Expert Review: The Merrion

The Merrion Hotel in Dublin, Ireland, a prestigious Michelin Key Two-Keys property, consistently garners high praise for its blend of Georgian elegance, exceptional service, and prime location. It is frequently cited as one of Dublin's most luxurious and discreet five-star hotels.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Merrion is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing their stays as "just wonderful," "amazing and perfect," and "exceptional." The hotel maintains a luxurious and traditional atmosphere, where every detail is meticulously considered.

Key Highlights

Guests particularly love The Merrion for its outstanding service, central yet discreet location, and exquisite Georgian design. The hotel's impressive art collection, featuring works by renowned Irish artists, adds to its sophisticated ambiance. Amenities such as the full-service spa, beautiful Roman-style indoor pool, and well-maintained classical gardens are also highly appreciated. Many guests highlight the tranquility and elegance the hotel offers, making it an oasis of calm in the city.

Room Quality

The Merrion offers 142 guestrooms and suites, divided between the Main House and the Garden Wing. Rooms are sumptuously furnished with Georgian decor, featuring premium bedding, air conditioning, minibars, and espresso makers. Guests frequently commend the spaciousness and elegant design of the rooms, with many offering city or garden views. Bathrooms are often adorned with Italian marble, offering luxury toiletries (such as Asprey London products), bathrobes, and separate bathtubs and showers. Thoughtful details like complimentary bottled water, complimentary on-demand movies, and local Irish tea are also noted. While most rooms are highly praised, some older reviews mention that certain Garden Wing Superior Rooms could be less luxurious, with smaller bathrooms lacking rain showers or separate toilet chambers.

Dining Experience

The Merrion is a culinary destination, boasting a range of excellent dining options.

  • Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud: This is Ireland's only restaurant to hold two Michelin stars, offering a fine-dining experience with contemporary Irish cuisine.
  • The Garden Room: This all-day dining restaurant provides a less formal setting with modern Irish cuisine, often featuring a stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the gardens.
  • The Cellar Bar: Housed in the hotel's original 18th-century wine vaults, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with a gastro-pub menu and is a popular spot for drinks.
  • No. 23: An intimate cocktail bar known for its clubby ambiance and extensive whiskey selection.
  • Afternoon Tea: Served in the elegant Drawing Rooms, particularly inviting with open log fires during colder months. Guests consistently praise the quality of the food and drinks, from delicious dinners to hearty buffet breakfasts. The freshly baked pastries and breads for breakfast are often highlighted.

Service & Staff

The service at The Merrion is frequently described as "truly outstanding," "attentive," "kind," and "impeccable." With a significant staff-to-guest ratio, the hotel provides a highly personalized and discreet experience, where staff anticipate needs without being intrusive. Guests feel like VIPs, regardless of their public profile. Staff are noted for being friendly, welcoming, and going above and beyond expectations.

Location & Accessibility

The Merrion boasts an "extremely central" and convenient location in Georgian Dublin, making it ideal for exploring the city. It is situated on Upper Merrion Street, directly opposite Government Buildings. Key attractions within a short walking distance include:

  • St. Stephen's Green (2-minute walk)
  • Merrion Square (3-minute walk)
  • Trinity College Dublin (10-13 minute walk)
  • Grafton Street (6-10 minute walk)
  • National Gallery of Ireland (5-minute walk) Public transportation, including St. Stephen's Green Station and Dawson Tram Stop, is easily accessible. While parking is available (for a fee, including valet), guests often recommend against a rental car due to the hotel's central location and walkability. The hotel is also committed to accessibility, with trained staff and accessible rooms.

Value & Pricing

While The Merrion is a luxury five-star hotel, it is often considered "well worth the price" by guests. Some reviews even suggest it is "pretty affordable" considering its status as one of Dublin's best hotels, with rooms starting around 200 euros per night (though this can vary significantly based on room type and season). Special offers, such as dinner, bed, and breakfast packages with champagne, have been noted as incredible value.

Common Complaints

Recurring complaints are infrequent for The Merrion, with many guests stating there was "nothing to dislike." However, a few minor criticisms have been noted in older reviews:

  • Breakfast inclusion: Some guests feel that breakfast should be included in the room rate rather than being an "add on."
  • Garden Wing rooms: One older review mentioned a "Superior Twin Room in the Garden Wing" as being "rather dim" and not feeling as luxurious, with a small bathroom lacking a separate toilet chamber or rain shower.
  • Cellar Bar atmosphere: One guest found the Cellar Bar to lack atmosphere compared to the restaurant and upstairs bar.
  • Gym size: The gym is sometimes noted as being on the smaller side.
  • Views: Some rooms may have unremarkable views of other buildings.

Nice hotel. The concierge team are very helpful and friendly. The room was clean and bed comfortable. The only improvement is that the little things they could do a little better such as personal touches when entering the room such as notes or welcome messages and also the turn down service is slightly lacking with no chocolates left. The room felt just above a 4 star - but maybe that’s because it...

I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding celebration at The Merrion Hotel in Dublin, where the couple enjoyed afternoon tea with their guests. The presentation was exquisite, with the menu inspired by the hotel’s art collection, a beautiful and creative touch that made the experience feel even more unique. Between the sweeping staircase and the elegant Georgian features, it’s an incredible b...

Great stay at the Merrion with beautiful rooms and romantic atmosphere. However, given the high nightly rate, it was disappointing to encounter different tiers of breakfast options (continental, Irish breakfast, and à la carte) rather than a fully inclusive offering. At a hotel of this calibre, breakfast typically feels generous and seamless, without distinctions or supplements. Additionally, the ...

Very nice hotel, personnel very polite, located in the city center. I ate twice at the hotel restaurant and enjoyed the vegan options of the chef, both at dinner and breakfast, really good tasting. I recommend the restaurant and encourage the chef to add also another vegan option to the menu.

Stopped by for cocktails on the recommendation of one of our party who has stayed here before. Quiet, unassuming luxury. We would have stayed longer and tried the food offerings but we already had a booking elsewhere with the rest of our group. Will visit again if (when) we come back to Dublin.

We had afternoon tea at The Merrion Hotel today, something my partner and I make a point of doing every year around this time. While the room was noticeably lacking in Christmas atmosphere, it’s still the Merrion—elegant and refined by default. We were seated near the fire, which was a lovely touch. The service was good and attentive throughout. However, there’s an access kitchen at the side of t...
