Expert Review: Graduate by Hilton Ann Arbor

Graduate by Hilton Ann Arbor, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive and memorable stay characterized by its unique design, prime location, and dedicated service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Graduate by Hilton Ann Arbor generally receives positive feedback, with an overall rating of 8.9 on Agoda and 8.1 on Booking.com. Guests frequently praise the hotel's charm, stylish decor, and excellent location. While the overall sentiment is highly favorable, some recurring issues relate to cleanliness and noise levels.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several standout features of the Graduate Ann Arbor:

  • Location: Its unbeatable location in downtown Ann Arbor, directly across from the University of Michigan campus, is a major draw, providing easy walking access to attractions, restaurants, and shops.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's "funky and cool" or "super chic" aesthetic, with its mid-century modernist retro decor and thoughtful touches, is frequently mentioned as a reason for a pleasant stay. The ambiance often evokes a "college vibe."
  • Service: The staff is consistently described as friendly, accommodating, and going "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant guest experience.
  • Amenities: On-site dining options, free Wi-Fi, a fitness center, and its pet-friendly policy are also appreciated.

3. Room Quality

The hotel boasts stylish and well-appointed rooms designed with comfort in mind. Rooms feature tasteful decor, plush bedding, and high-speed Wi-Fi. The design incorporates a mid-century modernist retro style with color schemes often featuring the University of Michigan's maize and blue, along with warm textures like tweed and natural wood. Guests can also expect Malin + Goetz amenities. Many rooms offer impressive, far-ranging views due to the building's elevation. While often described as clean and comfortable, some guests have noted small bathrooms and occasional issues with cleanliness, particularly in bathrooms.

4. Dining Experience

Graduate Ann Arbor offers two distinct dining experiences:

  • Poindexter Coffee: A coffee shop in the lobby, Poindexter Coffee sets a "studious tone" and serves coffee, and popular breakfast sandos.
  • Allen Rumsey Cocktail Lounge: This retro-themed bar and supperclub-style restaurant specializes in "hearty American fare" and classic drinks served in cozy booths. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Breakfast is available for a fee and sometimes described as "lackluster" by some guests, with one instance of limited availability (e.g., out of yogurt). However, others praise the "good quality food/drinks" at the restaurant and coffee shop.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Graduate Ann Arbor consistently receives high marks, with staff performance rated at 9.3 out of 10. Guests frequently describe the staff as "incredibly friendly," "accommodating," and "amazing," always ready to assist with requests and create a welcoming atmosphere. Valet parking services are also noted for their efficiency and friendliness.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a significant highlight, receiving an impressive rating of 9.8. It is centrally located in downtown Ann Arbor, "just across the street" from the University of Michigan campus, and within easy walking distance to various attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas. Nearby points of interest include the U of M Hospital (9 minutes by foot), Michigan Stadium (1.4 miles), and Kerrytown Market and Shops (0.4 miles). Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is approximately 25-30 miles away, with taxi or ride-sharing services being common transport options. Valet parking is available for guests. The property is also LGBTQ+ friendly.

7. Value & Pricing

While offering a blend of luxury and convenience, Graduate Ann Arbor's pricing tends to be higher than the city's average. The average room price can be around $355, compared to Ann Arbor's average of $162. However, some reviews suggest it offers "exceptional value for money" for its combination of quality and prime location. Prices booked on KAYAK have ranged from $104 to $295 in recent weeks, with Fridays typically being the most expensive.

8. Common Complaints

Despite its many positives, guests have reported a few recurring issues:

  • Cleanliness: Some guests have noted cleanliness issues, particularly in bathrooms, and observed debris or worn furniture in public spaces.
  • Noise: Noise levels have been a consistent complaint, with some guests experiencing disruptions from loud conversations among workers, drilling, or general construction noise.
  • Dining Consistency: While generally positive, some guests found the breakfast selection to be lackluster or experienced issues with item availability.
  • Wi-Fi Issues: A few guests have reported problems connecting to the hotel's Wi-Fi.
  • Room Readiness: On occasion, rooms were not ready by the standard check-in time.

The room and location are lovely, and the front desk staff are warm. Unfortunately, the lost and found experience left a lot to be desired. We changed rooms mid-stay and I accidentally left my personal pillow behind. Over the next two days I had to return to the front desk five or six separate times — no one ever followed up with me once. Each time I was met with vague assurances that it was "dif...

The Graduate Ann Arbor is an older historic building with charm. No it's not a 5 star hotel, but it's not just a 4 star either. It is a limited service hotel with valet, luggage service, on site restaurant, gym, and nice public areas. It does not have room service nor a spa or pool. Valet parking and private parking garages are available. This is a must as parking is at a premium in Ann Arbor. Roo...

We will be back! Ben & Gary were amazing & very knowledgeable. I asked a lot about Ann Arbor & outdoor activities. We felt very welcome & loved the coffee shop. Also the valet attendants kept me company while I drank coffee & chatted about Florida & the weather in Michigan. It was like talking with my own kids. 10/10

All in all, it is a comfortable enough place in the location is fantastic. Parking is a nightmare unless you use valet at $40 a night. The rooms don’t have much for amenities and are very old school with a school graduate theme which is cool, but doesn’t really do much for me. No easy food options no breakfast no snack food available so it’s a little tough compared to a nice suburban hotel.

Response from the owner

Hi Jeff, we appreciate your feedback on the location and our rooms. We're sorry to hear that the parking situation and lack of food options didn't meet your expectations. Your comments are valuable, a...

Very nice hotel with excellent staff and service. We were there for 3 days for a wedding. The hotel was very accommodating of our dog Mildred who was allowed to hang out in the bar. The bar food was good as was breakfast. The proximity to downtown and campus is convenient and you have close access to a lot of dining, bar and shopping options.

Response from the owner

Thank you for staying with us, Chris! We appreciate your feedback and would love to have you stay with us again. We look forward to your next visit to Ann Arbor!

As a routine traveler, The Graduate is a go-to for myself and my colleagues. We book almost weekly stays throughout the US, and this one is not living up to the standard. Hotel is clean, folks are friendly. However, there is no vending and no pantry. Good luck if you are hungry. I arrived after a late flight (11 pm) to discover that I could “walk to the 7 Eleven” two blocks away (in the snow) if ...
