Expert Review: Gild Hall

Gild Hall, a Thompson Hotel in New York City, stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property offering a blend of luxury, comfort, and distinctive character in the bustling Financial District. Guests consistently praise its inviting atmosphere, attentive staff, and convenient location.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Gild Hall generally receives very positive feedback, with guests describing it as a pleasant hotel with a lot of character. It holds a 4.5-star rating from over 976 reviewers on Google Maps and 4.2 stars from 285 reviewers on Yelp, indicating a strong overall satisfaction. The sentiment is largely positive, highlighting a blend of trendy design, delightful service, and comfortable accommodations.

Key Highlights

Guests frequently highlight several aspects that make Gild Hall a cherished stay:

  • Service & Staff: The staff is consistently described as "friendly and helpful," with many guests appreciating their personable approach.
  • Location: Its prime location in the Financial District (FiDi), just steps from Wall Street, One World Trade Center, and the South Street Seaport, is a major draw for both business and leisure travelers. It's also well-connected to public transport, offering easy access to various subway lines.
  • Design: The hotel boasts a unique design aesthetic, inspired by an Aspen country house, with a lobby that evokes a ski lodge feel. Interiors showcase mid-century modern expert Jim Walrod's design and the photography of Slim Aarons, creating a stylish and sophisticated ambiance. The split-level library and champagne bar, complete with fully-functioning books and clubby leather sofas, add to its character.
  • Amenities: While specific extensive amenities aren't broadly detailed, the hotel offers a sophisticated environment with a restaurant and wine bar. Guests can also reportedly use a nearby Crunch Fitness for a fee.

Room Quality

Rooms at Gild Hall are typically described as spacious, nicely appointed, and comfortable. They feature a "somewhat swanky" feel with dark, masculine colors and leather headboards. While some rooms might be described as a bit dark in color and lighting, this is often seen as part of the chic Thompson hotel aesthetic. Plush furnishings and modern amenities contribute to a luxurious and comfortable stay, with some rooms boasting stunning marble-floored bathrooms. Soft pillows are a noted comfort. Complimentary bottled water is provided, and minibars are stocked with various items, including surprisingly, McBride Sisters wine.

Dining Experience

Gild Hall's restaurant, Felice Ristorante, is an outpost of a popular Upper East Side establishment, serving Italian cuisine in a rustic-glam style with vintage Italian photos. Felice offers outdoor dining for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is available through in-room delivery. The hotel also features La Soffitta, a discreetly tucked-away wine bar on the second floor, showcasing Italian wines.

Service & Staff

The service at Gild Hall consistently receives high praise. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "friendly and helpful," making stays, even solo business trips, feel less lonely. Interactions at check-in and throughout the stay are described as friendly and polite, with staff readily offering assistance like directions. This attentive and personable service is a recurring positive theme in guest feedback.

Location & Accessibility

Located on Gold and Platt Street in the heart of the Financial District, Gild Hall offers excellent accessibility. It's a short walk to the Fulton Street Station, providing access to multiple subway lines (2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, and Z), making it convenient to reach almost any part of the city. Key attractions such as Wall Street, One World Trade Center, the South Street Seaport, and the Brooklyn Bridge are within easy walking distance. The immediate surroundings are generally described as quiet, despite being in a bustling area.

Value & Pricing

Gild Hall is considered to offer good value for its quality, particularly given its location. Room rates typically range from $180 to $330 per night. As a Hyatt Category 4 property (or Category 5 as per a more recent review), it's also a popular choice for redeeming World of Hyatt points (15,000 to 20,000 points per night) or annual free-night certificates. For longer stays, the hotel may offer a "long-term stay" rate for seven nights or more.

Common Complaints

While overall satisfaction is high, a few recurring minor issues have been noted by guests:

  • Noise: Some guests have mentioned being able to hear activity in the hallways, such as doors opening and closing.
  • Air Conditioning: The wall-unit air conditioning, particularly in summer, can produce some white noise.
  • Seating in Rooms: Some larger rooms may only have a desk chair for seating, which can be a slight disappointment for those seeking additional lounge areas.
  • Bathtub Depth: One review wished for a deeper bathtub, though this was noted as a minor point.

Really enjoyed my stay. Those working the front desk were kind and attentive. When I needed some feminine products, they had some sent to my room without any questions! The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The location is great - right around the corner from the Fulton St stop or a short walk to Wall St.

It has a very cozy, old school New York vibe combined with a mountain feel. The hospitality and service were fantastic. The hotel was very clean and easy to navigate. Anything I needed, the staff was extremely helpful. ROB and BEN at the front desk we...

Guild Hall, a Thompson Hotel is an absolute gem. The staff is excellent, genuinely attentive, warm, and professional from check-in to check-out. The rooms are spotless, the hotel itself is very clean, and the overall atmosphere feels welcoming rather than corporate or cold. This is easily one of my favorite hotels under the Hyatt umbrella and my go-to spot in Manhattan. It strikes that rare bala...

BEST HOTEL EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! I don’t think I’ll be able to emphasize enough how much I enjoyed my stay here; I’ll probably end up leaving something amazing out. THE STAFF like wow everyone was so so kind and accommodating at the front desk. I was brought almond milk from the kitchen (without asking!!) for the lovely Nespresso machine. Such a life saver. I asked for an extra blanket— it was at my...

The hotel is old and very dark inside - but generally clean. Due to the age of the building, the bathroom was very basic and only equipped with a shower curtain. The rooms are extremely small and not comfortable enough to spend any real time in. This hotel is definitely not suitable for people with allergies. The air conditioning system was not only loud but also blew dust into the room and had a...

Simply phenomenal hotel at an extremely good price point. We booked using Amex, which came with free breakfast and $100 credit to use towards anything. Let me tell you, I was blown away by the value of this hotel. In the past I stayed closer to time square due to work, and hotel rooms there were crammed and sometimes exceeded 400 with 0 extras. Here, rooms are large for nyc, bottles of water were ...
