Expert Review: The Kumaon

The Kumaon, a distinguished one-Michelin Key property nestled in the serene hills of Almora, India, offers guests an exceptional retreat amidst the Himalayas. This boutique hotel is widely celebrated for its remarkable architecture, breathtaking views, and unparalleled service, making it a highly sought-after destination for luxury travelers seeking tranquility and a deep connection with nature.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Kumaon consistently receives "Excellent" to "Exceptional" ratings from guests, with scores often reaching 9.0 and above across various platforms. The general sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising the hotel for its serene atmosphere, luxurious accommodations, and the stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan range. Its inclusion in the Michelin Key selection further solidifies its reputation as a "very special stay" that offers a transformative guest experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several aspects that make The Kumaon stand out:

  • Service & Staff: The hospitality is described as "exceptional," "warm and friendly," "attentive," and "impeccable." Staff members are commended for making guests feel special and cared for.
  • Location & Views: The hotel's location in the Kasar Devi region, perched above Almora, offers "breathtaking views" and a "peaceful retreat" surrounded by natural beauty. It's an ideal spot for introspection and quietude.
  • Design & Architecture: Designed by Sri Lankan architects Pradeep Kodikara and Jineshi Samaraweera, disciples of Geoffrey Bawa, the property is an "extraordinary" example of "tropical modernism" adapted to a mountain setting. It features vast floor-to-ceiling windows that frame unforgettable vistas, raw concrete, stone walls, bamboo cladding, and hardwood accents. The construction emphasized hand-building and local materials, reflecting an eco-friendly and sustainable approach.
  • Amenities: Key amenities include a full-service spa offering massages, a restaurant, a library with a fireplace and board games, a garden, and a terrace. Complimentary WiFi and parking are provided, along with an area shuttle. The hotel is also pet-friendly (with an additional charge). Some mentions of an infinity pool exist, though it's not universally listed as a primary amenity across all sources.

3. Room Quality

The Kumaon comprises 10 luxurious suites, thoughtfully designed as "perfect little modernist jewel boxes." These spacious and elegantly furnished rooms offer a blend of modern aesthetics and traditional architecture. Each suite boasts floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize the stunning views, private balconies or patios, and traditional wood-burning bukharis for warmth. Guests appreciate the plush or premium bedding, spacious en-suite bathrooms with rain showers, and ample lounging space. The chalets are arranged in pairs across five structures; lower suites are built with locally quarried stone, while upper suites use fly-ash bricks, bamboo, and copper wire, each offering distinct charms.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant at The Kumaon offers a delightful culinary journey, serving a mix of Kumaoni and international cuisine. A highlight is the cantilevered dining room, which provides extraordinary, unmitigated views of the Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, making for a truly memorable meal. The kitchen emphasizes seasonal produce procured from nearby village farms and foraged from local forests. Guests frequently praise the food as "delicious," "homely," and "soul-satisfying," noting the authentic flavors of Kumaoni dishes like black soybean daal, bhaang chutney, and millet flatbreads. A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Kumaon is a standout feature, consistently rated as exceptional. Guests describe the staff as dedicated, friendly, attentive, and providing warm hospitality, making them feel special and well-cared for. From the seamless check-in process to housekeeping and kitchen staff, the team ensures a comfortable and memorable stay.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Kumaon is situated in the Kasar Devi region, a ridge above the historical city of Almora in Uttarakhand, approximately 375 kilometers north of Delhi. This remote location, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, offers a peaceful escape and proximity to nature. The nearest airport is Pantnagar (approximately 4-5 hours drive), and the closest railway station is Kathgodam.

While the location is celebrated for its serenity and views, it's important to note the accessibility. The property is fairly remote, and guests typically need to park their vehicles about 300-500 meters away, followed by a walk to reach the hotel. This may pose challenges for guests with mobility concerns or knee pain. Nearby attractions include the Kasar Devi Temple (10-minute drive) and the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its diverse flora and fauna, including leopards.

7. Value & Pricing

The Kumaon is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects the exclusive experience it offers. The average price for a room is around $434 (approximately INR 31,841 to INR 41,655) per night, which is significantly higher than the average hotel room price in Almora (around $66). Despite the higher cost, many guests consider it "worth every penny" due to the unparalleled luxury, impeccable service, and breathtaking views. Policies for children include free stays for those under 8, a charge of INR 2500 plus taxes per night for children aged 9-12, and INR 4500 plus taxes per night for guests 12+.

8. Common Complaints

While guest feedback is largely positive, a few recurring criticisms have been noted:

  • Meal Prices: Several guests have commented that the meal prices at the on-site restaurant can be "unreasonably high" for basic meals, despite the food quality being generally praised.
  • Accessibility: The walk from the parking area to the hotel, coupled with steps within the property, has been noted as inconvenient for some, particularly those with mobility issues or knee pain.
  • Rigid F&B Manager: One specific review mentioned a rigid and unaccommodating F&B manager regarding food requests.

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Kumaon, and what stood out most was the genuine care from the entire team—from even before we reached the hotel, throughout the stay, and the follow-up continued until we got back home safely. That level of attention is rare and deeply appreciated. A special thank you to the Manager, Mr. Abhinav, for handling everything so smoothly. Also, sincere thanks to Mr. Sura...

The rooms are amazing; I liked the industrial design, the super comfortable bed, and the fireplace, which I kept on all the time. The place is a bit remote and requires a car. The staff was very helpful and thoughtful of the guests' needs. The food can be better, though
