Expert Review: Arima Hotel & Spa

Arima Hotel & Spa, San Sebastian: A Tranquil Michelin Key Retreat

Arima Hotel & Spa in San Sebastian, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely lauded as a beautiful, eco-conscious haven offering a blend of modern design, excellent facilities, and a serene forest setting. Guests frequently highlight its commitment to sustainability, impressive spa, and attentive staff, though some minor issues regarding room functionalities and service consistency have been noted.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Arima Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with ratings consistently high across various platforms. Booking.com rates it a "Wonderful" 9.1 out of 10 based on over 2,600 reviews. Small Luxury Hotels of the World shows a 4.8 out of 5 from 2,430 reviews, while TripAdvisor notes a 4.7 out of 5. The Michelin Guide itself gives it a commendable guest score of 17.6 out of 20. Common descriptors include "beautiful hotel with very modern rooms," "calming," "comfortable," "clean," "eco friendly," and offering a sense of "quiet luxury".

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise the hotel's striking eco-conscious design and commitment to sustainability. Built to rigorous Passivhaus standards, it's a prototype of zero-energy buildings in Spain, utilizing aerothermal and geothermal power, triple-glazed windows, and rainwater collection, among other initiatives.

The Foresta Wellness Spa is another significant draw, featuring an infrared sauna, halotherapy, a hydrotherapy pool, and both warm (30°C) and cool (23°C) swimming pools. The rooftop infinity pool, open seasonally from June 15 to September 15, offers refreshing dips with serene forest views and a poolside bar. The hotel's modern, Scandinavian-inspired design, characterized by minimalist aesthetics, natural materials, and large windows framing forest vistas, also receives high acclaim.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at Arima Hotel & Spa are described as modern, comfortable, and beautifully designed. They exude a "warm and organic" feel, with a neutral color palette of wood, stone, and iron, complemented by ample natural light from large windows and forest views. The interior environments are meticulously controlled for temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels, with first-rate soundproofing ensuring a tranquil stay. In-room amenities include smart TVs, minibars, complimentary bottled water, organic Argan Meadow bath products, and in many cases, rain showers and comfortable beds. Some guests have highlighted excellent domotics in the rooms. However, some minor criticisms include baths being described as small and narrow, and the WC/bidet area feeling confined. There was also a complaint about the air conditioning not cooling below 23°C and difficult-to-operate blinds.

4. Dining Experience

Arima Hotel & Spa offers two distinct dining options focused on local, organic, and seasonal ingredients. Misura Restaurant provides a refined gourmet experience, with a focus on vegetarian and Basque cuisine prepared through slow-fire grilling, all within an eco-friendly setting and offering forest views. Misura is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For more informal dining, the Tilia Deli & Café serves fresh coffees, light bites, and a wholesome seasonal menu, ideal for a healthy breakfast or brunch on its outdoor terrace overlooking the forest.

Breakfast, available for €24 for adults and €12 for children under 12, is often praised as "amazing" and "wonderful," featuring an organic buffet with fresh bread, pastries, juices, fruits, cereals, and hot à la carte options, all presented with "exceptional attention to detail". One review, however, found the breakfast to be "very average".

5. Service & Staff

The hotel's staff receives widespread commendation for being "fantastic," "helpful," "very friendly and accommodating," "highly committed, welcoming," and fluent in English, with many guests describing the service as "5-star". This consistent positive feedback highlights a generally professional and hospitable team dedicated to guest satisfaction. Nevertheless, one guest reported a "poor service" experience with issues related to luggage handling and a general feeling of "small inconveniences".

6. Location & Accessibility

Nestled in the tranquil Miramón Forest, a verdant suburb, Arima Hotel & Spa offers a peaceful retreat away from the bustling city center of San Sebastian. Despite its secluded feel, it is conveniently connected to the city center and old town by a short bus ride. The location is ideal for those seeking nature, with opportunities for strolling or cycling in the surrounding forest. The hotel also provides electric car charging and complimentary self-parking, though covered parking is available for €16 per day.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing can vary, rooms typically range from $87 to $1023, with an average of $228 for a weeknight and $167 for a weekend night. January is noted as the cheapest month, while July is the most expensive. Many guests feel the quality and service justify the cost, stating it is "worth every bit for quality and service". However, the additional costs for breakfast (€24 per adult), spa access (€30 for 90 minutes), and potentially €3 for spa flip-flops, as well as a high babysitting rate (€60 per hour), have been mentioned as factors impacting the overall value perception for some.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring criticisms include the seasonal nature of the rooftop pool (closed outside of June 15 - September 15) and its unheated status. Some guests found the water in the spa and rooftop pools to be colder than expected. The spa, while generally appreciated, incurs an additional fee (€30) for access, and some guests have faced issues with it being fully booked or noted limited sauna capacity. Other frustrations include air conditioning not effectively cooling rooms, difficult-to-operate blinds, and inconveniently early housekeeping schedules. There was also a specific instance of "poor service" with luggage delivery issues that negatively impacted one guest's experience and value perception.

What a lovely modern hotel, situated in a lush green forest setting. The parking was spacious and very convenient with charging points for our ev vehicle. The room was very clean and comfortable. Friendly staff greeted us with a welcome drink of delicious local Txakoli wine, and accomodated our very early check-in! Bus stops just outside the hotel to hop on to go into old town. Highly recommend!!

Hotel is beautiful. Very modern and decorations are incredible! We thought the spa was a bit expensive but it is worth the money as it was really clean and super modern. Sauna was maybe not warm enough for us! Staff at the hotel (and spa) were excellent and helpful. Would stay again!

While we thoroughly enjoyed the modern design of this hotel and the room, it did come with a few issues. The lighting system in the room is complicated. In the bathroom everything is either off with a small night light, or everything is on. Same with the rest of the room unless you turned some off before turning the main light switch off. Bit confusing. The ventilation in the bathroom was very p...

I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Arima & Spa. The hotel is beautifully designed, peaceful, and perfectly located. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. Joel at reception gave us a warm greeting and a great overview of the hotel’s amenities, plus excellent tips for exploring San Sebastián. When a reservation I had made at a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant turned o...

We stayed here on our road trip en route to Portugal and will definitely return. Extremely comfortable, elegantly finished rooms and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The underground parking was also very secure which was important to us as we were able to safely leave most of our stuff in the car overnight. Breakfast was also excellent. We can’t wait to go back to San Sebastián for a long...
