Viceroy Los Cabos: A Comprehensive Review of a Michelin Key One-Key Property

Viceroy Los Cabos, recognized with a Michelin One Key, stands out as a triumph of avant-garde architecture and luxurious hospitality in San José del Cabo, Mexico. The resort's design, often likened to an art installation or a futuristic set, masterfully blends stark white cubes with expansive reflecting pools, creating a visually stunning and serene environment.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Viceroy Los Cabos is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently using words like "incredible," "amazing," "stunning," and "breathtaking." It boasts a "fabulous" rating of 8.9 based on 207 reviews on Booking.com, with high scores for cleanliness (9.1), facilities (9.2), comfort (9.6), and staff (9.2). Trip.com shows an 8.6 rating from 109 verified reviews. The property is often described as a "unique and chic experience" offering a "sense of peace."

2. Key Highlights

Guests are consistently enamored by several aspects of Viceroy Los Cabos:

  • Design & Architecture: The most frequently praised highlight is the hotel's distinctive architecture by Miguel Ángel Aragonés, featuring clean lines, cantilevers, and "floating boxes" mirrored in still blue reflecting pools. It's described as "cinematic" and a "living art museum."
  • Water Features: The pervasive presence of water, with buildings appearing to float and multiple pools, contributes to a calming and visually soothing atmosphere. There are five outdoor pools, including infinity-edge beachfront pools and an adults-only rooftop pool.
  • Service: Many reviews highlight the impeccable, friendly, and attentive staff, with "personal hosts" and "butlers" often mentioned for going the extra mile.
  • Amenities: The resort offers a wide array of high-quality amenities, including a world-class 11,000 sq ft spa, a Harley Pasternak-designed fitness center, a cinema with daily screenings, an art gallery with workshops, and complimentary bicycle rentals. The V Team Kids Club is also a plus for families.
  • Vibe: The ambiance transforms from a modern retreat during the day to a cinematic experience at night with lounge music and purple lights. It's generally considered relaxed but can have a lively, social atmosphere, making it suitable for small groups, bachelorette parties, and destination weddings.

3. Room Quality

Viceroy Los Cabos offers 192 rooms, including 86 suites, all with direct ocean views. The interiors are chic, modern, and minimalist, with a focus on comfort. Key features include:

  • Views: All rooms look out onto the water, offering views of the Sea of Cortez framed by the hotel's cascading pools.
  • Comfort & Design: Rooms are described as "modern retreats, pristine and white," with streamlined decor by Italian brand Poliform. Beds are "irresistibly plush" and comfortable.
  • Amenities: Thoughtful luxuries include Nespresso machines, Polk Audio sound systems, 65-inch Smart TVs, complimentary bottled water, rain showers, plush bathrobes, and full-sized bath amenities by Corpus. Many rooms feature furnished balconies, some with soaking tubs or private plunge pools.
  • Space: Rooms and bathrooms are generally large, with floor-to-ceiling windows. Junior Suites and Premier Suites offer expansive living and dining areas.

4. Dining Experience

The culinary scene at Viceroy Los Cabos is highly praised, offering a range of distinct experiences:

  • Variety: There are four on-site restaurants and three bars/lounges, including a rooftop lounge. Options range from modern Mexican comfort food to Japanese-Mexican fusion and locally caught seafood.
  • Casero: This restaurant serves hearty, handcrafted Mexican breakfast and lunch. Guests enjoy the sea breeze and water views while dining.
  • Nido: Meaning "nest" in Spanish, Nido is an iconic, nest-like centerpiece offering ceviches and sushi in an innovative indoor-outdoor space.
  • Cielomar Rooftop: This elegant rooftop restaurant and lounge provides expansive views of the Sea of Cortez, offering multi-course chef's menus, locally caught seafood, premium steaks, and wood-fired cooking. It often features live music.
  • Awacate: A newer addition, Awacate offers street-style tacos and mezcal cocktails with live music in a colorful outdoor patio setting.
  • Quality: Food is consistently described as excellent, with a focus on organic ingredients and fresh, local flavors. However, one reviewer noted breakfast could offer more options.

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback on hospitality is overwhelmingly positive. The staff is frequently described as "incredibly friendly," "attentive," "helpful," and "eager/happy to serve."

