Expert Review: The Marlton Hotel
The Marlton Hotel in New York City, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its unique charm, prime Greenwich Village location, and sophisticated design, though guests frequently note its famously compact rooms.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Marlton Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing it as a "super boutique hotel" and a "gem." It boasts strong guest feedback scores, including an 18.8/20 for Overall Stay on Tablet Hotels and Michelin Guide, and an "Excellent" rating of 8.9 on Agoda. Many appreciate its "old-world style" and "Parisian-inspired way," making it a popular choice for those valuing character and location over expansive space.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly fond of the hotel's distinctive "vibe" and design, often likened to a "baby Bowery" but with a cozier, more residential feel. The lobby, featuring a fireplace and bookshelves, is a central highlight, described as an "inspiring relaxed hub" where guests can comfortably work or relax. The hotel's excellent location in Greenwich Village and its acclaimed restaurant and bar are also frequently cited as major attractions.
3. Room Quality
The Marlton's rooms are consistently described as "petite" or "tiny," typically ranging from 100 to 150 square feet for standard rooms. Despite their small size, they are considered charming, well-appointed, and clean, featuring herringbone wood floors, crown moldings, and brass fixtures. Bathrooms are often marble, equipped with complimentary toiletries, hair dryers, and either bathtubs or showers. Beds are comfortable with down comforters, and rooms include minibars stocked with local products, LED televisions with cable channels, and complimentary WiFi. However, storage space is minimal, and some rooms may lack desks or chairs, with certain units offering less desirable views or experiencing hallway noise.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's on-site restaurant, Margaux (also known as Chez Nous), is a significant draw, serving "market-driven French, Mediterranean and California-style dishes." It's praised for its richly atmospheric dining rooms, characterized by warm lighting, dark woods, and plush leather banquettes, with some guests feeling it's a destination in itself. Complimentary breakfast is served daily, and there's also a coffee shop/cafe and a classic, clubby bar that's popular with both guests and locals. While the food generally receives good remarks, some guests have noted slow service and an average quality for breakfast.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at The Marlton Hotel are widely praised as friendly, helpful, and exceptional, contributing to a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere. Guests have highlighted the staff's attentiveness and kindness. However, a few reviews mention instances where staff were not particularly welcoming or appeared overloaded, leading to slow service, particularly at breakfast.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Marlton Hotel boasts an "incredible" and "perfect" location in the heart of Greenwich Village. It is ideally situated just a short walk from Washington Square Park (approximately 2 minutes or 528 feet), New York University (NYU), and various shops and eateries. The hotel offers excellent accessibility to public transport, with the West 4th Street and 8th Street subway stations within a 5-minute walk, making many major attractions easily reachable. The property also complies with ADA standards, offering accessible features for guests with disabilities.
7. Value & Pricing
While The Marlton Hotel is considered "realistically priced" for its style and prime location, some guests find the value for money to be an issue, especially considering the compact room sizes. Room prices can range widely, from approximately $255 to $1615 per night, with recent averages around $417-$444/night, which is slightly above the city's average of $372. Some guests have felt that the room quality and amenities provided did not fully justify the cost, particularly during peak seasons.
8. Common Complaints
The most consistent and significant complaint revolves around the small size of the rooms, with many guests expressing surprise at just how "tiny," "minuscule," or "shockingly small" they are, often lacking adequate storage, desk space, or even room for luggage stands. Related to this, some guests perceive the value for money as poor given the limited space. Other recurring criticisms include the lobby and bar areas becoming crowded with non-guests, making it difficult for hotel patrons to find seating. Noise levels from hallways and the street can also be an issue. The hotel lacks a dedicated fitness center or spa, and while New York's delivery services are plentiful, traditional room service is not available. Some minor complaints include a slow and tiny elevator, narrow stairs, occasional issues with room maintenance (e.g., drapes not shutting, lopsided mirrors, leaky showers), and slow breakfast service.

Convenient location away from the crazy hustle/bustle. Good - comfy bed and pillows, scenic bar and restaurant. Nice that the staff come and give you tap water if you’re working in the lobby. Room to improve - personal preference but didn’t enjoy how cramped the hotel felt. Steep narrow steps to get into the hotel + steep narrow stairwell to the rooms. Not suitable for buggies or children or any...

This hotel is warm and welcoming as soon as you enter. It has a beautiful style and history and set in a great location. The staff are so attentive and friendly. The food is lovely, and includes a complimentary breakfast. I would say the rooms are small but they have everything you need and are very cosy. Sadly my view was of a solid brick wall. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere in the evenings as...

The Marlton Hotel was the perfect stay for a girls trip to the city with my mom! The rooms were cute, beds comfortable and location was so perfect. We were walking distance from all of the friends we wanted to see and restaurants we wanted to try! It was also the perfect cozy location for meeting for drinks in the fireplace lounge, and enjoying the breakfast included with our stay. The premium cof...

I loved the feel and vibe of this cozy hotel. Lobby/restaurant/bar is amazing and food is wonderful. The rooms are tiny! Which I expected but are so tiny I didn’t really have room to open my luggage properly. I had to check out a day early (24hrs) due to a medical emergency of a family member and was disappointed to be denied a partial refund or credit for the unused night despite imploring twice...

What a wonderful weekend stay! Rooms are spotless and oh so charming. Lobby and restaurant are warm and cozy with plenty of seating options. Very nice served breakfast, not a messy buffet. Be sure to take it at the far end of the dining room with the Cecily Brown mural—amazing!! 6/5 will stay again.
