Expert Review: The Peninsula Beverly Hills

The Peninsula Beverly Hills, a distinguished Michelin Two-Key property, consistently garners praise for its opulent ambiance, exceptional service, and prime location in the heart of Beverly Hills. It is recognized for providing an "exceptional stay" and an "ultimate comfort, service, style and elegance" experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Peninsula Beverly Hills is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as an exceptional and luxurious experience. It holds a Michelin Two-Key rating, signifying an "exceptional stay". Reviewers often highlight the hotel's ability to combine grand-scale luxury with an intimate, residential feel, making guests feel like family. Some recent reviews, however, indicate a decline in service and cleanliness.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several key aspects of The Peninsula Beverly Hills:

  • Exceptional Service: The hotel is renowned for its "old-school commitment to service," with staff often knowing guests by name and anticipating their needs. Personalized touches, such as embroidered initials on pillows, are also noted.
  • Prime Location: Situated in a private part of Beverly Hills, it offers a serene escape while being within walking distance of Rodeo Drive and Century City.
  • Luxury Amenities: The rooftop pool with cabanas, a tranquil spa, and a well-equipped gym are highly appreciated. The complimentary car service, often a Rolls-Royce or BMW, for transport within a 3-4km radius (including Rodeo Drive), is a significant highlight.
  • Elegant Design: The hotel's Renaissance-style architecture and lush gardens contribute to a magical and opulent atmosphere. The interior is described as classic, refined, and sophisticated.
  • Acclaimed Dining: The various restaurants, particularly The Belvedere and The Living Room, are celebrated for their quality and ambiance, with the afternoon tea being a notable favorite.

3. Room Quality

The Peninsula Beverly Hills offers 195 guest rooms, including 38 suites and 18 private villas, all noted for being larger than standard rooms in the area. Rooms are described as luxurious, yet homely and inviting, with a classic, refined, and sophisticated design featuring colorful touches of pinks, creams, blues, and greens.

  • Comfort: Beds, often custom-made Sealy mattresses with Frette sheets, are consistently praised for their comfort.
  • Technology: Rooms are well-appointed with subtle use of technology, including bedside control panels for climate and lighting.
  • Bathrooms: Marble bathrooms are sumptuously outfitted, often including a separate soaking tub. Oscar de la Renta bath products are typically provided.
  • Design & Features: Many rooms have French doors leading to a balcony, and villas offer more privacy with private entrances. Some guests have found the overall feel of the rooms to be "fusty" or not as modern as other Peninsula properties, particularly regarding a lack of rain showers and only one sink in some bathrooms.
  • Personalization: Unique touches like personalized embroidered pillows are a hallmark of the Peninsula brand.

4. Dining Experience

The Peninsula Beverly Hills boasts three restaurants and a bar, all considered legendary in Beverly Hills.

  • The Belvedere: This signature European brasserie offers a beautiful terrace setting and charming indoor area, serving excellent à la carte dishes for breakfast and dinner. It's also a classic power-lunch destination. Highlights have included the Charred Spanish Octopus.
  • The Living Room: Known for its superlative afternoon tea, this sophisticated lounge offers a comfortable and elegant dining option with a harpist during teatime and a pianist in the evenings. Guests laud the traditional high tea experience, including delicious sandwiches, pastries, and fresh, warm scones.
  • The Roof Garden: A favorite with guests, this casual restaurant by the rooftop pool offers outstanding views of downtown LA, Century City, and the Hollywood Hills. It serves Californian dishes and is a popular spot for poolside dining. During summer weekends, a BBQ is often available.
  • The Club Bar: A discreet, cozy, and timeless spot for a nightcap.

5. Service & Staff

The Peninsula Beverly Hills is celebrated for its "friendly staff" and "old-school commitment to service," where "above and beyond is the norm." Guests frequently mention staff members knowing them by name, efficient check-in, and attentive service in restaurants. The hotel is also very dog-friendly, offering dog beds, bowls, and a dog menu. Employees often stay for decades, contributing to the consistent experience and familiar faces for repeat clientele.

However, some recent reviews have cited "surprisingly rude and unaccommodating staff," "dismissive attitudes," and "poor attention to detail" from serving staff, particularly in the restaurants and at the front desk. There are also mentions of "poor upper management" and staff being "spread too thin."

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel is located at 9882 South Santa Monica Boulevard in a very private part of Beverly Hills, nestled amongst lush gardens. This prime location offers easy walking access to Rodeo Drive for shopping and Century City. The hotel's complimentary car service, often in a Rolls-Royce or BMW, provides convenient transport within Beverly Hills and Century City, offering guests a "rock star treatment." It's approximately a 20-25 minute drive from LAX without traffic, though it can be much longer in heavy traffic.

7. Value & Pricing

Beverly Hills accommodation is generally not cheap, and The Peninsula Beverly Hills is positioned at the "Eastern end of grand-scale luxury." While prices are high (e.g., a one-night stay for two adults can start from over $1,000), many guests believe the décor, facilities, and the overall experience make it worthwhile. The value for money is rated around 7.9 out of 10 by some guests. The hotel is considered worth the cost by those seeking a truly luxurious experience.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues and criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Service Inconsistencies: Despite overall high praise for service, some recent reviews mention instances of rude or unaccommodating staff, particularly at the front desk and in restaurants.
  • Cleanliness Issues: Specific complaints include dirty kettles with mold and carelessly left cleaning wipes.
  • Incorrect Billing: Guests have reported being incorrectly charged for services, such as breakfast they did not have, at check-out.
  • Room Amenities: Some guests find the rooms to be "fusty" or not as modern as expected for a luxury hotel, specifically noting the absence of in-room Nespresso machines or rain shower heads in all bathrooms.
  • Pest Concerns: There have been isolated complaints of cockroaches and bees in rooms.
  • Noise: One guest mentioned being able to hear music from a private event on a terrace.

I had the opportunity to stay in one of the suites here and by golly how nice! Garden view and everything! And the bathroom is like a hotel room itself! Loved the Oscar de la renta amenities too. Take me back!!! Haha. Oh but for real for real the best thing here is the afternoon tea service! Book it in advance because it is always full! Love thanks Peninsula - you're always a doll.

Had afternoon tea in The Living Room. Reservations are required. The service and food were just wonderful. So relaxing and fancy at the same time. Really consider adding the endless bubble (champagne) option.

Our staycation at The Peninsula Beverly Hills was nothing short of extraordinary and truly one of the most memorable hotel experiences we have had. We recently spent several nights at The Peninsula New York over New Year’s, right in the heart of Manhattan near Saks and Rockefeller Center. We have also previously stayed at the St. Regis and the Ritz Carlton, so we have high standards. After such an...

Save yourself you are not welcome here 👎 SKIP IT AND STAY AT THE MAYBOURNE BEVERLY HILLS. 🤮 At 3:00 AM I was woken up by a group of women next door screaming and partying. I called the front desk twice. Nothing changed for 45 minutes. I could hear full conversations, yelling, and chaos through the walls like they were inside my room. The soundproofing here is unacceptable for a hotel at this pr...

Update: management was nice and tried to address issue. I really hope this trrrible concierge gets fired though. 4 star Used to be amazing. Sadly service has declined significantly over the last 5 years. Especially concierge — extremely rude lady. Treated our group and my wife so bad. Unfortunate — we booked 2 suites and 3 rooms for our group. Breakfast staff amazing though!