  • Personalized Service: The "Host Service" curates guests' days, personalizes accommodations, and assists with dining, spa, and local experiences. Many guests highlight individual staff members for their exceptional service.
  • Efficiency: Butlers are available via WhatsApp, though one review noted a slow response to an AC issue.
  • Culture: The overall work culture is described by employees as relaxed, professional, strong, vibrant, and creative, with a focus on teamwork.

6. Location & Accessibility

Viceroy Los Cabos is ideally situated in San José del Cabo, known as the quieter, more upscale counterpart to Cabo San Lucas.

  • Proximity to San José del Cabo: The hotel is a short bike ride or quick cab fare away from the old part of San José del Cabo, which is a hub for dining, art galleries, and colorful cantinas.
  • Airport Access: It's conveniently located just 20-25 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). Private airport transfers are available.
  • Beachfront: The resort sits directly on a white sand beach, offering beach cabanas, loungers, and opportunities for beach fitness classes like Pilates and yoga. However, the ocean surf can be very rough and is generally not suitable for swimming.
  • Transportation: Complimentary bicycles are available, and valet parking is offered. Cabo San Lucas, with its vibrant nightlife, is about a 25-minute taxi ride away.

7. Value & Pricing

Viceroy Los Cabos is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this.

  • Cost: While offering a wonderful experience and high quality, the cost of services and dining at the resort is noted as very expensive, with everything priced in USD and subject to a high mark-up, including 16% tax and a 15.6% service charge. Room rates can start from around $365, but frequently are in the $500-$600+ range per night, often on a room-only basis.
  • Worth the Cost? Many guests find the overall experience "worth the room price for the quality of the property and location." However, some suggest it's only worth it if a good room rate including food and drink is secured. Booking directly can sometimes offer perks like resort credit and complimentary breakfast.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted:

  • High Costs for Services/Dining: The most consistent complaint revolves around the very high prices for food, drinks, and other services on the property, in addition to the room rate.
  • Service Inconsistencies: While generally praised, some guests have experienced slow or rude service from certain staff members, particularly regarding order delays. One guest also reported issues with an unresponsive butler regarding AC.
  • Third-Party Excursions: A negative experience was reported with a third-party excursion to La Paz, which was significantly longer and less intimate than advertised.
  • Noise: The hotel can be on a flight path, leading to occasional noise. Additionally, some guests mentioned noise from bars, restaurants, or DJs, recommending higher floors in buildings closer to the beach to mitigate this.
  • Construction Noise: One guest reported their balcony was unusable due to tile cutting for a rooftop project during their stay.
  • No Ocean Swimming: While beachfront, the strong and rough surf means the ocean is generally not safe for swimming directly in front of the resort.
  • AC Issues: One reviewer noted their room was "boiling" upon arrival and the AC struggled to cool it down.
  • Scam Allegations: One detailed account on Reddit described feeling scammed regarding pricing discrepancies between their booking confirmation and what was charged upon arrival, along with a perceived unhelpful management response. The user has asked for a comprehensive hotel review of Viceroy Los Cabos, a Michelin Key One-Keys property. We had an excellent stay here in mid February and I would highly recommend staying here. This area is more laid back than Cabo San Lucas and has a nice downtown area that is walkable and safe, with some really great restaurants to visit when you want to leave the resort. The restaurants on the resort, the service, and the beaches were all great. Beaches here are not swimmable but they are walkable...

Viceroy didn't let us down the first time and it certainly didn't let us down the second time we visited. The first time we went to the Viceroy was just my wife and I. It was such an incredible experience that we decided to take back our 1.5yr old son for him to enjoy the bliss that we enjoyed. While it might have not been a relaxing vacation due to watching a 1.5yr old, the staff could not have b...

A stunning resort. The modern architecture is sublime, beautiful and peaceful. The way water is integrated into the space is transporting. Roberto and Jennifer were extremely warm, welcoming and helpful. The entire staff is also very friendly and hospitable. The onsite dining is good. My one negative is the beds are uncomfortable. We asked for a mattress topper which helped but not enough. The res...

We recently spent 4 nights at this exceptional hotel. The facilities are amazing with spacious rooms, beautifully maintained grounds, fabulous pools, a relaxing spa and numerous restaurant choices. Great hotel. Service was impeccable top to bottom capped by our butler Victor. He took care of any/all needs in a thoughtful, proactive and prompt manner. Hotel is a great design and the grounds were immaculate. Room was very spacious with awesome view of the sea and pools. Food and drinks were A+. Great location to walk or quick taxi into town.
