Expert Review: Cirqa
Cirqa, a distinguished Relais & Châteaux property in the historic heart of Arequipa, Peru, consistently garners high praise, earning its Michelin Two-Key recognition as an exceptional stay. This boutique hotel, housed within a meticulously restored 16th-century former monastery, masterfully blends its rich history with contemporary luxury, offering guests a truly unique and memorable experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Cirqa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "exceptional" and "magical." Review scores are consistently high, with one platform showing an impressive 9.7 out of 10 based on guest feedback. The sentiment is one of awe and deep satisfaction, highlighting its luxury, unique character, and outstanding service.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly captivated by the hotel's stunning architecture, which showcases original sillar volcanic rock walls (Arequipa's signature white stone) harmoniously integrated with modern design elements like glass and steel. The serene and calm ambiance, despite its central location, is a major draw. Impeccable service, unique amenities such as a heated plunge pool, a massage room, and a delightful rooftop terrace offering spectacular views of Arequipa's surrounding volcanoes, are frequently cited as key highlights.
3. Room Quality
Cirqa features a limited number of rooms (11 to 18, depending on the source), each boasting its own distinct character due to the building's monastic origins. Rooms are described as luxurious, clean, quiet, and comfortable, with some featuring magnificent high-vaulted ceilings. The design seamlessly marries colonial aesthetics with modern comforts, including sculptural wooden furnishings, neutral decor, air-conditioning, wireless speakers, Smart TVs with DirecTV and Netflix, organic amenities, bathrobes, and complimentary snacks and drinks hampers. While most rooms are atmospheric and well-appointed, some smaller rooms, particularly those in the "Claustro" category, might lack traditional outdoor windows (having only a windowed entrance door), which could feel less spacious for guests intending to spend significant time indoors.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant, "Salón," led by executive chef María Fé García Uranga, offers a "reliably good cuisine" with an innovative reinterpretation of traditional Arequipenean flavors and iconic picanterías. Meals, including breakfast and dinner, are consistently praised as delicious. Many guests appreciate that the dining room, patio, and rooftop deck provide wonderful options for food and drinks, and that the dining experience is often exclusive to hotel guests, enhancing the intimate atmosphere. Afternoon teatime, often included in the room rates, is also highlighted as a substantial and enjoyable offering on the rooftop terrace.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Cirqa is frequently lauded as "phenomenal" and "impeccable." Guests report that the staff are "amazing," "attentive," "helpful," and go "above and beyond" to ensure a special stay, often making them "feel like family." Personalized touches like in-room check-in and efficient communication via WhatsApp for requests are highly appreciated. Concierge and tour desk services are also available to arrange excursions.
6. Location & Accessibility
Cirqa boasts an "amazing" and "perfect location" in the historic center of Arequipa. It is situated just one block (approximately 300 meters) from the Arequipa Main Square (Plaza de Armas), making it ideal for exploring key attractions. Popular sites like the Santa Catalina Monastery, Santa Teresa Convent, Goyeneche Palace, and Compania de Jesus Church are all within easy walking distance. Rodríguez Ballón International Airport is located approximately 7 km away.
7. Value & Pricing
As a luxury Relais & Châteaux property with Michelin Two-Keys, Cirqa commands premium pricing. While specific rates vary, published prices for a double room can range from approximately $457 to $974 per night. However, guests generally consider the experience to be "worth every penny" and offering "unbeatable value" for the unparalleled luxury and service provided. Rates often include breakfast, afternoon tea, and one additional meal (lunch or dinner), along with a mandatory 10% service charge.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of criticism have been noted. The primary recurring issue is that some of the hotel's rooms are smaller and may lack outdoor windows, relying instead on a windowed entrance door. This design choice, while authentic to its monastery origins and effective for climate control, could feel "claustrophobic" for guests who prefer more natural light or plan to spend extended periods in their room. Additionally, some reviews mention that the hotel offers limited facilities, featuring a small heated plunge pool and a massage room rather than a full-service spa. Generic labeling of toiletries without ingredient lists has also been observed.

Having stayed at a lot of cool hotels it takes a lot to 'wow' me and this hotel in Arequipa really did. The sillar stone architecture is like nothing I have ever seen, and the staff are so kind and helpful: nothing is too much trouble for them. It almost makes a girl feel like royalty. ---My heartfelt thank you.

Get thee to a nunnery. (Hamlet Act 3 Scene 1). This former convent is no ordinary hotel and you have to accept that. Some of the starkness of a convent remains with thick volcanic stone walls and no outside windows apart from a small skylight in the bedroom which they cover and uncover at pre-arranged times, although they seemed to have forgotten on our second day. The toilet and shower room was...

I stayed three nights in the Christmas time, the rooms are amazing, the location super central, everything is done with love to detail. The fire in the backyard where you can your dinner or apéro, the fireplace in the dining room with seating at long tables or lounge corners, the unexpected Christmas present.
