Expert Review: White Sands Hotel
The White Sands Hotel in Honolulu, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive and nostalgic experience, setting itself apart from the modern high-rises of Waikiki. It's often praised for its intentional throwback to the 1970s, creating an atmosphere of romance, personality, and laid-back bohemianism.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for the White Sands Hotel is largely positive, with guests frequently describing it as "Good" to "Wonderful." It holds an average guest score of 7.9/10 based on thousands of reviews, with high marks for its location (9.2), staff (8.8), and cleanliness (8.2). The sentiment leans towards appreciating its unique retro charm and boutique feel, making it a hit for travelers seeking an experience different from standard branded hotels.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently love the hotel's distinctive retro tiki vibe and its lush, palm-lined central courtyard. The main draw is often the inviting swimming pool area, complete with a grotto-style hot tub and a circular tiki bar featuring swings, offering an authentic Hawaiian atmosphere. Its central Waikiki location is also a major highlight, as is its stylish design and the friendly, helpful staff.
3. Room Quality
The White Sands Hotel features 94 guestrooms and suites, all designed to evoke a 1960s and 1970s Hawaiian aesthetic. Rooms boast vintage maps of Hawaii, tiki mugs, shaka-shaped towel hooks, popcorn ceilings, and old-school push-button telephones with curly cords. Despite the vintage theme, modern amenities like large flat-screen LCD TVs are included. Each room typically includes a private balcony or patio, a wet bar with a sink, a microwave, and a counter-height refrigerator. While comfortable and spacious, some guests have noted "vintage quirks" such as a notably low shower head (for taller individuals) and the absence of dressers or luggage racks in some rooms, with closets sometimes located in the bathroom. Some reviewers mentioned a lack of basic kitchen utensils.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's on-site restaurant, Heyday, is described as a "knowingly nostalgic restaurant" run by well-known local restaurateurs. The poolside bar and restaurant are highly praised, with guests noting the food is "surprisingly good." Additionally, a café on-site serves local coffee from early morning to early afternoon.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at White Sands Hotel consistently receives high praise for being friendly, helpful, accommodating, and attentive. Many guests highlight the multi-lingual staff and the convenience of a 24-hour front desk as contributing to a pleasant and hospitable experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
The White Sands Hotel boasts an excellent and very convenient central Waikiki location. Situated just off bustling Kuhio Avenue, it's a mere two blocks from Waikiki Beach and a short 10-minute walk to popular attractions like the Royal Hawaiian Center and the International Market Place. Guests appreciate being within walking distance to numerous shops, restaurants, and the beach.
7. Value & Pricing
The White Sands Hotel is often considered good value for money, with some guests calling it a "bargain hunter's dream" for a boutique hotel in Waikiki. Room rates can start from approximately $96 to $179 per night, although prices vary. While free Wi-Fi is provided, guests should be aware of a daily amenity fee. Parking can be a consideration, with valet parking available for a surcharge and on-site self-parking costing around $35 per night, which is noted as difficult to find in Waikiki.
8. Common Complaints
Despite its many positive aspects, some recurring criticisms include noise issues, particularly for rooms situated above the lively pool bar or facing the street, where traffic and early morning garbage collection can be disruptive. Some guests have reported "damp smells" in rooms and issues with carpet cleanliness. There have also been instances of poor room service or inconsistent housekeeping, with some rooms not being "100% clean," and even reports of mold on ceilings or showers. Additionally, some rooms lack USB charging ports and coffee machines.

The White Sands Hotel is a retro hotel. There is no lift, so you have to use the stairs. My room was sufficiently large with a comfortable king-size bed, balcony, pool view, fridge, microwave, kettle, TV, safe, telephone and hairdryer. Housekeeping is only available on request, otherwise towels are delivered to your room every three days. As the Heyday (restaurant and bar) is open to the public, i...

We enjoyed our stay at White Sands. We knew it was not a high-end hotel, so we did not have high expectations. The location is convenient, and the swings are cute. The staff is what makes this place worth staying. Everyone was welcoming and ready to assist with whatever we needed. RJ is the best - White Sands is lucky to have him!

We loved our stay at White Sands. Perfect location. Two short blocks from the beach, one block from shopping and food options. The pool area was so intimate and vibey. The rooms could use some work but for the price I found it very comfortable. All of the staff we encountered was friendly and happy. I loved that this was a smaller hotel. Felt more homey. For sure would stay here again.

Megan was incredible. Hope the Lord blesses her in every way. This place has no elevators, so if you have trouble navigating stairs, be sure you're room is not on the third floor. My review is based on value. This is not the Ritz. If you are used to luxury, this is not what you're looking for. I am on a budget, and I felt like I got a great bang for my buck. There is a small ABC storeexpens we...

Great location and price. Unbelievable loudness and parting every night from the outdoor bar and restaurant that blasts music until midnight. This is what I would expect from a frat party, not a hotel. Let hotel guests enjoy getting a good nights rest, and leave the party services to the nightclubs.
