Expert Review: Viesca Suites & Villas

Viesca Suites & Villas, a Michelin Key Selected property in Reggello, Italy, offers guests a luxurious retreat blending historic charm with modern comforts amidst the stunning Tuscan countryside. While the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, a few critical experiences highlight areas for improvement.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Viesca Suites & Villas generally receives "superb" to "exceptional" ratings from guests, with many describing it as a "wonderful place" and a "magical place." The property is celebrated for its quiet, spacious, and beautifully designed countryside escape. The Michelin Key selection further underscores its high quality and unique appeal. However, there are a few isolated, yet significant, negative reviews that stand in contrast to the general praise.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of Viesca Suites & Villas:

  • Idyllic Location & Design: The estate, a 16th-century manor house surrounded by villas, cottages, and gardens, is nestled in the spectacular Tuscan countryside, providing an oasis of beauty and serenity. Its timeless elegance is noted, combining classic country-estate living with high-end hotel amenities.
  • Extensive Amenities: The property boasts a large outdoor freshwater swimming pool, two well-kept grass tennis courts, a fitness center, and a full-service spa (Spa La Corte) offering a whirlpool, Turkish bath, sauna, and various treatments. Yoga classes, in-room spa treatments, and bike rentals are also available. Many villas come with their own private pools.
  • Culinary Offerings: Il Borro Tuscan Bistro Viesca serves as a restaurant, bar, and specialty grocer, also offering cooking classes. The buffet breakfast is highly rated.
  • Pet-Friendly: Viesca Suites & Villas is pet-friendly, which is a significant plus for many travelers.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Viesca Suites & Villas, including suites, cottages, and multi-bedroom villas, are described as spacious, comfortable, and impeccably maintained. Rooms feature a blend of contemporary construction and antique atmosphere, with furnishings often crafted by local artisans. Guests can expect air conditioning, private bathrooms (often large with spacious showers and sometimes bathtubs), garden views, flat-screen TVs, tea/coffee makers, free toiletries, bathrobes, and safes. Villas offer fully equipped kitchens and ample living spaces, some with original frescoes and fireplaces.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Viesca Suites & Villas is highly regarded. The on-site Il Borro Tuscan Bistro offers Italian and local cuisines, with options for vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets. Breakfast, often a buffet, receives excellent reviews for its variety, including fresh pastries, pancakes, cheese, fruits, and juice. Guests can also enjoy room service, a snack bar, a bar/lounge area, and outdoor dining. Cooking classes are a popular offering for those looking to immerse themselves in Tuscan culinary traditions.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at Viesca Suites & Villas are frequently praised for being exceptionally kind, helpful, friendly, polite, and attentive. Guests have highlighted positive interactions with reception, bar, restaurant, and spa personnel, contributing to a welcoming and memorable stay. Multi-lingual staff are available.

6. Location & Accessibility

Viesca Suites & Villas is strategically located in Reggello, Tuscany, approximately half an hour closer to Florence than the original Il Borro estate. This makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. It's about 31 minutes by car from Florence and conveniently located near attractions such as The Mall Luxury Outlet (approximately 7.5 miles or 12 km away) and Ponte Vecchio (about 20 miles or 32 km away). The Incisa Train Station provides easy access to major Tuscan cities like Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Lucca, and San Gimignano. The property offers free self-parking and a shuttle service.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific average nightly rates are not broadly advertised, the Michelin Guide guarantees "best prices" for direct bookings. Agoda.com shows an "outstanding" overall rating of 9.5 for value for money. Rooms and suites range from approximately $448 USD for Superior Rooms to significantly higher prices for larger, multi-bedroom villas, some of which feature private pools.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the high praise, some guests have reported recurring issues:

  • Insects and Mosquitoes: Several reviews mention problems with insects and mosquitoes in rooms, sometimes attributed to housekeeping leaving windows open.
  • Hot Water Issues: A significant complaint involved a lack of hot water for extended periods, even in rooms costing over €350 per night.
  • Front Desk Service Inconsistencies: Some guests experienced "appalling" front desk service, with unfulfilled requests for activity bookings and unresponsiveness after 9 PM.
  • Noise: One review specifically noted a noisy room located above the hotel restaurant, with staff creating disturbances late at night.
  • Facility Access/Maintenance: Issues with gym lighting/AC and stuck entrance doors to buildings were also reported.

First and foremost, I urge everyone to steer clear of this hotel. SHL, you should be ashamed—this hotel falls far below the standards your chain claims to uphold. 1. We were on our honeymoon, and as a “gift,” they gave us a room above the hotel’s restaurant, where staff exited the restaurant blaring loud music, shouting, and dragging tables and chairs. 2. There was no hot water. This is a suppos...

The worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The service staff was unprofessional and dismissive. The hotel claims to be five-star, but it doesn’t even deserve one star—absolutely shameful! SLH, because of the terrible experience at this hotel, you’ve lost a customer. If you continue like this, I’m certain you’ll lose many more.

The customer service here is beyond any expectations we had. We had to leave at 6am for a tour and had the service desk schedule transportation for us. Without us even asking, the staff informed us that we’d miss breakfast and that the kitchen would make to go breakfast boxes for us, we just had to remind them at dinner. While having dinner we mentioned the to go boxed only to be told that the ...

Beautiful grounds, great professional staff but altogether disappointing. Our room was large and well appointed but felt cold and not welcoming. Breakfast was very good but dinner was the worst food we had in 3 weeks in Italy and we ordered what the restaurant director recommended. The staff recommended some nearby restaurants that were exceptional. Well located for day trips. Most expensive...

The property is very nice, as were the rooms. The pool was lovely as well but sadly there are no “child-free” hours (as I have seen at other luxury hotels) so relaxing by the pool was disturbed with splashing and yelling. The food was not good- the pizza night was specifically terrible, but breakfast was okay. The prices were completely out of control- 18 euro for a spritz is astronomical. There a...

We’ve stayed in many beautiful hotels around the world, but this one felt very special. My husband and I loved our stay here so much. The property is massive and stunning- the rooms are perfectly decorated, spacious, clean, luxurious but also intimate. The service was outstanding. We also love the activities they offer and got to play some tennis. We can’t wait to stay here again! Grazie, Viesca!
