Expert Review: The Central Station Memphis

The Central Station Memphis, a Curio Collection by Hilton, stands as a unique and meticulously renovated luxury hotel within the historic 1914 Memphis Central Station building. Recognized as a Michelin Key Selected property, it seamlessly blends its rich railroad heritage with a vibrant, music-centric atmosphere, making it a compelling choice for travelers seeking an authentic Memphis experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Central Station Memphis is highly positive, with guests frequently praising its distinctive character and prime location. Review scores consistently rate it as "Wonderful" or "Very Good" across various platforms, often exceeding 8 out of 10. The hotel is described as a "super cool, great decor and very stylish" and an "amazing transformation from train station to hotel".

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly drawn to the hotel's unique concept and atmosphere, which pays homage to Memphis's profound musical heritage and its past as a bustling train station.

  • Design & Atmosphere: The hotel's design striking blend of modern luxury and historical elements from its Amtrak station past. Original architectural details, such as the Roman Revival facade, are preserved and complemented by contemporary, locally-inspired décor, eclectic art, and industrial furnishings. A standout feature is the hotel's "Very Serious Music Program," including a listening lounge with a collection of over 20,000 vinyl records connected to Memphis, in-room custom-designed EgglestonWorks speakers playing daily curated playlists, and live DJs.
  • Location: Its location in the revitalized South Main Arts District is highly celebrated. It provides easy walking access to major downtown attractions, including Beale Street, the National Civil Rights Museum, and numerous restaurants, shops, and music venues. It's also incredibly convenient for Amtrak travelers, as it's part of an active train station.
  • Amenities: Popular amenities include a fitness center, free WiFi, a restaurant and bar, and pet-friendly rooms. The Grand Hall, originally the station's waiting room, has been transformed into an elegant ballroom with 33-foot ceilings, suitable for events.

3. Room Quality

The hotel offers 123 meticulously designed king or double queen guest rooms and suites. Rooms are described as clean, comfortable, and modern.

  • Comfort & Design: Guests appreciate the plush bedding, custom artwork featuring local artists, and lavish amenities. Rooms maintain the early 20th-century charm with oversized windows offering views of the historic South Main neighborhood or the Mississippi River.
  • Unique Features: A defining feature in every guest room is the custom-designed EgglestonWorks speakers, allowing guests to enjoy the hotel's daily curated, Memphis-inspired playlists. Modern amenities include a 49" or 50" HDTV, functional workspace, USB outlets, premium cable channels, Keurig coffeemaker, and William Roam Steam Collection toiletries.
  • Room Size: While many find the rooms "good sized and well designed" or "spacious", some guests have noted that certain rooms, particularly the "Compact Main Cabin" options (225 sq ft), can be "so so tiny" or a "little snug," which has led to disappointment for some at the price point.

4. Dining Experience

The Central Station Memphis offers distinct dining and drink options.

  • Eight & Sand: This is the hotel's lobby bar and lounge, often highlighted as a "fantastic bar and restaurant" and a "cool bar". It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, featuring contemporary American cuisine with a seasonal cocktail list, a Memphis-connected wine list, and local beers. It's also the heart of the hotel's music program, with live DJs spinning from its extensive vinyl collection.
  • Bishop: The hotel previously housed Bishop, a French brasserie-inspired restaurant with Southern influences. Guest feedback indicated Bishop served "outstanding" and "beautiful" dinner and cocktails. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options were available upon request.
  • Breakfast: An American breakfast is available, with some guests praising it as "very nice, with excellent service".

5. Service & Staff

Feedback on service and staff is generally very positive. Guests frequently describe the staff as "extremely friendly and helpful," "professional, nice and prompt," and "amazing". The check-in staff, security, and cleaning team often receive specific commendation. Some individual staff members have been noted for excellent service, such as Derika at breakfast.

