Expert Review: Bay of Many Coves

Bay of Many Coves, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property nestled in the breathtaking Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand, offers an exclusive luxury retreat celebrated for its stunning natural setting, exceptional service, and tranquil atmosphere.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Bay of Many Coves is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "amazing," "spectacular," and "the best place we have ever been to." It's widely regarded as an "absolute gem" and a "luxury five-star resort" that provides an unforgettable experience. Booking.com rates the property at an "Excellent" 8.7 out of 10 based on 19 reviews, with high scores particularly for staff and location. While some isolated feedback mentions a perceived lack of value for money or basic aspects, the overriding sentiment is one of indulgence, relaxation, and awe for the natural surroundings.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of Bay of Many Coves:

  • Location & Scenery: The resort's secluded position in the heart of Queen Charlotte Sound, surrounded by native bush and overlooking a private bay, is a major draw. The "incredible location with unreal views and surrounding scenery" offers unparalleled peace and beauty.
  • Service & Hospitality: The staff are frequently lauded for going "above and beyond," being "friendly," "attentive," and "super friendly and responsive." Their dedication to guest experience, including assisting with transport and dietary needs, is a recurring highlight.
  • Activities & Amenities: The property provides a serene yet adventurous escape. Guests love the readily available kayaks and paddleboards, the network of private walking trails (some linking to the Queen Charlotte Track), and the opportunities for bird watching and spotting marine wildlife like dolphins and fur seals. The outdoor pool, cedar hot tub, and Miritu Day Spa offer relaxation. Thoughtful inclusions such as complimentary coffee beans, binoculars, and flashlights enhance the stay.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Bay of Many Coves are primarily luxurious apartments (one, two, and three-bedroom options), described as "superb," "spotlessly clean and stylish," and "very comfortable and private." Each apartment is designed to be a modern dwelling "dropped into nature," featuring spacious living rooms with comfortable sofas and Sky TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a private balcony that offers stunning views of the bay. Some apartments also come with kitchenettes and dishwashers, providing a home-away-from-home feel. Guests generally find the rooms "surprisingly quiet" and well-appointed. However, one guest mentioned that outdoor furniture was not particularly comfortable and noted the absence of screens on doors or windows, which could lead to issues with biting insects.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at Bay of Many Coves is generally considered a highlight, with food often described as "amazing," "outstanding," "delicious," and "world-class cuisine." The resort features the fine-dining Foredeck Restaurant, offering an à la carte menu and a memorable degustation dinner with expert wine matching. The Kumatage Restaurant and the casual Bight Cafe on the jetty also provide diverse options. Breakfast receives high praise, with offerings like French toast with Greek yogurt and berries being particularly popular. Despite the overall positive feedback, some guests have experienced inconsistencies, with reports of the food being "surprisingly hit and miss" and the 5-course degustation sometimes "disappointing." There have also been instances of staff needing more training to handle dietary restrictions effectively and some delays in service. One review mentioned dinner portions could be light.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Bay of Many Coves consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests frequently highlight the team's exceptional friendliness, attentiveness, and willingness to go "above and beyond." Staff members are commended for being "super friendly and responsive," assisting with pre-arrival arrangements like water taxi service, and meticulously noting dietary restrictions. Specific individuals, including the chef, waitstaff, and general manager, have been singled out for their outstanding hospitality. Even in instances where dining experiences had minor flaws, guests emphasized that the staff were "absolutely lovely" and clearly "trying their absolute best."

6. Location & Accessibility

Bay of Many Coves is truly a secluded retreat, located in the eco-marine haven of Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough, "way off the beaten track." This isolated setting contributes significantly to its tranquil and peaceful ambiance. Access to the resort is an experience in itself, primarily by a 30-minute water taxi from Picton, with fares starting around $48 per adult. For those seeking a more direct route, a 20-minute helicopter flight from Wellington is also an option. The remote nature means that a "must love nature" criterion is essential for prospective guests, as the resort is deeply integrated into its environment, offering numerous on-site activities and easy access to hiking trails and water-based exploration.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury five-star resort and a Michelin Key One-Key property, Bay of Many Coves operates at a premium price point. While some guests consider it "fantastic value" for the unique experience, others, including a Booking.com rating of 6.5/10 for value for money, suggest mixed perceptions. Average prices per room can be around $837, though official resort pricing for high season (October to April) ranges from approximately $1665.00 to $7350.00 per night, and low season (May to September) from $1090.00 to $3725.00 per night, with rates applied per apartment. These rates often include the room and likely some services but specific meal inclusions vary, with breakfast available for an additional fee of approximately NZD 55 for adults. One reviewer explicitly stated that it "certainly did not have value for money" based on their experience.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Dining Inconsistencies: Despite generally high praise, some guests found the food quality to be "hit and miss," particularly with the 5-course degustation menu, and noted instances of staff training deficiencies in managing dietary requirements or service timing.
  • Basic Room Aspects: One guest described accommodations as "pretty basic" for the price point, particularly noting uncomfortable outdoor furniture and the lack of screens on doors/windows, which could lead to mosquito bites.
  • Pool Size/Usage: The communal pool was sometimes perceived as more of a "paddling pool for children" and was often occupied by families, which disappointed guests hoping for a more serene adult swimming experience.
  • Accessibility Challenges: While part of its charm, the remote location means guests are reliant on water taxis or helicopters, which adds to travel time and cost, and might not suit everyone.

I went half way around the world to celebrate a special birthday. Reaching the 7th floor with my wife and 27 yr old daughter and boyfriend ~I was looking to splurge a little and boy did we hit a bullseye! From the onset, we were treated like royalty, but not too much very relaxed. The accommodations were perfect two bedrooms and a nice living area and deck overlooking our beautiful cove. They have...

We went to Bay of Many Coves for a three-course lunch. The food was lovely, but the service wasn’t great, which was disappointing. There were no other guests in the restaurant, so there was really no reason for the poor service—especially given that we paid top dollar for both the food and wine. As locals to the Marlborough Sounds, and having stayed at the resort ourselves many years ago, we were ...

We came for a winter break in September. We adored the resort in every way. The food was amazing and views from our room breathtaking. We loved the native trees and bird life immediately surrounding the resort and enjoyed the walking/hiking and Eko tour. It’s a blissful time of year to travel and stay at Bay of Many Coves. We were looked after superbly!

We stayed at this beautiful location with a fantastic view from our apartment. We arrived here by water taxi and sailed for about an hour from Picton. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member, shown around, and given our apartment. We thought the apartment was nicely decorated, but the entire resort is starting to need maintenance. It’s in no way a 5-star experience. The food at their eve...

This is a very special place. The long water taxi ride from Picton changes the channel effectively - you disembark into a small, remote outpost of civilization not reachable by road, and far from ordinary life. Very comfortable apartments, good resort dining, with hiking and kayaking available if you're motivated. Totally unpretentious - the best sort of rustic wilderness luxury.
