Awasi Atacama: An Exceptional Desert Oasis with Unparalleled Personalized Luxury

Awasi Atacama, a distinguished Michelin Two-Key property in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, consistently earns rave reviews for its deeply personalized approach to luxury, seamless integration with the breathtaking desert landscape, and outstanding service. Guests frequently describe their stay as an unforgettable, bespoke adventure.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Awasi Atacama is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an "exceptional stay" and a "special desert hideaway." Guests are particularly moved by the entire experience, from the stunning landscape to the attentive staff. The hotel consistently receives high ratings, with one source noting a 4.9/5 based on 853 reviews.

2. Key Highlights

Awasi Atacama's allure lies in its dedication to a tailor-made experience. Key highlights include:

  • Personalized Excursions & Private Guides: Each guest room is assigned a private guide and a 4x4 vehicle, allowing for completely customized excursions that adapt to individual preferences, interests, and pace. This enables guests to explore the Atacama Desert's wonders, such as the Valle de la Luna, El Tatio Geysers, salt flats, and stargazing, at their leisure.
  • Impeccable Service & Attention to Detail: The staff's foresight and genuine warmth are frequently lauded. They anticipate needs, remember guest preferences (like dietary requirements or coffee orders), and handle requests with a relaxed and friendly attitude, making the stay feel completely carefree.
  • Harmonious Design & Ambiance: The hotel's design, inspired by Andean heritage, blends rustic elegance with local materials like adobe, stone, and wood, creating an intimate and authentic "safari camp" feel.
  • All-Inclusive Luxury: The all-inclusive program covers not only exquisite meals and a wide selection of drinks (including Chilean wines and cocktails) but also private transfers from Calama airport and daily bespoke excursions.

3. Room Quality

Awasi Atacama offers a limited number of private suites (ten private suites and two round rooms, totaling 12 accommodations) that feel more like secluded desert hideaways than traditional hotel rooms.

  • Design & Comfort: The circular rooms, some measuring 50-70 sqm, feature rustic elegance with local wood, stone, and woven textiles. Furnishings are opulent and comfortable, including plush armchairs. Rooms boast heated floors and humidifiers to combat the desert's cold and dry nights, along with thoughtful details like alpaca blankets, a torch, and walking sticks.
  • Amenities: Each suite typically includes a private patio, often with an outdoor rain shower, a large en-suite bathroom with bath salts and premium toiletries (like L'Occitane), a walk-in wardrobe, and a workstation. Some suites are designed with adjoining rooms for families.

4. Dining Experience

The dining at Awasi Atacama is a highlight, described as "exquisite" and "formidable fine-dining."

  • Cuisine & Ingredients: Under the guidance of Chef Sebastián Prieto (formerly Juan Pablo Mardones), the restaurant offers a sophisticated menu that changes daily. It celebrates the richness of local gastronomy, fusing Altiplano and international flavors using indigenous ingredients such as purple potatoes, quinoa, chañar fruit, and algarrobo.
  • Personalization: Meals are conceived to suit individual taste preferences and dietary requirements, with the team going above and beyond to cater to specific needs, such as plant-based diets or gluten-free options.
  • Setting & Offerings: Guests dine in an open-air courtyard, creating a romantic atmosphere with fireplaces and candles in the evenings. Breakfast includes fresh juices, pastries, breads, fruit, and hot dishes. Picnic lunches are often provided during excursions, sometimes in breathtaking locations like the El Tatio geyser field. Cooking classes with the chef are also available.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Awasi Atacama are consistently praised as outstanding.

  • Attentive & Proactive: Guests report a high level of care and attention, where staff anticipate needs and make every request feel effortless. They remember guests' names and preferences, creating a feeling of being at home.
  • Knowledgeable Guides: The private guides are multilingual and highly knowledgeable in history, flora, fauna, and astronomy, enhancing the excursion experience significantly. They also assist with practicalities like cleaning hiking boots.
  • Relaxed Hospitality: Despite the high level of service, the staff maintains a relaxed and friendly demeanor, contributing to a special and carefree atmosphere.

6. Location & Accessibility

Awasi Atacama is situated in San Pedro de Atacama, acting as a tranquil oasis within the heart of the world's driest desert.

  • Proximity to Town: The hotel is hidden behind high trees and adobe walls but is a short walk from San Pedro's historic central plaza, allowing guests to experience authentic town life while enjoying privacy.
  • Desert Attractions: Its prime location provides easy access to the numerous volcanoes, colorful lagoons, salt lakes, and other natural wonders of the Atacama Desert. Private 4x4 vehicles ensure accessibility to places not easily reached.
  • Transportation: Private transfers from and to Calama (CJC) airport (approximately a 90-minute drive) are included in the rates. The hotel is also a gateway for land travel to neighboring Argentina and Bolivia. Guests should be mindful of the altitude (San Pedro is around 2,500 meters above sea level) and acclimatize accordingly, with guides planning excursions to mitigate altitude sickness.

7. Value & Pricing

Awasi Atacama operates on an all-inclusive model, which includes accommodation, all meals and beverages (including alcoholic options), private transfers, and personalized excursions with a private guide and 4x4 vehicle.

  • Pricing: While specific current prices vary, rates are significant, with mentions of starting around US$2250 - US$2251 per night.
  • Value: Guests generally consider it worth the cost due to the unparalleled level of personalized service, bespoke experiences, exclusive private guiding, and the comprehensive all-inclusive nature of the stay. The seamless, carefree experience where every detail is managed is a significant part of its value proposition. A minimum stay of 3 nights is typically required.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points have been noted by some guests:

  • WiFi and Cell Reception: The hotel's satellite WiFi can be slow, and cell reception can be spotty, leading to guests being "a little off-the-grid." This could be a minor inconvenience for those needing constant connectivity, though it might be seen as part of the appeal of a desert retreat.
  • Accessibility in Rooms: One review mentioned that some rooms are "not particularly accessible," although this was presented as a minor oversight rather than a significant issue.
  • Suite Outfitting (Relative): While luxurious, some reviewers noted that the suites, due to their authentic, rustic design, might not be considered the "most lavishly outfitted" compared to newer, more modernist luxury hotels, though their homely quality is appreciated.

Our stay at Awasi Atacama was outstanding from start to finish. This is not a place trying to impress you with shine or excess. The luxury here is restraint, privacy, and how thoughtfully everything is integrated into the desert. The villas are quiet, secluded, and beautifully suited to the Atacama environment. Nothing feels performative. It feels calm, grounded, and intentional. The setting is ...

As a person who travels a lot, and has had the opportunity to seize many great hotels in Europe, Africa, South and North America I find myself not really used of writing reviews about them. But Awasi Atacama has stand out amongst all. The Relajs Chateaux and 2 Michelin Keys classification are the pure reflection of the outstanding quality of the Awasi group. I could write up to 10 pages of simpl...

This is one of the best place and experiences we had in life. Food, hotel, and tours were amazing. The rooms are old fashioned but that’s exactly the idea of the place. Rooms are big!! We stayed in the winter and weather...

The reason I have given them a 5 star rating is that the service was unbelievably good. We had a group buy out however the intimacy of the staff and attention to detail was incredible. It felt like a home. My biggest complaint is that the property is tired. The rooms a very old fashioned. To some this might lend some charm but when you step into the pool and the lining comes up and floats, you hav...
