2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly enchanted by several aspects of Villa Retiro. The pristine condition of the rooms, gardens, and pool is frequently commended. The jewel in its crown is undoubtedly the Michelin-starred restaurant, celebrated for its amazing cuisine. The staff consistently receives accolades for their exceptional service, making guests feel well looked after. The property itself is described as quirky, beautiful, and a lovely historical building, complemented by a contemporary addition housing new suites. Further enhancing the guest experience is an on-site spa featuring hydromassage jets and waterfall showers, along with a culinary school for those wishing to delve deeper into the region's gastronomy.
3. Room Quality
The rooms at Villa Retiro are designed for comfort and elegance. They are spacious and air-conditioned, featuring an elegant, rustic décor with dark wooden furnishings and charming ceiling beams. Guests can enjoy modern amenities such as a balcony with garden views, a computer, free WiFi, a flat-screen satellite TV, a minibar, and a safe. The private bathrooms are well-appointed, including a towel heater and complimentary toiletries. The original rooms and suites exude historical opulence, while the newer suites offer spacious and perfectly restful accommodations. Premium bedding ensures a comfortable stay.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Villa Retiro is a significant draw. The on-site restaurant, also named Villa Retiro, has held a Michelin star since 2009 and boasts 2 Sol Repsol Guide awards, being considered a top restaurant in the Tarragona region. Under the direction of fourth-generation hospitality professional Chef Fran López, the restaurant offers traditional, creative, and market cuisine that reinterprets the exquisite flavors of the Ebro Delta. Guests can choose from three distinct gastronomic experiences: the Classic, Tribute, and "More than a Tribute" menus, highlighting local produce such as Delta rice dishes, poultry, fish, shellfish, and seaweed. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, though it's important to note it is closed on Sunday evenings and all day on Mondays. Breakfast is also highly praised, described as plentiful, of great quality, and even includes cava.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Villa Retiro consistently receive high marks, scoring 9.4 for staff performance on Booking.com. Guests frequently describe the team as "great" and "very attentive," with particular mentions of staff members going above and beyond to ensure guests are well looked after. The personalized attention contributes significantly to the overall positive guest experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
Hotel Villa Retiro is situated in Xerta, surrounded by picturesque, large green gardens, offering a peaceful retreat close to nature and the mountains. While tranquil, it provides good accessibility to regional attractions. The Delta del Ebro Nature Reserve is approximately a 50-minute drive away, offering opportunities for nature exploration. Reus Airport and PortAventura Theme Park can both be reached in just over an hour by car. The hotel also offers free private parking on-site. It is located within 15 km of attractions such as Els Ports, Monument a la Batalla de l'Ebre, and Santa Maria de Tortosa Cathedral.
7. Value & Pricing
Guests rate the "Value for money" at Villa Retiro at 8.5 on Booking.com. While specific current pricing isn't readily available, the Michelin Guide assures the best prices for direct bookings, indicating a commitment to competitive rates for its luxurious offering. The restaurant's tasting menu was noted at 62 euros in 2015, but current prices for the gastronomic menus (Classic, Tribute, More than a Tribute) would be higher given the Michelin star recognition and the passage of time. The comprehensive facilities, Michelin-starred dining, and high level of service contribute to its perceived value as a luxury destination.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of criticism have been noted by guests. One review mentioned that the pool "could do with a clean" and that "massage spouts apparently not functioning" at the time of their stay. Another guest expressed disappointment that the restaurant was closed on the evening they stayed, highlighting the importance of checking restaurant operating hours (Wednesday to Sunday afternoon) when planning a visit. These appear to be isolated incidents rather than recurring widespread issues, with overall cleanliness and facilities generally receiving high scores.

The hotel is beautiful, with amazing rooms, nice swimming pool and garden. Great breakfast, 10/10. Unfortunately, we encountered some problems and we're not provided proper solutions. The shower literally fell off and kicked badly my husband's head. We ended up with an injury and without shower for the rest of the stay. Also, there was a spider's nest just above our heads leaving lots of dirt on t...

It is an ESSENTIAL experience to eat or dine in its restaurant and stay overnight in any of its rooms, especially the Imperial Suite. Excellent management, with Domingo Bascos at the helm. Excellent Restaurant with Fernando as master of ceremonies. Unbeatable. A team with a well-deserved Michelin Star. Excellent Fátima the physio who restores back and limbs with her hands. Beautiful oasis within the Catalán countryside. Personnel was focused on creating an excellent experience, providing unexpected complimentary services outside of the usual as well. We also took the chance to enjoy the restaurant twice, and boy was that an experience, especially the homage to the delights of the area.

We just ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent, the place was exquisite and the service was great. They are fantastic with my toddler, one of the servers is knowledgeable how to handle toddler boredom and tantrums . They also allow us to explore the hotel after eating in the restaurant.

Truly a five star experience! Staying in a historic building was super charming and the staff were great. It was quiet and relaxing, the perfect getaway I could have hoped for. Pros: large rooms, tons of character, comfortable beds, big claw foot tub, friendly staff, early check-in, big pool, grounds were well kept, great breakfast, quiet, mostly adults. Cons: a little mold in bedroom (old, hist...

Loved this place. Unfortunately the kitchen is closed on Mondays and there’s not much going on around there to eat. But they’ve just built a set of garden suites and the main house is beautiful restored. It has a grotto.
