Expert Review: W Santiago

W Santiago, a Michelin Key Selected property in the upscale Las Condes neighborhood, generally receives positive feedback for its vibrant atmosphere, exceptional service, and prime location, though some guests note areas for improvement in room upkeep and value.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The W Santiago holds an overall rating of "Very Good," with an average score of 8.1 out of 10 based on over 500 reviews on Booking.com. Marriott's average customer rating is 4.1 out of 5. While location and staff consistently receive high praise, some guests express concerns regarding value for money and the condition of amenities, leading to a mixed sentiment that leans towards positive.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several standout features:

  • Rooftop Pool and Bar (Red2one/Wet Deck): Offering stunning panoramic views of Santiago and the Andes Mountains, this area is frequently described as exceptional, cool, and a vibrant scene for both daytime relaxation and lively evening events with a glamorous crowd and DJ sets.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff is a recurring highlight, often praised as superb, excellent, amazing, helpful, friendly, and genuinely attentive, with many guests mentioning specific individuals who went above and beyond.
  • Prime Location: Situated in the sophisticated El Golf financial and entertainment district of Las Condes, the hotel is celebrated for its excellent, walkable location, close proximity to numerous restaurants, shopping (including Costanera Center), and metro stations.
  • Chic Design: The hotel's contemporary design, featuring a "bold collision of textures and color" with mirrored walls, copper panels, and velvet tones, offers a modern and playful luxury experience.

Room Quality

The rooms at W Santiago are often described as spacious, stunning, and very comfortable, featuring modern design with interesting combinations of colors and textures. Many boast floor-to-ceiling windows with incredible city or Andes views. Bathrooms are typically spacious, offering large showers, high-pressure rain showers, and Bliss toiletries; some suites include separate deep-soaking tubs. Standard amenities include 42-inch LCD TVs, minibars, and in-room safes, with some suites providing private terraces. However, some guests note that rooms can appear "a little dated" or show "a bit of wear and tear." There are also occasional comments about corner rooms becoming too warm in summer and windows needing cleaning.

Dining Experience

W Santiago offers a notable dining experience with multiple onsite restaurants, including the acclaimed Nikkei restaurant, Karai, which guests have called "exceptional." Other dining options like Nosso and Terraza are also available. The breakfast, often served buffet-style, receives high marks for being superb, great, and excellent, sometimes including free champagne. Vegan and vegetarian options are also provided.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at W Santiago consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests frequently describe the team as excellent, superb, amazing, helpful, friendly, courteous, and highly attentive. Numerous reviews highlight individual staff members by name (e.g., Evelyn, Paola, Francisca, Dani, Juan Pablo, Lucas, Jose), commending their kindness, professionalism, and willingness to go "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay. The hotel is noted for its experienced staff.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location in the upscale El Golf neighborhood of Las Condes is a significant advantage. This financial and entertainment hub is considered desirable, safe, and offers easy access to numerous good restaurants and shops. It's within walking distance of the Costanera Center, South America's largest shopping mall, and well-connected to public transportation, with El Golf Station a mere 6-minute walk away. The area is highly walkable, and Uber is a convenient option for exploring further. An airport shuttle service is available for a fee.

Value & Pricing

The perceived value for money at W Santiago can be mixed, with ratings ranging from 7.3 on Booking.com to 3.8 on Marriott's platform and 2.5 by KAYAK users. While many appreciate the luxury experience, some guests find the pricing to be on the higher side, with past rates for standard rooms around $250-$429 per night. The cost of in-room Wi-Fi, which is often not included and costs extra, is a point of contention for a luxury property.

Common Complaints

Despite the many positives, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Room Condition: A few guests have mentioned that some rooms appear "a little dated" or show minor wear and tear, and some maintenance issues have been reported.
  • Wi-Fi Charges: A frequent point of dissatisfaction is the charge for in-room high-speed internet, as guests expect complimentary Wi-Fi in a 5-star hotel, even though it's free in common areas.
  • Rooftop Pool Access: While a major highlight, the rooftop pool sometimes hosts private events, which can limit access for hotel guests.
  • Window Cleanliness/Temperature: Some reviews noted that windows in rooms, particularly corner rooms, could be cleaner and that these rooms could become excessively hot during summer.
  • Gym Hours: The gym's operating hours have been described as "weird," possibly due to independent ownership.
  • "Style over Substance": Some older reviews, characteristic of the W brand, occasionally suggested a preference for style over practical substance, such as loud lobby music.

Truly the best/only hotel for us to stay when in Santiago. We stayed here 15 years ago, and were curious to find out if it had kept up to the excellent standards we experienced back then. We were pleasantly surprised it is now better than then. As members of Bonvoy, we expected high standards, but this time it exceeded our expectations. Service top notch, everybody very friendly, special shot out ...

Excellent staff at this location but my issues were that the room was not ready at check in, and they did not allow a late check out, stating it is their policy. Issue I have is in talking with several other guests at dinner, they were afforded 4pm check out. For the record, I am a titanium elite member which should guarantee that option per Marriott policy. I will be advising my clients to co...

This is a 5 star hotel. We couldn’t speak highly enough about all of the staff and amenities. Jose, Javier and Maximiliano couldn’t be any more helpful or friendly and we couldn’t speak high enough about everything they did for us. I proposed on the rooftop and couldn’t be more grateful to the staff. The room was amazing with views overlooking the mountains and the quality of the Towels, linen, sh...

We really liked the location - lots of restaurant options and a nice park. Our room was lovely and we felt fortunate to be upgraded by Benjamin at reception. He is very warm and professional - an asset to the hotel. Next time we will try out the restaurants within the hotel. The rooftop bar has a beautiful view not to be missed.

Had a perfect stay here over the past three nights. AC (air conditioning) got strong & cold, just how I like it. The room was very quiet with no noise (& I am very sensitive to noise!). The bed was also super comfortable & high quality so I got great sleeps. Room service was prompt & the front desk was very friendly/happy to help with all requests. Special appreciation to Mercy for her kindness &...

We’ve stayed in room 730 - a large corner room with king sized bed and bathtub next to the bed - for 2 nights. Hotel is in a safe business neighborhood. A rooftopbar & swimming pool with a great view towards the Andes as well. Service is friendly and attentive. Free parking is included in the self-parking garage, which we’ve appreciated a lot! Great hotel to stay if you’re visiting Santiago! 20 ...