However, there have been isolated instances of dissatisfaction. Some guests reported poor communication prior to arrival, with messages going unanswered, or issues with basic problem-solving and professionalism at the front desk related to booking discrepancies. The bar has also been described as "understaffed" at times, leading to long waits for service.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Central Station Memphis boasts a "superb" and "perfect" location in the South Main Arts District, a historically rich and revitalized neighborhood.

  • Proximity to Attractions: It's within walking distance to numerous attractions like Beale Street, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, the Orpheum Theater, and the Arcade Restaurant (Memphis's oldest eatery).
  • Transportation: As an active train station, it offers direct access to Amtrak's City of New Orleans route and is served by the MATA Trolley system. It is conveniently located minutes from I-55, I-40, and 240, and Memphis International Airport is approximately 10-12 miles away.
  • Parking: The hotel offers self-parking for $24 (daily) and valet parking for $29 (daily). Some reviews mention that parking can be "tricky when there is an event" but suggest paying extra for a garage spot.
  • Neighborhood Safety: While the immediate area is lively and well-regarded, some guests have advised caution when venturing "further south than the hotel, especially if on foot," mentioning a "sketchy area" nearby and the presence of security in the parking lot. However, generally, it is considered safe for walking to nearby attractions.

7. Value & Pricing

The Central Station Memphis is an upscale 4-star property. Room prices can vary, but an average room price is around $255, which is higher than the average in Memphis (around $172). Prices can be found starting from approximately $128 to $152 for standard rooms, with deals often available in December and November. Some guests feel the hotel offers "exceptional value" given its luxurious amenities and service. However, other guests have stated that they wouldn't pay over $150 or $250 for a room, especially if it was small, suggesting value can be subjective and tied to room size and personal expectations.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • Room Size: Some "Compact Main Cabin" rooms are perceived as being "tiny" or "snug," which can be a disappointment, especially given the price.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Although staff are generally highly praised, some guests have reported issues with communication prior to arrival, unanswered messages, or instances of poor service during check-in/check-out for specific situations. The bar has also been cited as occasionally understaffed.
  • Bathroom Privacy: One guest mentioned disliking the "roller door" style bathroom door, feeling it lacked privacy.
  • Noise: While train noise is generally minimal and not an issue for most, one guest did report a loud humming from the central air system in their room.

The hotel staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the food was absolutely delicious. I particularly enjoyed the quesadilla, and I would definitely recommend trying it. While the rooms were clean, they did feel somewhat dated compared to what I was expecting. The bar, however, had a very modern and trendy atmosphere.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Central Station Hotel. The location is absolutely charming, right across the street from the iconic Arcade Restaurant, which has been around since 1919 and was even a favorite of Elvis. Such a fun piece of Memphis history to have steps away. There are also a few cute little shops nearby that make the area feel lively and walkable. The hotel itself is beautiful and ...

Proper old school converted station to of course a hotel. This is not a 5 star hotel for facilities but it is for character and smile appeal. We did got to Beale street for some live music which is easy walking distance. Equally the bar has a DJ who plays cool’s Memphis sounds. We are on a round the world trip so the laundry facilities was a bonus. €4 and jobs a good in. Oh great craft beer and re...

This hotel absolutely refuses to recognize statues, if they did I would have at least got a better view (extremely disappointed with this view). I booked this Hilton property months before arrival through the American Express FHC program because I was a Gold member with Hilton and they gave me the worst possible room on the property. Breakfast the next morning (2/15/26) was over a hour late showin...

Very nice hotel. I feel like the room could have been cleaner. The shower had smudges on the doors and grim on the floor. Loved that there was a club inside the hotel and we were not bothered by the music. The location is spectacular. Not far from several restaurants and the trolley is right out the front doors. Staff were nice and accommodating. Christmas decor was beautiful. The train is literal...

This is my first time staying here and the rooms are very nice. I had a suite with sitting area. Its spacious. The help desk folks were very helpful and nice. There are a few things to mention. The rooms are cold and a pass code is needed which engineer has to unlock for you to adjust. Which they did. Parking is $28.00 a night, too high.
