Expert Review: The Astro Motel

The Astro Motel, nestled in Santa Rosa within the expansive Napa/Sonoma Valleys, offers a unique and highly-rated experience as a Michelin Guide selected property. Originally a 1963 motor lodge, it underwent an ambitious $10 million renovation, reopening in 2018 as a stylish, urban boutique motel blending mid-century modern aesthetics with contemporary comforts and a focus on sustainability.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Astro Motel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its charming design, comfortable atmosphere, and excellent service. Review scores are consistently high, with ratings like 9.5 on Hotels.com for what guests liked, and exceptional scores for cleanliness (9.7), service (9.7), comfort (10.0), and value for money (10.0) on various platforms. It's celebrated for offering a "very special stay" within the MICHELIN Guide's selection, distinguishing itself as a high-quality option in California's wine country.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of The Astro. Its design stands out, showcasing a spectacular blend of "kitschy 60s and modern glam" with original mid-century modern furnishings and curated artworks. The lush edible garden courtyard is frequently mentioned as a peaceful and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space, featuring fruit trees guests can enjoy. The motel's bike-friendly amenities are a significant draw, offering Shinola bikes for rent, an on-site repair station, and secure storage, making it an ideal hub for exploring Santa Rosa's trails. The complimentary continental breakfast is another beloved highlight, praised for being delicious, fresh, and well-stocked with options like granola, yogurt, fruit, and great coffee.

Room Quality

The 34 rooms at The Astro are described as spacious, very clean, and thoughtfully designed, ensuring a restful stay. Each room is unique, with local creatives contributing personalized amenities. They feature wooden headboards, large, comfortable memory foam beds with premium bedding and down comforters, quirky light fixtures, and period furniture, all acquired at local auctions. Amenities include air conditioning, flat-screen TVs with premium channels, free in-room WiFi, minibars stocked with local makers' products, and refrigerators. Some rooms also offer balconies or patios, and king suites include kitchenettes, which are a welcome addition. Guests have the option to purchase items from their rooms if they fall in love with a particular piece.

Dining Experience

While The Astro Motel itself offers a highly praised free continental breakfast each morning, guests rave about its delicious, fresh, and well-stocked options. For other meals, the motel does not have its own full-service, on-site restaurant, but its owners also operate the renowned local dining institution, The Spinster Sisters, which is conveniently located just one street away (0.3 miles). Guests often receive a voucher for use at Spinster Sisters. The surrounding area in Santa Rosa City Center also boasts a variety of dining options, from cozy cafes to upscale farm-to-table restaurants.

Service & Staff

The staff at The Astro Motel consistently receives high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and professionalism. Guests describe them as enthusiastic and welcoming, offering helpful suggestions for exploring the town and ensuring a comfortable experience. The service contributes significantly to the overall positive guest sentiment.

Location & Accessibility

The Astro Motel is strategically located in Santa Rosa's vibrant SOFA (South A Street Arts District), described as Sonoma County's "next big destination neighborhood". It's situated on Juilliard Park, across the street from Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, and within walking distance of downtown Santa Rosa's main square, various restaurants, breweries (like Russian River Brewing Company), bakeries, and cultural attractions like the Museums of Sonoma County. The location is also ideal for exploring the wider Sonoma County wine region and offers easy drives to Napa and St. Helena. Public transport is convenient, with Santa Rosa North Station and Santa Rosa Downtown Station providing access to local bus routes and connections to the Bay Area. For those traveling by car, there is free self-parking available, although some guests have noted limited property parking. Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport is approximately a 22-minute drive away.

Value & Pricing

The Astro Motel is generally considered to offer excellent value, especially given its high-quality renovation and boutique experience in the often pricey Wine Country. While specific pricing varies, rooms have been booked on KAYAK in the range of $148 to $158 recently, with standard and deluxe rooms starting around $139 nightly and queen rooms around $151 nightly. It's seen as an "affordable but still cool place to stay" compared to other options in the area. The inclusion of free continental breakfast, free WiFi, and free parking adds to its overall value.

Common Complaints

While feedback is largely positive, some minor recurring issues have been mentioned. One guest noted a "random clicking noise from the Utility Room next door". Limited property parking has also been a minor criticism from some guests. Additionally, one review mentioned that the "tiny working desk" in some rooms might be uncomfortable for taller individuals. There is no on-site pool or fitness center.

We loved our stay at Astro Motel! A gem of a place convenient to wine country with a super friendly staff, beautiful garden and tasty breakfast. Great bed, great shower, lots to discover in the room and the lounge. If she is there, find Betty. Betty’s warm hospitality made our stay memorable.

The most odd check in experience of my life. The location is super cute, the rooms are adorable and well decorated. I found the mattress and bed situation quite comfy. The AC was indeed loud, but nothing that can’t be fixed by pressing some buttons.

We were visiting a couple amazing vineyards near by and decided to spend a night here. I appreciated the dog friendly which is what initially caught my eye. The photos and reviews looked nice so we booked a one night stay. The staff were informative and checking in was easy. However there were a few issues that I feel made our stay really difficult. 1) The AC is so loud its impossible to sleep 2...

The pet-friendly king suite served as our temporary home/office for 8 days in July. Because housekeeping only enters upon request, it was easy to keep our senior cat calm and safe during our stay. We also appreciated the room's comfortable bed, well-stocked kitchenette, large desk, fast and reliable wifi, free and easy parking, and windows with shutters and screens. We walked to several great rest...

This is a consciously Funky place delivered via Time Warp The 1963 bones are apparent, but the courtyard fruit trees, picnic tables and random Polynesian-style concrete sculptures are oddly comfortable and funny. Rooms are updated, with comfy beds and one can easily walk to any downtown pub, restaurant or cafe. Across the street is the Luther Burbank site, if boredom strikes. If you appreciat...
