Expert Review: Auberge du Soleil, Auberge Collection

Auberge du Soleil, an Auberge Collection property nestled in the Napa/Sonoma Valleys, stands as a distinguished three-Michelin-Key hotel, renowned for its luxurious escape and impeccable service.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Auberge du Soleil consistently garners overwhelmingly positive reviews, often cited as one of the top luxury properties in the United States and a standout in Napa Valley. Guests frequently describe their experience as "excellent" and a "masterclass" in hospitality, reflecting an overall sentiment of unparalleled luxury, serenity, and memorable stays.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly enchanted by several aspects of Auberge du Soleil:

  • Service: The staff's attentive, friendly, and proactive approach is frequently highlighted as a "masterclass" in hospitality, with personalized touches such as remembering guest preferences.
  • Location & Views: The resort's secluded setting on a 33-acre hillside olive grove provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Napa Valley and Mayacamas Mountains, which are central to the guest experience.
  • Dining: The Michelin-starred restaurant is a significant draw, offering exceptional cuisine and an extensive wine list in an unforgettable setting.
  • Adults-Only Atmosphere: The property is an adults-only retreat, appealing to couples seeking a romantic and tranquil getaway.
  • Amenities: The luxurious spa, chic outdoor pool, fitness center, and complimentary use of a Mercedes-Benz fleet are highly appreciated by guests.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Auberge du Soleil, comprising 50 rooms, suites, and private maisons named after towns in the south of France, are designed with a blend of Napa's laid-back luxury and Provencal countryside charm. Rooms are described as large, airy, bright, and well-appointed, recently renovated by designer Suzanne Tucker. Standard features include private terraces, often with gorgeous valley views, super-king beds, open fires, and lavish bathrooms with large free-standing tubs, separate sink vanities, and showers with natural light. Luxurious touches like Italian linens, complimentary minibars, Nespresso coffeemakers, and daily fresh fruit enhance the comfort. Some private suites and maisons even offer outdoor soaking tubs and rainfall showers.

4. Dining Experience

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, a historical landmark that predates the hotel, boasts a Michelin star, which it has held for 14 consecutive years. Executive Chef Robert Curry's menu features seasonal, Mediterranean-influenced dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Dining on the sweeping panoramic terrace, especially during sunset, is a highly recommended and unashamedly romantic experience. The wine list is "absolutely insane," with over 15,000 bottles available, often presented on an iPad. Complimentary à la carte breakfast is included in all rates, offering a creative menu that includes duck confit hash and even Japanese and Chinese breakfast spreads. For more casual options, the adjoining Bistro and Bar also offer terrace views and light meals.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Auberge du Soleil is consistently lauded as exceptional and a "masterclass." Guests frequently highlight the staff's fantastic, friendly, and attentive nature, noting their readiness to help without being overbearing. Staff members are often remembered by name and proactively assist with guest needs, such as booking wine tastings, managing scheduling changes, and even addressing personal emergencies like lost wallets or rings. This personalized and intuitive service significantly contributes to the overall excellent hospitality experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Auberge du Soleil is ideally situated in Rutherford, within the heart of Napa Valley, on a quiet 33-acre hillside olive grove. Its location provides stunning vineyard views and a secluded atmosphere, yet it remains central for easy access to nearby towns like Yountville and St. Helena (15-minute drive to Yountville, 10 minutes to St. Helena). Many of Napa Valley's finest wineries are on its doorstep, making it a prime location for wine tasting tours. While the area lacks extensive public transportation, the hotel offers accessible parking and provides accessible routes to its public facilities, including restaurants, fitness center, and pool. Guests are advised that driving is generally necessary to explore the wider region, though the hotel does offer complimentary use of a Mercedes-Benz fleet.

7. Value & Pricing

Auberge du Soleil is a high-end luxury property, and its pricing reflects the exclusive experience it offers. Guests typically expect to pay around $1,175.0 per night. While it requires "deep pockets," many guests consider it well worth the cost for the "spectacular" and "first-class" experience, often describing it as one of the best hospitality experiences they have ever had.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues have been mentioned:

  • Limited F&B Options: Some guests feel that the food and beverage options outside of the main restaurant are a bit limited.
  • Parking Visibility: From certain "valley view" rooms or suites, if standing, guests might also have a view of their car and the parking spaces in front of the unit.
  • Dry Cleaning Issues: One guest noted a slow return time for dry cleaning, although regular laundry and pressing were returned quickly.
  • Pool Service Hours: Occasionally, pool bar service has been noted to end a bit early, potentially depending on the time of year.
  • Foie Gras Controversy: In 2023, a lawsuit was filed alleging the restaurant served foie gras in violation of state law, though Auberge du Soleil reportedly agreed to stop its sale.

I'd always wanted to visit this resort, so when the opportunity presented itself, I was so excited. My husband and I drove up from East Bay and it was a lovely drive. We ate at the restaurant. We ordered drinks and tried the calamari. The service was great—very attentive wait staff. The only bummer was we hardly got to see any of the grounds. I understand keeping the guest areas private, but it wa...

This a review of the restaurant, we didn't stay at the hotel. Our evening was wonderful, the food was delicious and the service was perfect. The decor and vibe is comfortable and warm. After we were seated, Javier took care of us, then Tyler brought us some bites. Adrianna was our server and made some great suggestions. Alex picked some amazing wines for us and Jackson swung by to see how things ...

Forgot to leave a nice review earlier, but here I am. It was my fiancé’s idea to visit this property, and we didn’t regret coming to Auberge du Soleil. The facilities were top-notch, and the view and service were above most U.S. hotels I’ve been to. We had a great time at dinner and the scallops were amazing. I’m also glad the front desk lady (the one in the video on my review) helped me arrange a...

My wife and I had a phenomenal dinner here this week. The service and cuisine were top notch and lived up to the reputation that preceded them. We were assisted in our food and wine pairing by Jackson, and he did exceptionally well! Everything tasted so wonderfully together. This was a special dinner that will stay with us for quite some time. Thank you Auberge du Soleil!

The food was excellent but service was below average. We waited 10 mins to get an ice tea refill after having to flag down a waitress. After each entree, we waited a long time for our waitress to return to check on us. 30 minutes before I had to leave, I told my waitress and we had to wait another 15 minutes for our dessert. Thankfully the property was gorgeous and the food 5 star. I hope in t...

Drove up for Sunday brunch based on friends recommendations. Best meal of the trip. Best meal experience of my life, and I've had a few. I asked our waiter Caesar to recommend a wine for my meal selections and what he came up with was perfect. The staff was amazing, from the valet drop off to the valet pickup. Although the food is impeccable, how well you are treated brings the experience over th...
