Expert Review: Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs
Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs: A Comprehensive Review (Michelin Key Selected Property)
Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs, nestled in the heart of Calistoga within the renowned Napa/Sonoma Valleys, stands as a distinguished wellness destination, recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property. Having undergone a significant renovation in 2020, the resort seamlessly blends its iconic mid-century modern charm with contemporary comforts, offering guests a unique and rejuvenating experience focused on its famed mineral springs and mud baths.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Dr. Wilkinson's is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its serene atmosphere, excellent service, and prime location. It boasts an "Excellent" rating from numerous travelers, with high scores for cleanliness, staff, and comfort. The resort is celebrated as an ideal getaway for those seeking relaxation and wellness.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Dr. Wilkinson's:
- Spa & Wellness Focus: The geothermal mineral pools, iconic mud baths, and a full-service spa are central to the resort's appeal. The mineral waters are certified by the Balneology Association of North America for their healing properties, including strengthening skin and relaxing the nervous system. Many consider the mud bath experience a unique and highly recommended indulgence.
- Design & Ambiance: The resort successfully maintains its retro charm from its 1952 origin while incorporating fresh, modern design elements. The mid-century aesthetic, complete with playful pops of color, natural woods, and custom artwork, creates a tasteful and serene environment. The "backyard" concept, featuring outdoor entertainment areas, a firepit, and hammocks, is also a significant draw.
- Relaxing Pools: The property offers two outdoor pools and an indoor pool, all of which are mineral-fed and heated to different temperatures, providing a superb and relaxing experience for guests.
- Helpful Staff: The staff receives top marks for being friendly, attentive, and helpful, often going the extra mile to explain amenities and ensure a pleasant stay.
3. Room Quality
The 50 guestrooms and cottages have been completely refreshed, offering a blend of modern amenities and nostalgic design. Guests appreciate the spacious and comfortable rooms, featuring natural woods, wide windows, and retro furniture. Many highlight the quality of the mattresses and super soft bedding, ensuring a restful sleep. Thoughtful amenities like essential oils and in-room bottled water and coffee are also noted. Some rooms may offer courtyard views.
4. Dining Experience
The resort features an on-site all-day restaurant, House of Better, and a bar/lounge with outdoor patio seating. Cooked-to-order breakfast is available for a fee. While the restaurant is praised by many guests, some have found the menu limited, particularly regarding plant-based or wheat-free options, given the resort's wellness focus. Prices for dining can also be a consideration for some.
5. Service & Staff
Exceptional service is a recurring theme in guest feedback. The staff is consistently described as friendly, courteous, attentive, and helpful. Reviewers often mention positive interactions with front desk staff who clearly explain the resort's offerings, including the pools and amenities.
6. Location & Accessibility
Dr. Wilkinson's is perfectly situated on Calistoga's main street, Lincoln Avenue, offering a "totally central" location that makes it easy to explore local retail and dining options. It's conveniently close to popular attractions such as Calistoga Hot Springs, Castello di Amorosa, Sterling Vineyards, and Chateau Montelena Winery. The resort does not offer airport shuttle services, but self-parking is available for a surcharge.
7. Value & Pricing
Nightly rates for Dr. Wilkinson's typically start from around $239 to $247, though prices are subject to change based on dates and availability. Guests should also factor in a resort fee of USD 34.50 per accommodation, per night, which includes additional inclusions, in-room bottled water, in-room coffee, and parking. While some guests consider it a good value, particularly for the design and amenities offered in Napa Valley, others advise being mindful of potential additional fees. The lowest prices are generally found in February and August, with Tuesday and Monday often being the cheapest days to stay.
8. Common Complaints
While generally very positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Dining Options for Dietary Restrictions: A specific complaint raised is the limited variety of plant-based and wheat-free meal options at the on-site restaurant, House of Better, which was disappointing for some guests expecting more health-forward choices at a wellness retreat.
- Lack of Balconies: Some guests expressed a desire for balconies in their rooms.
- Shower Design: A minor complaint mentioned a preference for different shower bottoms, noting some appear to have a plastic base.
- Noise Levels: Rooms facing the main road may experience some traffic noise at night, leading some to advise requesting a room away from the road for a quieter stay.
- Heater and Door Noises: In some instances, guests have reported issues with noisy heaters and doors.
- Additional Fees: While disclosed, the resort fee and potential extra charges have been noted as something for guests to be aware of.

We decided to take a last minute trip to Calistoga and had stayed at this resort before the renovations and were excited to see the changes - we absolutely LOVED it! Still the quaint old(er) feel but with modern conveniences. The House of Better had great food, we spent the evening lounging on the big couches enjoying the firepit, and watched the full moon from the hammocks. Rocky and Jose made us...
