Expert Review: Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge: An Extraordinary Wilderness Luxury Escape (Michelin Three-Key Property)
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, nestled on Vancouver Island, Canada, has earned an outstanding Three Michelin Keys, a prestigious honor signifying extraordinary luxury and world-class hospitality. This remote, all-inclusive "glamping" resort offers a unique blend of rugged adventure and opulent comfort, consistently leaving guests with a sense of awe and a profound connection to nature.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is overwhelmingly positive, described as an "extraordinary stay" and a "world-class" property. Guests frequently highlight it as a bucket-list, luxury experience that takes glamping to an entirely new level, far surpassing traditional camping. The lodge fosters a "convivial summer camp vibe" while still delivering quiet luxury, leading many to feel a sense of personal transformation and a deep reset from their usual routine.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge:
- Immersive Location: Situated within a UNESCO biosphere reserve at the end of a long fjord, the lodge offers unparalleled access to vast, untouched rainforests, mountains, and the Pacific Ocean. This secluded setting means guests can explore a part of Vancouver Island that would otherwise be nearly impossible to reach.
- Unlimited Adventure Activities: An extensive array of activities is included, such as horseback riding, canyon and waterfall jumping, paddling, whale watching, biking, and rainforest hiking. The lodge provides all necessary gear, from wetsuits to insulated exposure suits. More exclusive experiences like heli-hiking and glacial plunges are also available, sometimes at an extra cost.
- Gourmet Dining: The culinary experience is consistently lauded as exceptional, worthy of high-end gourmet restaurants, even for an inclusive lodge.
- Exceptional Service & Staff: The staff-to-guest ratio is high, ensuring personalized and attentive service. Guests describe the staff as welcoming, friendly, and authentic, creating a feeling of hiking with friends rather than employees.
- Sustainable Practices: The lodge demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable tourism, operating off-grid, sourcing local and organic food, avoiding single-use plastics, and engaging in environmental research and conservation projects.
3. Room Quality
The accommodations at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge are luxurious canvas "tents" that share little with conventional camping. These spacious tents are furnished with plush, comfortable beds, couches, tables, and ample lighting. Amenities include freestanding gas stoves for warmth, cedar plank floors, and in some, heated floors. Many tents boast large decks overlooking a small river, offering opportunities for wildlife sightings. "Ensuite" tents feature attached bathrooms, while "deluxe" categories may have detached facilities. Outdoor cedar-planked showers with excellent pressure are also a highlight. Morning coffee is delivered in a thermos outside the tent door. A strict no-food-in-the-tent rule is in place to deter wildlife, and tents are equipped with bear alarms.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is a gourmet affair, with chefs sourcing ingredients whenever possible from British Columbia and local merchants. The main restaurant, The Cookhouse, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with inspired daily changing menus prepared over an open fire. Reviewers describe the food as some of the best they've experienced at any lodge. Dinner highlights include family-style meals with multiple appetizers, main dishes, sides, and creative desserts like frozen s'mores. Wine pairings are recommended and enhance the meals, and the cocktail menu features creative concoctions using foraged ingredients. While breakfast is gourmet, some guests have noted the absence of in-room coffee makers, a practical decision to avoid attracting wildlife.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is consistently praised as outstanding. The high staff-to-guest ratio (reportedly 70 staff to 50 guests) allows for highly personalized experiences. Guests frequently comment on the staff's welcoming, friendly, and authentic demeanor, which contributes to a relaxed and communal atmosphere. Guides are knowledgeable and accommodating, even creating custom activity plans. The general manager, Sarah Cruse, personally hires every staff member, emphasizing "heart-forward service," and guests often feel a significant positive change in themselves after interacting with the team and the environment.
6. Location & Accessibility
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is situated in a spectacularly remote area of Vancouver Island, on the Bedwell Sound inlet, within the UNESCO-designated Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve. This 600-acre property is inaccessible by road, requiring transfers by seaplane from Vancouver (approximately 45 minutes) or boat from Tofino (approximately 35 minutes). Upon arrival, guests are often transported to the lodge by horse-drawn carriage, setting a unique tone for their stay. The remoteness is a key part of its appeal, offering exclusive access to vast wilderness for exploration and wildlife viewing, including bears, eagles, whales, sea otters, and sea lions.
7. Value & Pricing
A stay at Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is a significant investment, reflecting its extraordinary luxury, all-inclusive nature, and remote location. All-inclusive stays start at approximately CAD $2,900 per person, per night, with a minimum stay of three nights. With taxes and fees, a three-night trip for two can total around CAD $11,600. The price covers luxury tented accommodation, all gourmet dining, a premium selection of wines, beers, and spirits, non-alcoholic beverages, guided signature, special interest, and wellness experiences, and use of lodge facilities. The high cost is attributed to factors such as ownership by a luxury hotel group (Baillie Lodges), the logistical challenges and expense of transporting everything to a road-inaccessible location, the quality of food and staff (including staff lodging and meals), and the lodge's commitment to sustainable tourism. Despite the high price tag, many guests consider it a worthwhile "enormous price tag" for an unforgettable, world-class experience.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are largely glowing, a few minor criticisms have been noted in older reviews:
- Packed Lunches: One older review mentioned a disappointing packed lunch experience, where the food quality and presentation were poor.
- Initial Arrival Experience: Another reviewer from 2018 felt the initial group arrival process felt more like "summer camp" due to waiting for other guests and a less-than-luxurious setup for lunch.
- Internet Connectivity: While Wi-Fi is available in individual cabins, there is no public Wi-Fi, which some guests initially worried about, though many found it ultimately led to a welcome disconnection from technology. One older review noted "mind numbing, cripplingly slow Internet."
- Privacy in Tents: Due to the nature of tented accommodations, one older review suggested that neighbors could be heard, impacting privacy.
Overall, more recent reviews tend to focus on the overwhelmingly positive aspects, suggesting that many of these minor issues may have been addressed or are overshadowed by the exceptional natural environment and service.

The most wonderful personalised stay, everything about this lodge brought a smile to our faces. You are greeted from the seaplane by welcoming faces and their two dogs then whisked to the lodge and handed sparkling wine whilst being orientated.
