Expert Review: The Putman

The Putman on Hong Kong Island stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property, offering a luxurious and spacious boutique hotel apartment experience in the heart of Hong Kong's vibrant Central district. Designed by renowned designer Andrée Putman, it combines refined aesthetics with practical living, making it a highly regarded choice for discerning travelers.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Putman is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "amazing" and "excellent." Review platforms show high ratings for location (9.4), staff (9.1), comfort (9.0), and cleanliness (8.9). Guests often express a desire to return and recommend it for both business and leisure.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Putman for its exceptional space, professional service, and prime location. The unique "full-floor suite" concept offers unparalleled privacy and a sense of a "home away from home," a rarity in Hong Kong. The Art Deco-inspired design, coupled with floor-to-ceiling windows, creates an airy and light-filled environment with impressive city and sometimes harbor views. High-end in-suite amenities, including fully equipped kitchens, are also a significant draw.

Room Quality

The rooms at The Putman are primarily luxurious and spacious suites, many occupying an entire floor, a significant advantage over typical Hong Kong hotel rooms. These full-floor suites are approximately 1,300 sq ft (120 sq meters) and feature chic neutral decorations. Key features include:

  • Design: Modern, contemporary style with light wood and shades of gray, tan, and white.
  • Windows: Floor-to-ceiling windows extend the width of the building, offering stunning city views and abundant natural light. Blackout blinds are also provided.
  • Comfort: Branded bed linens (Frette), comfortable Simmons mattresses, and white goose down duvets and pillows ensure a good night's sleep.
  • Amenities: Each suite includes a living and dining area, flat-screen TVs with entertainment systems, Nespresso machines, electric kettles, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
  • Kitchens: Fully equipped kitchens are a standout feature, complete with a hob, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher, and washer/dryer, offering flexibility for longer stays.
  • Bathrooms: Luxurious bathrooms boast rainfall showers and stand-alone bathtubs (Villeroy & Boch), hand-laid Italian tiles, and high-quality MALIN+GOETZ refillable toiletries.

Dining Experience

While The Putman is primarily a serviced apartment-style hotel, it does offer a cafe, an elegant restaurant, and a chic bar on-site. Breakfast is available, with Western-style options. However, a major highlight for guests is the hotel's location within a "gastronomic paradise." Numerous renowned restaurants catering to various cuisines, from traditional Cantonese to international flavors, are just steps away.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at The Putman consistently receive glowing reviews. Guests describe them as highly professional, welcoming, helpful, attentive, and extremely friendly. Specific mentions highlight staff going "above and beyond" to assist guests, with one concierge, Eddie, being particularly noted for his helpfulness. Daily housekeeping services are also provided.

Location & Accessibility

The Putman boasts an "excellent" and "superb" location in Hong Kong's vibrant Central district, making it a prime spot for both business and leisure. It is strategically situated between two popular neighborhoods:

  • Sheung Wan: To the west, known for antique markets, ancient temples, and diverse dining options. Sheung Wan MTR Station is just a 3-minute walk away.
  • Soho: To the east, offering a bustling nightlife, tourist-friendly dining, and entertainment.

Key attractions and transport links nearby include:

  • IFC, Lan Kwai Fong, and SOHO (within a few minutes' walk).
  • Easy access to the MTR network, including Sheung Wan, Central, and Admiralty stations.
  • Walking distance to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal.
  • Proximity to Hong Kong Park, the Peak Tram, and other cultural landmarks.

Value & Pricing

The Putman is considered a worthwhile investment, offering exceptional value for the generous space and stylish accommodations it provides, especially when compared to typically smaller hotel rooms in Hong Kong. While the average room price of approximately $426 USD might be higher than the city's average, the full-floor suites and apartment-style living justify the cost for many. Serviced apartment pricing for 1-bedroom apartments is around HK$70K to HK$85K per month.

Common Complaints

While overall sentiment is positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Maintenance/Age: A few guests have mentioned that some items in the room seemed "a bit dated or older" with minor scuffs, and that the facilities felt "old" compared to a few years prior.
  • Noise: Some reviews cited issues with air conditioning noise from their own room or even from other rooms, as well as general poor sound insulation.
  • Bathroom Outlets: A noticeable lack of outlets in bathrooms for shavers or hairdryers has been mentioned.
  • Value Perception (Minority): A small number of negative reviews expressed strong dissatisfaction, feeling the price did not justify the quality, citing issues like uncomfortable or dirty bedding, small and poorly equipped rooms, and a lack of proper bathroom facilities for the price point.

Fantastic location, very clean room and professional staff. The staff was very considerate with us as we were traveling with a toddler. Gave us early check in per our request. Room service staff also does a fabulous jobs. Minor issues exist with conditions of property but that’s true about a lot of other top notch hotels or Airbnbs. Room sizes are large by Hong Kong standards

This aparthotel is honestly the only place you should think about staying in HK. Firstly the location couldn't be more ideal, walkable to everywhere. Secondly the apartments are huge and not huge for HK standards, they are huge with all the amenities needed. Furthermore, it was well decorated and bright/ airy. I personally wanted to stay in a aparthotel rather than a hotel as my trip was 4 day...
