Expert Review: Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai
The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, a distinguished One-Key Michelin property, stands as an iconic symbol of luxury, history, and impeccable hospitality in India's bustling financial capital. Revered by guests worldwide, it consistently earns high praise for its grandeur and the unforgettable experiences it offers.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, is overwhelmingly positive, often described as an "exceptional" and "once-in-a-lifetime experience." It consistently receives high ratings, with a "Wonderful" 9.2 on Booking.com, 4.7/5 on MakeMyTrip, and 4.7/5 on Tripadvisor, cementing its status as a legendary five-star hotel.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud the hotel's outstanding hospitality and attentive service, making them feel "treated like royalty." Its historical significance and stunning Indo-Saracenic architecture are frequently highlighted, with the building itself being a captivating piece of art. The prime location, directly opposite the iconic Gateway of India and overlooking the Arabian Sea, is another major draw. The hotel boasts a beautiful design, a genuinely relaxing pool area, and a wide variety of excellent dining options. Many appreciate the complimentary heritage tour that offers a unique glimpse into the property's rich legacy.
3. Room Quality
Rooms at The Taj Mahal Palace are described as beautiful, extremely comfortable, and luxurious, featuring stylish Indian-inspired decor and architecture. Guests can choose between the historic Palace Wing, offering a heritage charm, and the Tower Wing, which provides more modern amenities. Each room is well-appointed with a 32-inch flat-screen TV, a well-stocked mini-bar, free WiFi, and a luxurious bathroom. Many rooms offer breathtaking sea, city, or pool views. While generally praised, some guests have noted that rooms can feel "a bit small" compared to other hotels or, in some instances, "slightly underwhelming" when contrasted with the hotel's overall grandeur. Minor issues like dirt in corners or outdated cupboards have also been mentioned.
4. Dining Experience
The Taj Mahal Palace offers a diverse and exquisite culinary journey across its numerous restaurants, including nine legendary bars and restaurants. Highlights include the innovative Japanese cuisine at Wasabi by Morimoto, gourmet Indian dishes at Masala Kraft, authentic Middle Eastern fare at Souk (with a notable rose petal ice cream), and Chinese specialties at Golden Dragon. Shamiana provides Indian and international cuisine, while the Sea Lounge is renowned for its Asian specialties, high tea, and breakfast with views of the Gateway of India. Breakfast is frequently praised as "excellent" and "superb," often featuring a wide variety of regional and local specialties. However, some guests have reported inconsistent service at the Sea Lounge during breakfast and found some of the food there, particularly pastas, to be "so so." Exclusive private dining experiences, some offering elaborate seven-course meals on 24K gold Versace plates, are also available.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at The Taj Mahal Palace are consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently use terms like "exceptional," "superb," "welcoming," "helpful," and "attentive." Many reviewers note that staff members go "above and beyond," often anticipating needs and providing personalized touches, reflecting a philosophy of treating guests "as god." A 24-hour butler service enhances the luxurious experience. Despite the overwhelming positive feedback, isolated incidents have been reported, such as "purly organised staff" in one instance and difficulties with airport transfer communication before arrival. More recent complaints include staff requesting non-staying guests to vacate lobby sofas and issues with valet service, suggesting occasional inconsistencies in guest interaction.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Taj Mahal Palace boasts an "excellent location," majestically situated opposite the iconic Gateway of India and offering splendid views of the Arabian Sea. It is within walking distance of major attractions like the Gateway of India and the National Gallery of Modern Art. The hotel provides easy access to the city by car or Uber. However, due to its popularity and security measures, the entrance area can sometimes become "pretty chaotic."
7. Value & Pricing
Staying at The Taj Mahal Palace is widely considered an expensive endeavor, with typical rates ranging from approximately ₹30,000 to over ₹51,850 per night, depending on the room category and booking period. Some guests have even "raised an eyebrow" at the prices in the bar. Despite the high cost, the majority of guests feel it offers excellent value for money, especially for those seeking a truly luxurious and memorable "once-in-a-lifetime" experience, appreciating the amenities and exceptional services provided.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring issues or criticisms emerge from guest feedback. Some find the strong incense or perfumes used throughout the hotel to be "too strong." Inconsistent service at breakfast in the Sea Lounge has been noted, and some guests found certain dishes there to be "so so." While rooms are generally comfortable, some found even the "luxury room" in the Palace Wing to be "slightly underwhelming" compared to the rest of the hotel, or "a bit small." Isolated issues with pre-arrival communication for airport transfers and a "purly organised staff" at times have been reported. More recent feedback mentions instances of staff asking non-staying guests to vacate lobby seating and issues with chaotic parking and valet services, indicating potential areas for improvement in guest experience management, particularly for non-resident diners. Minor cleanliness concerns like dirt in corners or outdated cupboards in rooms have also been mentioned.

I absolutely loved the hotel in every detail. The décor, the warm reception, and the cleanliness of the rooms were all exceptional, and the service was excellent. The atmosphere of the hotel was truly wonderful — I enjoyed every corner of it. The live music added a special charm, and I also had the chance to take a tour with Chef Adel. One of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had. There’s so much history behind this place as a cornerstone of Indian luxury in the colonial era. What stood out the most for me was the impeccable service and attention to detail. The sea-view room was great during the monsoons too, you get to see the waves splashing on the promenade. I will definitely be visiting again in the future.

My husband and I had the most wonderful time at the Taj Mahal Palace. The service is top notch, the property is beautiful, and their breakfast was so delicious. It was so relaxing to be able to come back to a calm, nice hotel after being out in the busyness of Mumbai. The massage was also one of the best massages I've had!

We had a Heritage Tour with Mr. Prabhakar Gokhale - he was wonderful! He had been a chef at Taj’s Sea Lounge for 45 years and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the hotel and its history. Highly recommend booking with him! Incredible stay at the hotel - excellent service, food (especially breakfast), and rooms. We will be coming back.
