconnect.

3. Room Quality

The rooms and suites at A Mandria di Murtoli are described as sanctuaries of comfort and elegance, full of character with a blend of rusticity and modern amenities.

  • Design: Expect ancient, vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, tastefully decorated in a neutral palette with stunning lighting design. Raw materials like wood, stone, and linen in natural, soothing tones dominate the interiors.
  • Comfort & Amenities: Rooms are spacious and include plush bathrobes, hair dryers, televisions with satellite/cable channels, minibars, coffee/tea makers, and complimentary bottled water. High-quality toiletries, linens, and towels add a touch of luxury.
  • Variety: The property offers ten rooms and suites, some of which are converted sheepfolds with private swimming pools and hidden gardens. Many rooms feature private balconies or terraces with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape or gardens.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at A Mandria di Murtoli is designed to be a delightful experience, emphasizing local and seasonal produce.

  • Appuntamento Restaurant: The on-site restaurant, Appuntamento, offers authentic Italian cuisine inspired by Mediterranean traditions, with most ingredients sourced directly from the estate's farm or carefully selected local producers. Meals feature sun-drenched fruits and vegetables, fresh herbs, fragrant oils, and exceptional meats and cheeses, often prepared with brazier-style cooking.
  • Domaine de Murtoli Restaurants: Guests also have privileged access to other restaurants within the larger Domaine de Murtoli estate, including La Table de Plage (beachside), La Table de la Grotte (in a natural cave), and La Table de la Ferme, which is a Michelin-starred restaurant highlighting seasonal products from the farm and local producers. La Table de la Ferme is known for its exceptional Corsican produce, including langoustines, vegetable soup with local herbs, and local seafood.
  • Breakfast: Breakfast at the sister property is often described as superb.
  • Ambiance: The Appuntamento restaurant offers an intimate and generous interlude under hundred-year-old olive trees.

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is varied. While many guests report positive interactions, others have experienced issues.

  • Positive Feedback: Staff are frequently described as "incredibly helpful and very kind", "gentle, discreet and very benevolent", and attentive, living up to a 5-star standard.
  • Criticisms: Some guests reported "mixed reviews," citing "criticized service quality and management attitude". Issues included "confusion and flippancy," feeling like their "presence was more an irritation," and "blasé attitude and distaste" when asking for directions. Problems with room readiness and luggage confusion were also mentioned.

6. Location & Accessibility

A Mandria di Murtoli is situated in a secluded, natural setting, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility and a disconnect from daily life.

  • Neighborhood: It's a "luxury hamlet" or "village reinvented" set on a mountainside within the vast Domaine de Murtoli estate. The hotel is nestled in the Ortolo valley, offering spectacular views.
  • Attractions: The primary attractions are the natural surroundings and the activities offered on the estate, such as hiking, horseback riding, and access to a private beach. There is also a 12-hole golf course designed by Kyle Phillips on the wider Domaine de Murtoli.
  • Transport: One complaint mentioned difficulty accessing the hotel via Google Maps, leading to a dirt lot. Distant beach access was also noted as an issue for some.

7. Value & Pricing

The pricing for A Mandria di Murtoli is considered to be at the luxury end, with double rooms starting from €265 per night in low season. However, the value for money is a point of contention for some.

  • High Price Point: Guests acknowledge the "high prices".
  • Value Concerns: Some reviewers expressed concerns that the high prices did not consistently match the expected service level of a five-star establishment. Costs such as $17 for a beer or $60 for 12 golf balls were specifically mentioned as examples of high pricing.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms primarily revolve around service inconsistencies despite the luxury pricing and setting.

  • Service Discrepancy: The most prominent complaint is the gap between the perceived 5-star pricing and the actual service quality and guest treatment.
  • Staff Attitude: Some guests experienced unhelpful or "blasé" attitudes from staff.
  • Operational Issues: Specific issues included "room readiness" problems, "confusion with luggage," and "poor wifi connectivity".
  • Accessibility: Difficulty with directions upon arrival and the "distant beach access" were also mentioned as drawbacks.
  • Dining Variety: One review noted "unchanging restaurant menus" as a criticism.

A Mandria di Murtoli was nothing short of a spectacular stay. The grounds were beautiful and the room rich with luxe touches, fixtures, and amenities. The staff were inviting, accommodating, and paid great attention to detail. We enjoyed two dinners on the grounds during our stay (one at A Mandria, one at Murtoli) and both times we were treated with top service and care. Like many destinations on...

5 star prices, 2 star service. A Corsican dilemma… Upon arriving to the hotel, my wife and I pulled into a dirt lot — not accessible, I will add, via Google maps. We were not greeted and carried our luggage ourselves up a steep hill, searching for staff. Eventually, we ran into someone who told us our room wasn’t ready, but nevertheless said they would give us tour of the room that would be ours....

The setting is absolutely magnificent, a true little corner of paradise! The place invites relaxation and is worth the detour in itself. Unfortunately, the food doesn't live up to the decor. The parmigiana was dry and not generous, and the ravioli, while very good, were only six in number... For Italian cuisine renowned for its generosity, this is a bit disappointing. Finally, the €15 tiramisu was...
