Stein Eriksen Lodge: A Comprehensive Review of Park City's Michelin One-Key Mountain Retreat

Stein Eriksen Lodge, nestled mid-mountain at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, stands as a beacon of luxury, blending Norwegian charm with the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. Recognized with a prestigious One Michelin Key, this property consistently earns accolades, including Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa ratings, and has been named "World's Best Ski Hotel" multiple times. Guests frequently praise its exceptional service, prime ski-in/ski-out access, and distinctive European design.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Stein Eriksen Lodge is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "Pure Excellence" and "the Ultimate 5-star Resort in Park City." It consistently receives high ratings across various platforms, with an average staff score of 9.3, location score of 9.7, and cleanliness score of 9.8. The sentiment highlights a truly luxurious and pampered experience, making guests feel "completely at home."

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the lodge for several standout features:

  • Service & Hospitality: The staff's commitment to "warm, gracious hospitality and personalized service" is a recurring theme, with many noting that the service is "beyond anything we had ever experienced." The ski valet service, in particular, is frequently highlighted as exceptional.
  • Location: Its ski-in/ski-out access directly to Deer Valley Resort is a major draw, providing unparalleled convenience for skiers. The mid-mountain setting offers spectacular views.
  • Design & Atmosphere: The lodge eschews typical "Mountain West clichés," opting instead for a subdued yet robust European design with Scandinavian colors, massive stone fireplaces, and rich wooden furnishings, creating a distinct personality.
  • Amenities: Stein Eriksen Lodge boasts a Forbes Five-Star spa, two heated outdoor pools and hot tubs (open year-round), a fitness center, a wine cellar, and a 3,500-square-foot game room. Complimentary shuttle service to Park City's Main Street is also a valued amenity.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at Stein Eriksen Lodge are described as anything but "stripped-down," offering ample space and lavish comforts. Rooms are generally decorated in a modern Scandinavian style with beige and light brown tones, crisp white linens, and dark wood furniture. Features commonly mentioned by guests include:

  • Deeply enveloping king and queen beds.
  • Plenty of closet space for winter gear.
  • Whirlpool baths or outdoor hot tubs in many rooms and suites.
  • Wood-burning fireplaces.
  • Luxury suites often include full kitchens, separate living and dining areas, and multiple bathrooms, feeling more like a home than a hotel room.
  • Some guests have mentioned needing to run the air conditioning at its lowest setting to keep the room cool.

4. Dining Experience

The lodge features two main restaurants: the upscale Glitretind and the more casual Troll Hallen.

  • Glitretind Restaurant: This award-winning Forbes Four-Star restaurant is open year-round for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and its famous Sunday Brunch. The brunch is particularly renowned for its extensive buffet, including fresh seafood, various hot dishes, and an impressive dessert spread. While generally highly praised for its culinary excellence and attentive staff, some recent reviews have indicated a decline in food quality for certain entrees.
  • Troll Hallen: Offers a more relaxed setting, perfect for après-ski or a light lunch.
  • The lodge is also known for its pastry chef Raymond Lammers's hand-made chocolates.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Stein Eriksen Lodge is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently use terms like "amazing," "first rate," and "flawless" to describe the staff and their hospitality. Specific examples of excellent service include:

  • Friendly and helpful staff from check-in to departure, including bellmen offering umbrellas and bottled water for the road.
  • Exceptional ski valet service, handling equipment, providing boot warmers, and assisting guests on and off the slopes.
  • Twice-daily housekeeping and turndown service.
  • Concierge services are readily available for reservations and transportation arrangements.

6. Location & Accessibility

Stein Eriksen Lodge boasts an enviable mid-mountain location at Deer Valley Resort, offering convenient ski-in/ski-out access.

  • Ski Access: Multiple ski lifts and the neighboring Silver Lake Lodge are just steps away. Deer Valley is known as an excellent learner's mountain with groomed trails, and snowboarding is prohibited.
  • Transportation: The lodge provides a complimentary luxury SUV shuttle service throughout Park City, making it easy to reach Historic Main Street (about a five-minute ride) and the Deer Valley Ski School (a ten-minute ride) without needing a car. Salt Lake City International Airport is approximately a 45-minute drive, and various transportation options can be arranged through the concierge.
  • Nearby Attractions: Beyond skiing, guests can explore Park City's boutiques, galleries, and dining options on Main Street.

7. Value & Pricing

As a luxury, Michelin One-Key property with Forbes Five-Star ratings, Stein Eriksen Lodge commands a premium price. Room rates can start from around $250 per night, but the average price for a room is closer to $557, and can go much higher, with some deals starting from $403/night. While the "Value for money" score on Booking.com is 8.0, guests generally feel the extraordinary experience justifies the higher cost, emphasizing the "unrivaled experience" and "impeccable service" as factors that make it "worth every penny."

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms and issues have been noted:

  • Off-Season Experience: During transition periods between low and high seasons, some guests have experienced closed restaurants and gift shops, and even paint fumes in open dining areas due to ongoing maintenance.
  • Air Conditioning: A few guests have reported needing to run the air conditioning at its lowest setting to keep rooms cool, suggesting potential issues with temperature regulation.
  • Dining Consistency: While generally lauded, some recent reviews for Glitretind have mentioned a dip in the quality of certain main course dishes.
  • Staff Consistency (Isolated Incidents): Though the staff is generally praised, isolated incidents of rudeness from shop staff or valets bringing the wrong vehicle have been reported.

This is a particularly strong destination for families. Staff were consistently patient and attentive, especially with kids, without being intrusive. For a child having multiple firsts on the mountain, that kind of environment matters. The attention to quality carries through beyond the skiing as well. Food and beverage offerings reflect a level of care you don’t often see on-mountain, with thoug...

Absolutely a piece of heaven. Every day I spent there was wonderful, and every person working there seemed to be genuinely caring about you and your experience. I highly recommend the spa too, Amanda was very insightful and helped with my neck/shoulder pain, I felt like a new person and wish I had done a 2hrs session. Truly one of a kind people, place and experience. 5 stars is simply not enough....

We have stayed at this hotel several times. The service is excellent. Our suite was beautiful with a Wolf stove and Sub Zero fridge. We had glass walls with a view of skiers on the slopes. We had two decks. We stayed in our beautiful suite a lot because the weather was terrible (meaning no snow in February, but nobody can control this…) We did ski and loved leaving our stuff in a locker near the ...

This is boomer luxury. Molton Brown soaps not flamingo estate if you know what I mean… plastic purified water (glorified Dasani) in the rooms not glass spring water… Sauna is available only to spa customers. They say you can buy a day pass for $100 to use the sauna if there’s room in the locker room but it was full my entire stay. I also couldn’t get a massage either. The shuttle is one sprinter v...
