Expert Review: Chablé Maroma

Chablé Maroma, nestled along the serene coastline of Punta Maroma in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, is a distinguished Michelin Key One-Keys property that consistently earns high praise for its ability to deliver a luxurious, tranquil, and deeply personalized experience. Guests frequently describe it as a retreat that "ruins other hotels" due to its exceptional service and amenities.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Chablé Maroma is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently rating it as "wonderful." It is lauded as a sophisticated, eco-conscious retreat that masterfully balances luxury with simplicity, offering a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. The resort achieves a remarkable 9.1 rating from verified Michelin Guide guests, with particularly high scores for staff (9.7), cleanliness (9.6), and comfort (9.6).

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Chablé Maroma:

  • Service & Staff: The attentive, friendly, and efficient staff are a recurring highlight, with many guests praising their ability to anticipate needs and provide personalized service.
  • Design & Ambiance: The resort's design seamlessly blends handmade artisanal charm with modern luxury, featuring traditional stone and wood construction. The open-air lobby with its soaring thatched roof and lush foliage immediately sets a tone of peace and serenity.
  • Spa & Wellness: The spa is considered a headline act, offering a spiritual journey with treatments inspired by ancient Mayan rituals. Daily activities like yoga classes are also available, and access to the hydrotherapy circuit is often included.
  • Location & Beach: Its coveted beachside perch on Punta Maroma offers a private, expansive (650-foot) stretch of soft, clean sand and calm waters. The secluded nature of the property makes guests feel like they are on a remote island.
  • Attention to Detail: Small, thoughtful touches like a daily "eye-opener" — a picnic basket with coffee, pastries, and a personalized itinerary delivered to the villa each morning — greatly enhance the guest experience.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Chablé Maroma are referred to as villas, each featuring a private plunge pool and a well-appointed outdoor living space. Rooms are described as fantastic, very clean, and well-kept, offering a spacious and comfortable environment. The design emphasizes clean, modern comfort with warm, rich wood tones and bright white linens. Villas include a large bedroom area with a supremely comfortable king-size bed, a seating/small lounge area, a huge TV, and a complimentary minibar. Bathrooms are notably massive, often featuring twin sinks, a large vanity, and both indoor and outdoor showers, sometimes even a reclining sofa. The jungle canopies around each casita provide a decent level of privacy.

4. Dining Experience

Chablé Maroma offers an excellent culinary experience, guided by acclaimed chefs like Jorge Vallejo (of Mexico City's Quintonil) and Resident Chef Carlos Navarrete. The philosophy centers on fresh, locally sourced, and organic ingredients, honoring the rich culinary heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula.

  • Bu'ul: This is the innovative fine-dining restaurant, housed under a thatched roof with a sea-view terrace. It features refined regional favorites and an extensive wine cellar.
  • Kaban: A more relaxed, all-day dining option, Kaban serves seafood and traditional Mexican fare for lunch and dinner. Breakfast, which is à la carte and impressive in selection and quality, is also served here. Guests particularly recommend the chilaquiles and tacos.
  • Raw Bar: Open in the evenings, the Raw Bar offers small plates of seafood delicacies, along with high-quality mezcal and tequila cocktails, making it an ideal spot for sunset views.
  • Breakfast: Daily à la carte breakfast is typically included in the stay. The "eye-opener" basket delivered to the room is also a cherished part of the morning ritual.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Chablé Maroma is consistently highlighted as exceptional. Staff are described as wonderfully friendly, attentive, efficient, and proactive, embodying the "true essence of hospitality." Many guests note the personalized attention, with staff often knowing their names. From concierge services to waiters by the pool and beach, the team is dedicated to ensuring a relaxing and pampered stay.

6. Location & Accessibility

Chablé Maroma is situated in the Reserve of Punta Maroma, a secluded and untouched area along the Riviera Maya, approximately 12 miles north of Playa del Carmen. This location offers a sense of being "worlds away from the hustle and bustle" of busier tourist areas. It's about a 35-minute drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN), with private transfers easily arranged. While discreetly tucked away, the hotel's private beach provides views of the world's second-largest reef. For those looking to explore, trendy Tulum is about a 90-minute drive away. The ground floor of the hotel and casitas are designed to be wheelchair accessible, with staff ready to assist.

7. Value & Pricing

Chablé Maroma is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects that. A night in a villa with a private plunge pool can start around $990, including breakfast and taxes. Average prices can range from approximately $1,043 on a weeknight to $1,150 on a weekend night, although deals can sometimes be found from around $614. While a significant investment, guests often feel the unparalleled experience, exceptional service, and luxurious amenities make it well worth the cost.

8. Common Complaints

While overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, some minor issues have been noted:

  • Check-in Experience: A few guests have reported that the check-in process, similar to its sister property Chablé Yucatán, can be a less seamless experience.
  • Room Allocation/Privacy: One review mentioned initial disappointment with a "serenity villa" being dark and close to paths, leading to a "downgrade" to an upper-level villa king for better views and brightness. The villas, while private due to foliage, are not as spaced out as some might expect compared to other Chablé properties.
  • Choppy Water Conditions: While the private beach is beautiful, sometimes choppy water conditions might prevent guests from being able to swim in the sea.
  • Raccoons: Guests are advised not to leave food out due to raccoons attempting to steal it.
  • Kids' Club: There isn't a dedicated kids' club, although the hotel does offer family-friendly activities like cooking classes. The resort is often recommended for couples or those seeking a quiet escape.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled after my wife (40) suffered serious illness requiring hospitalization. While a stomach flu can happen anywhere only me and my ended up ill. Our daughter 13 was fine. Our daughter doesn’t eat seafood and this was the only food my wife and I shared alone. Well that and cocktails. We highly suspect the seafood was the culprit. The property is nice but it’s...

We stayed at this resort with a group of friends for a 40th birthday trip. The communal spaces are stunning - pool, bars etc… and the food is exceptional. Also highly recommend the spa - one of the best massages I’ve had! Truly a fantastic stay

Such a great stay! Beyond amazing food from breakfast to pool dining to dinner, fantastic accommodations (loved the outdoor shower), peaceful surroundings and wonderful service. Pablo, Adriana, Simon, Manuel, Fernando, and more all took great care of us during our stay. It was so relaxing - we will definitely be back!

Was going to this beautiful resort for a wedding. The road going to the resort is so rough it is crazy. During our family vacation one of us fell down the very wet cement stairs from the rain. There are no railings at all. This was in day 2 of 4 so you can imagine how much fun was had by all. The resort helped us get medical care and paid for that but that is where the support ended. The person wh...

Entire experience was fantastic. Stayed for 4 Nights, 5 days. Food was great, cocktails were wonderful, and the service was very kind. Perfect for couples looking to disconnect and not too much razzle dazzle during their stay. You’re there to relax, eat, and do nothing else. Truly wonderful.

Lovely hotel but they failed to release back the $500 deposit, we tried to communicate with them for 5 months and they never responded. This hotel is a scam.
