Expert Review: The Apsara Rive Droite
The Apsara Rive Droite in Luang Prabang, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receives high praise for its serene riverside location, exceptional service, and elegant design, offering guests a tranquil yet accessible retreat in the charming city of Luang Prabang.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The Apsara Rive Droite garners overwhelmingly positive feedback, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful," "perfect," and "exceptional." It holds a "Wonderful" rating of 9.0 out of 10 on Booking.com from numerous reviews, with staff scoring a perfect 10.0, and cleanliness rated at 9.6. Agoda also lists an impressive overall rating of 9.1, highlighting "Exceptional" room comfort and quality. The general sentiment points to a charming and memorable experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight several standout features:
- Service & Staff: The attentive and friendly staff, particularly the manager, Mr. Han (Peehann), are frequently lauded for going "above and beyond" to ensure a pleasant stay, assisting with everything from booking train tickets to arranging boat trips.
- Location: Its unique position across the Nam Khan River from the main town provides a sense of "luxurious isolation" and quiet, while still being easily accessible via a complimentary 1-minute boat shuttle. The beautiful river views and lush gardens contribute to a peaceful ambiance.
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel's "subtle and refined" modern design, combined with traditional dark wood furnishings and a contemporary homage to the colonial era, creates an elegant and intimate atmosphere. The property features a lovely outdoor swimming pool, which is a significant draw, particularly as heritage laws often prohibit pools on the main peninsula.
- Amenities: Key amenities include free Wi-Fi, an outdoor pool, complimentary bicycles for exploring, and a free airport shuttle service.
3. Room Quality
The Apsara Rive Droite boasts "spacious, clean and comfortable" rooms, often described as "airy" and "glamorous." The 9 boutique rooms are tastefully decorated with dark wood furnishings and benefit from ample natural sunlight. Guests can enjoy views of the garden, river, temples, and mountains from their private balconies or terraces, many of which also feature outdoor daybeds. Each room is well-appointed with amenities such as an iPod dock, air conditioning, fans, a mini-bar, safe, hairdryer, and a private bathroom with a separate shower and bathtub. Deluxe rooms are generously sized at 50 square meters (538 sq ft).
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's restaurant and bar serve as a "social nexus," offering a "fine selection of Asian and Western dishes" with an authentic Lao flair. Breakfast, included in the room rate, often features a "French twist" with delicious toasted baguettes, flaky croissants, and a seasonal fruit plate. The restaurant is noted for its "Creative Plant-Based Lao Food," inspired by historical recipes and presented with modern culinary techniques, with the chef, Bee Satongun, having received a Michelin Star for her work at Paste Bangkok. In-room dining options are also available for guests.
5. Service & Staff
Service at The Apsara Rive Droite is consistently rated as exceptional. Booking.com shows a perfect 10.0 for staff performance. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "polite, friendly, and always happy to help." The manager, Mr. Han (or Peehann), is particularly highlighted for his "warm and helpful" nature and for consistently going "above and beyond" to ensure guests have a pleasant stay, from arranging transportation to organizing excursions. The team is described as "well-trained, knowledgeable, and eager to please," providing comprehensive concierge services.
6. Location & Accessibility
The Apsara Rive Droite is situated on the right bank of the Nam Khan River, offering a peaceful setting just "across the UNESCO protected peninsula of old Town Luang Prabang." While feeling "secluded and intimate," it remains highly accessible. A complimentary boat shuttle ferries guests across the river to the main town in about a minute, placing them within a 15-minute walk of the lively Night Market and a 10-minute walk from Wat Xieng Thong Temple. The hotel also provides free bicycles, allowing guests to explore the surrounding area and nearby villages. Luang Prabang Airport is a convenient 5-minute drive away, with free airport shuttle services provided.
7. Value & Pricing
While some guests note that prices might appear "a little high for Laos," the general consensus is that the experience at The Apsara Rive Droite is "worth the money." The hotel's "Value for money" rating on Booking.com is 8.2, and on Agoda, it is 8.9. The room rate typically includes breakfast. The Michelin Guide assures "best prices guaranteed" when booking directly.
8. Common Complaints
While largely positive, some minor criticisms have been noted:
- Accessibility to Town: Being across the river might be seen as inconvenient for those who prefer not to use the boat shuttle, and alternative road access can take around 15 minutes.
- Physical Access: The "steep, uneven steps up to the hotel" from the river can be challenging for guests with mobility issues or those who are less fit.
- Noise: Occasionally, "noise from the road and village behind the hotel is sometimes audible in the rooms."
- Limited Late-Night Options: The restaurant and bar close at 10 pm, meaning guests seeking a late drink would need to venture into town, which has an 11:30 pm curfew.
- Availability: With only nine rooms, the hotel can be "often full," requiring early booking.
- Neighborhood Atmosphere: Some reviews mention a "little atmosphere in this neighborhood" directly surrounding the hotel, though its seclusion is also a highlight for many.

Had an excellent stay at the Apsara Rive Droite hotel this week. The staff, Mr. Han to be specific, was amazing. From arranging a transfer to and from the airport to avoid the taxi situation to caring about everything during our stay. He kept breakfast for us on the first morning knowing that we had a 48 hour trip from the east coast and would be waking up late. He should be teaching hospitality l...

I loved our stay at this beautiful hotel. Staff were lovely, food was great and it was only a hop, skip and a jump away from the centre of town. Highly recommend

Really great service! Took good care of us by booking taxis, giving us tips, and most importantly, organising the shipping of a bag we had forgotten in another city. The hotel manager and staff are very kind, polite, and professional. The hotel is in a very good state, nice swimming pool, spacious and clean rooms. Especially like the breakfast in the garden. Location-wise, not right in the city ...

This is a small boutique hotel with a very professional, experienced, and thoughtful manager. The room is spacious with a huge balcony facing the river. The breakfast is served according to our requests and the local coffee is very special. The only setback is the toiletries.
