Casa Pestagua in Cartagena, Colombia, a distinguished Relais & Châteaux property and recipient of Two Michelin Keys in 2025, consistently earns high praise for its blend of historic grandeur and luxurious modern comfort. Housed in an impressive 18th-century aristocratic mansion, often referred to as the most beautiful house in Cartagena, the hotel offers an exceptional and intimate experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Casa Pestagua is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional," "stunning," and "top-notch." It boasts an impressive overall rating of 9.4 on Agoda and strong scores on Booking.com, including 9.9 for location and cleanliness, and 9.7 for staff and facilities. 2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Casa Pestagua:
- Service & Staff: The staff is frequently highlighted as phenomenal, exceptionally attentive, warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful in arranging everything from tours to dinner reservations.
- Location: Its prime location in the heart of Cartagena's historic walled city, just 98 feet from Santo Domingo Square, means guests are steps away from major attractions, restaurants, and shops.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's design, preserving its original colonial architecture with Moorish-inspired arches, double-height ceilings, and an opulent central courtyard with a serene pool, creates a luxurious and romantic oasis. A recent $15-million renovation in 2022 further enhanced its appeal, blending historic charm with contemporary amenities.
- Amenities: Standout amenities include an inviting outdoor pool, a rooftop hydromassage tub offering remarkable city views, a well-equipped gym, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property. The hotel also provides access to a private beach on Barú Island, a 45-minute boat ride away, offering a tranquil escape.
3. Room Quality
Casa Pestagua offers 16 distinctive accommodations, including 11 spacious suites and 5 harmonious rooms, each unique in shape and size. The rooms blend colonial heritage with contemporary Colombian design, featuring antique and custom-made furniture, colorful textiles, and local art. Guests can expect high ceilings, comfortable king-size beds with luxurious linens, and modern comforts like air conditioning, smart TVs, Bose radios, Nespresso machines, and minibars. Bathrooms are generously proportioned with oversized open showers, ample counter space, and premium toiletries from brands like L'Occitane or Ortigia Sicilia. Some recently refurbished rooms include modern upgrades such as sound-proof windows and Japanese-style toilets.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's AniMare Restaurant, situated in the central courtyard under colonial arches, offers a sophisticated dining experience. Chef Heberto Eljach's menu masterfully combines fresh Caribbean cuisine, particularly seafood, with international and traditional Colombian dishes, focusing on ancient techniques and local, organic products.
Breakfast, which is à la carte and included in the stay, is consistently praised as excellent, rich, and wonderfully presented, featuring a wide array of options from fresh fruits, breads, and croissants to delicious omelets, arepas, green juice, acai bowls, and yogurt parfaits. The hotel also features a contemporary jazz bar serving classic cocktails and a petite menu of snacks. In-room dining is available daily from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Casa Pestagua is a standout feature, frequently described as excellent and highly attentive. The presence of English-speaking staff is also a noted advantage.
6. Location & Accessibility
Casa Pestagua enjoys an unrivaled location within the historic walled city of Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is centrally located, offering easy walking access to major sights, vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and shops. Rafael Núñez Cartagena International Airport is approximately 3.4 miles away. However, guests with limited mobility should be aware that the cobblestone streets of the Old City can be challenging, and the historic nature of the hotel means it is not fully adapted for wheelchair users.

While Casa Pestagua is a luxury property, guests often consider it to offer "exceptional value" for the discerning traveler. Room rates typically average around $416, significantly higher than the city's average of $194, with nightly rates for two adults starting from approximately $510.0. However, deals can sometimes be found, with rates as low as $344. Pricing fluctuates seasonally, with December being the most expensive month and September generally offering the cheapest rates.

- Vegetarian options on the restaurant menu might be perceived as limited by some guests.
- High season, particularly around New Year's, sees significantly increased room rates.

Found the hotel on our last day and had a fantastic Sangria near the pool. Service was impeccable with a special shout out for Carlos who looked after us. Also the guy who made the drinks (sorry, can't remember his name) gave us a detailed run down of the ingredients. Nice touch. Unfortunately we were not staying, but had I know before, we definitely would have.

Casa Pestagua is pure magic. The service is heartfelt and impeccable, making you feel truly cared for from the moment you arrive. The property blends luxury with an authentic local spirit, creating an experience that feels both intimate and uniquely Cartagena. A stay full of charm, comfort, and genuine hospitality. Absolutely deserving of five stars.

Casa Pestagua makes you feel at home and goes to great lengths to make sure you are comfortable. Scratching your leg at breakfast? There will be a bottle of bug spray at your table before you can say "mosquito". Come back after a day out sweating in the heat? Cold towel and a bottle of cold water will be within arm's length. There were a couple of incredibly minor issues we encountered during ou...

A wonderful place with amazing staff! Personalized service, personalized kitchen, cozy rooms, and a perfect location make it a great stay. Just a small note — if you're not a fan of Spanish music and staying on the 1st floor, be aware that live concerts last until 22:30 :)
