Expert Review: The Shilla Jeju

The Shilla Jeju, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, stands as a beacon of luxury and serenity on Jeju Island, offering a refined resort experience amidst breathtaking natural beauty. Praised for its impeccable service, extensive facilities, and scenic location, it consistently receives high marks from guests seeking a relaxing and upscale getaway.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Shilla Jeju enjoys an overwhelmingly positive reputation, frequently rated as "Exceptional" with an average score of 9.2 out of 10 from over 13,000 reviews on platforms like Agoda.com. Similarly, Booking.com shows an "Excellent" rating of 8.8. Many loyal guests express such strong satisfaction that they "go to Jeju just to stay at the Shilla Hotel." The hotel is widely considered a top-tier luxury resort, offering a blend of classic elegance and modern amenities.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Shilla Jeju for several standout features. The hotel boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, providing a tranquil and picturesque environment with panoramic views of the coast and Jeju's volcanic landscape. Its extensive range of leisure facilities is a significant draw, including multiple swimming pools (indoor, outdoor, heated, adult-only, and family pools), a luxurious spa, sauna, hot tub, and a lively poolside bar. The direct access to Jungmun Beach and proximity to the scenic Olle trail are also highly appreciated. For families, the hotel offers excellent amenities such as a kids' club, playroom, and infant item rentals.

Room Quality

The hotel offers 429 spacious and well-appointed rooms, many featuring balconies or terraces with mountain, ocean, or garden views. Rooms are equipped with modern comforts including air conditioning, flat-screen cable TV, a mini-bar, in-room safe, bottled water, premium bedding, pillow menus, designer toiletries, and deep soaking tubs. While generally having a modern, international style with a muted neutral palette and warm woods, some premier terrace rooms incorporate traditional Korean elements like ondol (heated) floors and window screens, adding a subtle local character. Guests frequently comment on the high standard of cleanliness and comfort, with "room comfort and quality" rated 9.1 on Agoda.

Dining Experience

The Shilla Jeju provides a diverse culinary journey with six dining options. Highlights include Cheonjee for traditional Korean set meals, Hinode for Japanese cuisine (both typically dinner-only), and The Park View, an all-day buffet renowned for its extensive breakfast, brunch, and dinner spreads featuring international, Asian, and local dishes, including seafood and salads. The quality of food is generally highly praised, with some guests finding it superior to offerings at other luxury hotels. A memorable night can also be had at the hotel's bar, which often features live music, or at the poolside bar offering casual fare. While the buffet breakfast is highly recommended, it comes with an additional charge of approximately 70,000 KRW for adults if not included in the room rate.

Service & Staff

Exceptional service is a hallmark of The Shilla Jeju. Guests consistently describe the staff as "top-notch," "impeccable," "professional and attentive," and "friendly and very helpful." Many reviewers specifically highlight the staff's respectful attitude and readiness to cater to guest requests, contributing significantly to a pleasant stay. The multilingual staff, proficient in languages like English and Mandarin Chinese, further enhances the experience for international visitors. The dedication to hospitality is a key reason for the hotel's strong guest loyalty and Michelin Key selection.

Location & Accessibility

The Shilla Jeju is strategically situated within the Jungmun Resort Complex on the southern coast of Jeju Island, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Its location provides direct access to Jungmun Beach (a 10-minute walk) and the beautiful Olle walking trails. Popular attractions such as the Yeomiji Botanical Garden, Jusangjeolli Cliff, and Osulloc Tea Museum are easily accessible by car. While the hotel is approximately a 50 to 90-minute drive from Jeju International Airport, an convenient airport limousine bus service (Bus No. 601) operates every 50 minutes, stopping directly at the hotel gates. The hotel also offers free parking and car hire services, making it a good base for exploring the island. It is considered more of a "country resort break" rather than a city experience, with limited external dining options in the immediate vicinity.

Value & Pricing

As a luxury resort, The Shilla Jeju commands premium pricing. A standard room can range from approximately $175 to $210 USD, with suites starting around $735 USD. While guests generally rate "value for money" positively (9.2 on Agoda, 8.2 on Booking.com), some feel that there can be "nickel and diming on everything," such as charges for breakfast if not included in the room rate, and rental fees for certain poolside amenities. However, for many, the exceptional service, extensive facilities, and overall experience justify the cost.

Common Complaints

Despite its high ratings, some recurring issues are mentioned by guests. Strict pool rules and policies, including mandated 30-minute cleaning breaks every 1.5 hours and height restrictions for children requiring life jackets even if they can swim, have been noted as inconvenient. The pool area, while beautiful, can feel "small for such a big resort" and become crowded. Some guests have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of complimentary poolside seating, with beach chairs often requiring rental. Occasional reports of inflexibility from staff regarding specific requests, such as airport pick-up not being included, have also surfaced. While the rooms are of high quality, some reviewers find their "Western-style" and modern decor to "lack a little character" compared to more distinctively Korean designs. Additionally, the outdoor "Urban Island" pool is reportedly closed for about six months of the year.

Beautiful resort in Jeju Island. Room booked: Premier Double Mountain. Date of stay: Late October. Pros: - Beautiful room. - Nice location near the beach. - Helpful staff. - The buffet breakfast here is good. Cons: - The price is high. - Amenities that are typically free as a standard are offered here at a price. Overall, it is a good option.

Rooms and the staff are fantastic. Everything costs extra. not only are the rooms expensive but they tack on charges to access any and all amenities. Wanna hit the sauna? 20,000krw per entry for example. Next time I will look for a less expensive option as the cheaper hotels we stayed offered far more free amenities but had less comfortable beds. If you don’t value your money this place i...

Great rooms and facilities. Rooms need more power outlets in easy to reach places for charging devices. Free yoga in the pool was fun. One instructor excellent, one not so good. Pools a bit small for peak times.

Service is fine. Always felt that it was a little bit of an inconvenience to ask for help from folks. At night there was always a repeat of the same kidsbop style music singing. Rooms were old. Please see photos.

One of the most prestigious Resorts in Jeju. Building is la bit old-fashioned, however service quality and location are beyond comparison. I really enjoyed staying here.

We booked the Shilla for 3 nights as a real treat when visiting Jeju island and it was disappointing. The pool facilities were too small for the number of guests and charging for beds by adult pool outrageous. Room was lovely. Porters at front door very unhelpful when trying to park for a quick change of clothes as car park was full. Not value for money as a bit dated.
