Palacio de Samaniego: An Exceptional Michelin Key Selected Retreat in Rioja Alavesa

Palacio de Samaniego, a Michelin Key Selected property in the charming village of Samaniego, Spain, consistently garners exceptional reviews, with many guests describing it as a truly unforgettable experience. This nine-room boutique hotel, a centuries-old palace transformed into a luxurious and sustainably-minded estate by banking CEO Ariane de Rothschild, offers a serene retreat amidst the prestigious Rioja Alavesa wine region.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Palacio de Samaniego is overwhelmingly positive, with an "Exceptional" rating of 9.7 based on numerous verified reviews. Guests frequently use words like "outstanding," "super cozy and charming but historic and elegant," "impeccable," and "gorgeous" to describe their stays. The hotel is praised for its elegant, chic, and perfectly arranged details, creating an effortlessly refined atmosphere.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Palacio de Samaniego. The hotel's modern design, harmoniously blended with its historic palace structure and a globetrotting collection of objets d'art, is a major draw. The commitment to sustainability, utilizing thermal insulation, LED lighting, a geothermal system, and solar panels, also stands out. The Basque fine-dining restaurant, Tierra y Vino, is a significant highlight, as is the outdoor swimming pool offering stunning views, the fitness center, sun terrace, and lush garden. The warm hospitality and attentive staff are also frequently mentioned as key to an exceptional stay.

3. Room Quality

The nine rooms and suites, each uniquely named after a grape varietal and decorated in different color palettes inspired by the seasons, are described as "perfect spacy rooms" with remarkable attention to detail. Guests appreciate the blend of sobriety and modern comforts, featuring air conditioning, private bathrooms, bathrobes, free WiFi, and soundproofing. Comfort is paramount, with premium bedding, down comforters, and high-quality local materials. Amenities such as flat-screen TVs, refrigerators, coffee/tea making facilities, and safes are standard. Some rooms also offer terraces and city views.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site Michelin-recommended restaurant, Tierra y Vino, is a culinary beacon. Led by Chef Bruno Coelho, the restaurant offers an ever-changing menu that boldly reinterprets local Basque and French gastronomy using market-fresh, seasonal ingredients. A tasting menu is available for both lunch and dinner, often accompanied by exceptional wine pairings from the hotel's impressive cellar, which includes selections from Rothschild family wineries like Macán. The restaurant's exquisite interior, visible glass-enclosed wine cellar, and beautiful garden terrace with a waterfall enhance the dining experience. Breakfast is described as delicious, featuring regional products, though some guests noted a preference for a buffet-style option over the set selection of pastries and meats. There is also Le Jardin d'Ariane, a second terrace in the garden offering a more accessible menu.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Palacio de Samaniego consistently receives glowing reviews. Guests frequently praise the staff for being "welcoming, really attentive," "helpful and polite," and for providing "warm hospitality." Many staff members are locals, adding a distinct character and cultural richness to the experience. The hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, concierge services, and staff who are proficient in English, Spanish, French, and Russian.

6. Location & Accessibility

Palacio de Samaniego boasts an excellent location in Samaniego, nestled in the heart of Spain's oldest winemaking region, Rioja Alavesa. It serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby medieval villages and numerous wineries, with Bodegas Remirez de Ganuza, Bodegas Amaren, and Bodegas Baigorri all within a short walk. The area offers a wealth of activities, including hiking, cycling, wine tasting, golf, bird watching, and even hot air balloon rides. The hotel provides free private parking and valet parking on site, and is generally accessible, offering wheelchair-accessible amenities.

7. Value & Pricing

While Palacio de Samaniego is a luxury property, with rates starting from approximately 290 EUR or $357 per night, many guests feel that the experience justifies the cost, stating that "every cent the stay costs, it's worth it." The best deals are often found during the low season, particularly in April and May, or by booking stays on Mondays or Tuesdays.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of feedback have been noted. One guest mentioned occasional questionable background music choices. Another experienced some noise from construction next door, though acknowledged this was beyond the hotel's control. Additionally, while breakfast is delicious, a few guests expressed a preference for a buffet style or the option to order specific items rather than a set selection of pastries and meats. Some rooms, while still "absolutely perfect," might be on the smaller side for certain preferences.

Beautiful place, incredible attention to detail, great breakfast and service always with a smile. We enjoyed the experience. Just wish we slept better as the room was too hot even with the AC, and the sheets were too crispy (personal choice). Dinner was the most disappointing part after the incredible meals we had all over Basque Country. We enjoyed the stay, but…. I’m not sure how much control ...

Not really sure how I stumbled upon this gem, but I'm glad I did. Everything about our time here was perfect. Not a lot happens in Samaniego except wine. SO, it was perfect! Plus the proximity to everything exceptional about the Rioja region was perfect. (Remirez de Ganuza is across the street). With the knowledge and exemplary offerings from the chef and sommelier, there was no reason to dine any...

We spent 2 incredible nights at this hotel. The property is gorgeous, as was our room. The service is outstanding, as is the restaurant. We had both breakfast and dinner here and were very impressed. We also enjoyed the pool, complimentary e-bikes and the short walk to a few beautiful neighbouring wineries. I highly recommend!
