It is widely considered a top-tier luxury lodge, offering a secluded and peaceful escape that many guests wish to revisit. The general sentiment is one of profound relaxation and indulgence, where every detail is managed with care.
2. Key Highlights
The lodge's most cherished aspects revolve around its stunning location, providing panoramic lake and mountain views from almost every vantage point. Guests adore the tranquility and seclusion of the private peninsula. Service and food are consistently highlighted as outstanding, contributing significantly to the luxurious experience. Amenities such as the elegant lounge with its panoramic vistas, complimentary mini-bar, and pre-dinner drinks and canapés are also frequently mentioned as key differentiators. Furthermore, the emphasis on outdoor activities directly accessible from the lodge, like fishing, kayaking, and guided walks to waterfalls and hot springs, adds immense value for guests seeking both relaxation and adventure.
3. Room Quality
The nine suites at Solitaire Lodge are elegantly appointed and designed for absolute comfort. Each suite boasts panoramic lake views from private decks, bedrooms, or lounges. A notable feature is the luxurious freestanding baths, with some positioned to allow guests to soak while enjoying the stunning Lake Tarawera views. Rooms are well-appointed with king beds, premium bedding, air conditioning, free stocked mini-bars, and plush bathrobes. While one guest noted the rooms as "comfortable but nothing special" in terms of decor, they are generally described as thoroughly luxurious and spacious with large bathrooms.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Solitaire Lodge is consistently cited as a major highlight. The lodge operates on a full board tariff, which includes a daily changing five-course evening meal, a full country breakfast, and a light lunch. The talented chefs pride themselves on creating contemporary New Zealand cuisine using fresh local ingredients, including herbs from the lodge's own garden. An extensive collection of fine New Zealand wines complements the meals. Guests can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and canapés from 7 pm. Dietary preferences are well-catered for, with options like halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free available. 8. Common Complaints
Recurring issues or criticisms are infrequent. One guest noted that the rooms, while comfortable, were "nothing special" in terms of decor, despite being thoroughly luxurious. Another point raised is its secluded nature means it is "far from everything," incurring costly taxi rides (NZD 80-90 one way) to Rotorua, though this seclusion is also a key selling point for many. While free Wi-Fi is available, one review mentioned it was "not fast".

Stayed here for part of my honeymoon and I cannot say enough good things! The staff was INCREDIBLE (shout out to Donna!), the views were remarkable, the room was lovely, and the food was the best I had during my entire trip. Would absolutely come back in a heartbeat!

Wayne and his staff (Orlando is awesome) are excellent. Our rooms were spacious with excellent views. The food is superb. They really do their best to coordinate your plans and they have wonderful recommendations. It is a little bit of a very winding drive from Rotorua but well worth it.

What can I say except “wow”! My wife and I spent a few days of our honeymoon at Solitaire Lodge and it has so far been the highlight of our trip. Solitaire combines the charm of a mom-and-pop bed and breakfast with the refinement of a super luxury hotel. Every member of staff has been warm, welcoming, and exceedingly helpful from Wayne and Ingrid who helped us schedule our daily activities to Jack...

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Wayne, Ingrid and team provided the most amazing, caring and thoughtful service through out our stay - we have never been so well looked after in our lives! Food and drinks were amazing - the set evening menu was phenomenal. Accommodation is extremely clean, comfortable and silent, we especially enjoyed watching the native birds outside our rooms windo...

Thank you Wayne and your amazing staff for such a wonderful, albeit short stay. Nothing was too much trouble. We will stay longer next time. From the minute we arrived service was warm and personal. The views were amazing and the thermal hot springs a definite highlight. Captain Dave very informative on the area. The accommodation was fantastic, with attention to little details. The food and wine ...

Rooms are solid but not exceptional - a remodel is probably overdue. The location is gorgeous, though, and you are right on the lake. And the food quality is very good at breakfast and lunch, then a bit less good at dinner. The service is where everything falls apart. It is woefully uncoordinated with many missed details. Nobody congratulated us on our honeymoon despite us telling them well in ad...
