The Grandtully Hotel by Ballintaggart: A Michelin One-Key Scottish Gem

The Grandtully Hotel by Ballintaggart, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property in Grandtully, United Kingdom, consistently earns accolades for its exceptional hospitality, culinary excellence, and stylish comfort. Guests frequently describe it as a "total joy" and a "hidden gem," offering a memorable experience in the heart of Perthshire.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Grandtully Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with a "Superb" rating of 9.1 out of 10 based on numerous reviews. It also boasts a strong 4.7 Google Rating. The Michelin One Key status signifies a "very special stay" characterized by high comfort and distinct personality, reflecting the hotel's commitment to an exceptional guest experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of the hotel. The service and staff are frequently highlighted as "tremendous" and "outstanding." The food and wine offerings are a major draw, often described as "brilliant," "divine," and "sensational." The hotel's charming and stylish design, coupled with its comfortable rooms and excellent location overlooking the River Tay, also contribute significantly to guest satisfaction. The focus on local, seasonal produce and an informal yet upmarket ambiance are also highly appreciated.

3. Room Quality

The eight rooms at The Grandtully Hotel are celebrated for their quality, comfort, and unique design. Each room is individually styled, avoiding a kitsch aesthetic while feeling locally rooted. Guests describe them as "charming," "stylish," "comfortable," and "well-appointed." Standard amenities include private bathrooms with walk-in showers and complimentary Noble Isle toiletries. Rooms also feature TVs and electric kettles, with some offering sofa beds or private balconies/terraces for enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Notable individual touches in certain rooms include record players with a selection of vinyls or luxurious roll-top baths.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at The Grandtully Hotel is a central and highly praised element of the stay, with the restaurant holding a prestigious 2 AA Rosette award. The cuisine is described as "Modern British" with a strong emphasis on "Scottish" and "seasonal" ingredients, often locally farmed or foraged. Guests can choose between a seven-course tasting menu (available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) and a more casual a la carte menu served in The Tully bar, which also offers "elevated pub food." Standout dishes have included salt and pepper squid, cured halibut, and excellent roast beef. Breakfast, often included with the stay, receives high praise for its quality, with mentions of fabulous granola, Ballintaggart sourdough, and a selection of dishes that showcase Perthshire produce. The bar offers an extensive selection of craft ales, gins (including their own), and a diverse wine list, with cocktails like the "Auld Fashioned" and Negronis being particular favorites.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff consistently receive glowing reviews, with a staff rating of 9.8 on Booking.com. They are frequently described as "tremendous," "friendly," "excellent," "welcoming," "attentive," "helpful," "knowledgeable," and "genuinely passionate." Many guests highlight how the staff go "the extra mile" to ensure a comfortable and cared-for experience, contributing significantly to the overall positive sentiment.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Grandtully Hotel is ideally situated in the picturesque village of Grandtully, within the Perthshire countryside. It is approximately an hour and a half's drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. The hotel overlooks the River Tay, providing opportunities for outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, and white-water rafting. Its rural location makes it an excellent base for exploring the "Heart of Scotland," with nearby attractions including Castle Menzies, Scone Palace, Blair Castle, and the Aberfeldy Golf Course. The nearest train station is in Pitlochry, about 10 miles away, and the hotel can arrange taxi pickups. Free on-site parking is available for guests.

7. Value & Pricing

The Grandtully Hotel is generally considered to offer "fantastic value" and "affordable luxury." Typical room rates average between $251 and $300 per night. While older promotions of midweek B&B offers at around £80 have been noted, current pricing reflects its Michelin Key status and the high quality of its offerings.

8. Common Complaints

While guest feedback is overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points have been noted. Some reviews mention that rooms, while comfortable and stylish, may not be "huge." One guest observed that their room overlooked a "slightly busy road," although they acknowledged the reasonable pricing for the overall experience. Accessibility can be a concern as the Victorian building is not easily accessible for wheelchair users. Additionally, the hotel's "fancy restaurant" (likely referring to the tasting menu experience) does not permit children under 14, although a children's menu is available in the bar. Guests should also be aware that the hotel has seasonal closures, typically on Mondays and Tuesdays from November to March, and for short periods over Christmas and in January.

The food here is simply the best we have ever tasted. It's the highlight of the hotel! I had the chicken with mushroom, which was absolutely amazing, and a definite must-order side dish is the harissa carrots—they were phenomenal. My husband is still talking about his burger, which he declares the best he’s ever had. They also offer a lovely range of cocktails and whisky, perfect for unwinding aft...

Selkie Tours

We had a 5-day Selkie tour with American clients recently and while they chose Pitlochry as a base, I planned to stay nearby in Aberfeldy. I checked availability of accommodation & rates for the highly awarded Grandtully Hotel on a well known OTA (I'd previously enjoyed a 'pop-up' lunch hosted by Ballintaggart in Ullapool) so I wanted to stay and dine there. Sadly, I didn't get the email reply f...

We stayed for one night at the hotel and wished we’d stayed longer. The room was large with comfy king bed, the decor stylish and cool. The roll top bath was a hit after a long days hiking. The welcome negroni was fantastic. Breakfast was fabulous and with good quality locally sourced products and the host was really friendly. We’d love to return!

We really enjoyed our Friday night stay at this small hotel in rural Perthshire. We had previously stopped for lunch and returned recently to extend our experience. Our room enjoyed a comfortable double bed, double marble sink and a large roll top bath and a separate rain shower (Laura Thomas soaps were a luxurious addition). The weather was too cold to enjoy the small private terrace but in summ...

Nice small town bed and breakfast hotel. Room was small with little design flair, but comfortable. The stated view of the River Tay was not much of a view actually. Reception was friendly and efficient. The welcome negroni was fantastic. Dinner was locally sourced and fine dining. The price was high, but matched the quality of the food and presentation. Breakfast was fantastic with, again, lo...
