Expert Review: The Abner Hotel

The Abner Hotel, Litchfield: A Michelin Key Selected Blend of History and Modern Luxury

The Abner Hotel, nestled in the picturesque town of Litchfield, Connecticut, has quickly established itself as a premier boutique destination, earning a Michelin Key selection for its exceptional offerings. Transformed from the historic Litchfield County Courthouse, the hotel seamlessly marries its rich past with contemporary design and amenities, offering guests a unique and memorable experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Abner Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "excellent in all aspects" and a "luxurious retreat." It's praised for its unique charm and sophisticated atmosphere, making it an ideal East Coast escape. The careful preservation of its historical legacy combined with modern flair resonates strongly with visitors.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Abner for its distinctive design, prime location, and thoughtful amenities.

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's transformation from a courthouse is a major highlight, with original elements like the jury box thoughtfully integrated into the restaurant's design and vaulted doors dating back to the 1880s in some suites. The interiors feature a bold, contemporary spirit with saffron palettes, curated art collections, and warm lighting, creating an "assuredly cool tone" in the quaint Litchfield streets.
  • Location: Situated "just off the Green" in the heart of Litchfield, the hotel offers easy access to the town's charming shops and local attractions.
  • Amenities: Free WiFi, pet-friendly accommodations, and a minibar stocked with locally sourced treats are appreciated by guests. The seasonal rooftop bar, Verdict, offering panoramic views, is a particular draw during warmer months.

3. Room Quality

The Abner Hotel boasts 20 stylish guest rooms, including five suites, each uniquely designed while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.

  • Comfort & Design: Rooms are characterized by "mustard-yellow walls, dark wood accents, cozy plaid blankets," and petite seating nooks. The Chamber Suites, located by the courthouse's original entrance, feature ochre-hued interiors, restored fireplaces, and sunlight-welcoming sash windows, with check-tiled bathrooms and vaulted doors from the 1880s. Despite some rooms being "odd-shaped" at 225 square feet with 16-foot ceilings, clever design ensures they feel comfortable.
  • Amenities: Standard in-room amenities include Tivoli Bluetooth radios, free bottled water, bathrobes by Tensira, and sustainably made bath products from Further and Palermo. Notably, some reviews mention the absence of TVs in rooms.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel offers three distinctive dining and cocktail experiences.

  • The Courtroom: This signature restaurant, located in the historic main courtroom, offers a refined take on "modern tavern food with continental influences" using locally sourced ingredients. Guests have praised the "creativity and finesse" of the dishes, from fresh seafood to perfectly cooked steak, and describe the service as "impeccable."
  • Breakfast: A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily in The Courtroom, which also includes "a couple of warm options."
  • The Parlor: A warm and inviting lounge with rich red hues and a curated art collection, The Parlor is ideal for expertly crafted cocktails and delicious bites by the fireplace.
  • Verdict (Rooftop Bar): The seasonal rooftop bar, Verdict, offers expertly crafted cocktails and local brews with panoramic views of the Litchfield countryside. It's described as a "crowning rooftop bar that makes summer evenings a coveted occasion."

5. Service & Staff

Guest feedback highlights the "friendly and helpful staff" and "warm personal service" at The Abner Hotel. The management and overall quality of service are noted as what one would expect from a high-class boutique hotel.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Abner Hotel enjoys a prime location "down Litchfield's central West Street," placing it at the heart of Litchfield, Connecticut.

  • Neighborhood & Attractions: Guests can easily explore the town's colonial-era homes, tree-lined streets, and local attractions like the Litchfield Historical Society Museum. Local restaurants such as West Street Grill and The Village Restaurant are also nearby.
  • Transport: While Litchfield itself doesn't have train stations, Amtrak runs through Hartford Union Station, which is about an hour's drive away. Bradley International Airport is approximately a 50-minute drive, with private transfers available. Guests are advised that a car isn't necessary for staying around Litchfield itself. The hotel is accessible for guests with limited mobility, with elevators servicing all three floors, including the bars and restaurant.

7. Value & Pricing

The Abner Hotel is considered a luxurious boutique property. While specific pricing can vary, a 1-night stay for two adults was noted to start from approximately CA $289.72 (excluding taxes and fees) as of February 11, 2026, for a stay on February 22, 2026. Guests generally find the experience to be worth the cost, given the high quality of the hotel, its offerings, and the exceptional service.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are largely positive, a few minor issues have been noted:

  • Rooftop Bar Closure: One guest reported disappointment when the seasonal rooftop bar was closed for a private event without prior notification, especially for a high-priced stay.
  • Breakfast Options: While a complimentary continental breakfast is provided, one guest expressed a desire for "more and more luxurious options."
  • No TVs in Rooms: Some rooms do not include televisions, which might be a consideration for some guests.

Great location. Shopping and multiple restaurants/bars within a short stroll. The hotel itself was great. The staff were great. While I didn't eat in The Courtroom, I did have cocktails and those were great. Free parking also. The room was clean. The pillows were amazing. I need to call and find out what they were because it was legit the best pillow of my life. You can use Hyatt points or book...

We’ve stayed at the Abner three times now, and it has consistently been a wonderful experience. The rooms are spacious and the beds are so comfortable. The staff is welcoming, responsive and kind - you can send a text if you need anything and they respond in less than 5 minutes. The Court Room restaurant is great (the lava cake dessert is so good), and the breakfast is my favorite part. Stephan...

Stayed at the Abner while in town to celebrate a friend’s 60th bday. From the kindness and hospitality over the phone to checking in to having drinks…the staff was some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met, the hotel was on point from ambience to an interior design and the room was more than adequate! Would definitely stay here again.

The Abner is a lovely, beautiful and fun getaway perfectly located in Litchfield CT. Our three generation family had a great time on a cozy winter weekend. We had an excellent dinner at The Courtroom and the included breakfast buffet was delicious. The hotel staff couldn’t have been more accommodating, professional and thoughtful. We’ll definitely come back.

Staying at the Abner is a sheer delight, especially the Abner team. They learn your name and greet you by your name at every touch point. They remember your coffee preference at breakfast. The rooms are comfortable and welcoming. There are no TV’s in the rooms which encourage you to enjoy socializing in both the hotel and the wider Litchfield . In the summer there is a roof top bar. Looking forwa...
